Custom-finished room in a semi-secluded area of the house. The basement has a separate outside entrance and walkway so guests can come and go with privacy.

The space
The room is a large, multi-angled space, in the basement with 3 windows that open to the side yard. Lots of angles, level changes and custom work give the room a unique feel. There is a writing desk with a swing-arm desk lamp, chair, plenty of outlets and excellent high-speed wireless access. 32" flat screen smart TV with cable. The room includes a built in closet with shelves and hanging space. There is a comfy queen-size bed with nightstand, and a full length mirror.

The ceilings in the room are regular height, but the ceiling height in the rest of the basement is low, so if you're over 6ft tall, you may feel uncomfortable. The basement (except for the entrance) is newly finished and has new granite counter-top kitchen. Across the hall from the room, is a new walk-in, tiled shower and bathroom (also low ceiling) that is shared with one other room.

This room, one of two basement bedrooms, has a separate entrance and only shares the laundry with other guests.

The door to the basement is in the back of the house and can be accessed directly by walking through the gate, around the right side of the house along gravel paths. Many guests enjoy the extra privacy this affords.

Where you’ll be

Portland, Oregon, United States

The house is located in the heart of the vibrant Alberta district. Starting 3 blocks away, there are great restaurants (including Podnah's Pit, restaurant of the year), coffee houses (like Random Order named one of America's Best Pie Spots by Food&Wine), brew pubs, shopping and entertainment. Walkscore rating for our house is an amazing 96! It describes our location as a Walker's Paradise.

I love living in Portland. I get to ride my bike around town most days or work on house or yard projects. I usually do a range of sports during the week depending on the time of year--including basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, running and cycling. However, my biggest sports passions are kitesurfing, rock climbing, and slacklining. I've been climbing for over 20 years and have put up many new climbing routes around Portland over the years. Depending on the time of year, I will have a slackline set up in the backyard. If you've never tried it, it's unlike any other balance sport...basically a single line trampoline that feels impossible at first, but is actually quite manageable after a bit of practice. I like gardening and have spent the last 10 years or so transplanting and cultivating trees, shrubs and sedums at the house. There are all sorts of perennial edibles here--cherry, plum, persimmon, fig, blueberry, huckleberry, strawberry, pear, grape, asparagus, kiwi and raspberry. Feel free to sample anything that's in season! I lived in Bolivia for a couple of years while I was in the Peace Corps and have traveled to about 50 countries since then. I like being an adventure traveler and enjoy hosting other travelers and visitors as well. I bought this house back in 2006 and it was practically unlivable. Then once I decided to replace all the plumbing, it was unlivable for about 3 months. doh! But that was years ago. These days, I continue to work on smallish projects around the house, whether it's transplanting my bamboo, adding a new gravel path, refinishing the 100yr old fir floors, planning a new garden bed, or building a covered bike storage area out of recycled materials.

During your stay

You are likely to meet other long-term guests staying in the house. We have occasional group meals (organized by guests) where you'll get a chance to share food and drink with other travelers. I usually attend these meals when I'm in town. This room shares common areas with one other room in the basement. I live in one of upstairs the rooms, though I am occasionally away traveling or on rock climbing trips. There are usually good opportunities to interact with other guests in the common areas of the house, but it also easy to find privacy. I've had some wonderful people stay here over the years and look forward to meeting many more!
