Enhanced Clean
This Host committed to Airbnb's 5-step enhanced cleaning process.
This is a private country house for family and/or friends. Hike and swim nearby, play tennis and shop in town. Explore the nearby Penobscot Bay coast's many interesting sites, and islands - or stay quiet in this getaway so as to write, paint, meditate. The area was settled in the late 18th century, and there is early history to enjoy. Some bookings flexible (3-day minimum) - do ask. Book two or more weeks with a discount. Some folks return summer after summer.

The space
Our historic cape on a quiet country road is available only in warm weather, generally by the week. (The settings here resist my indicating it, but we occasionally invite people for just a few nights.) It's a lovely private country place for individuals, friends, lovers and families to relax, hike, bike, sleep and read. It has an eat-in country kitchen, sitting ("middle") room, living room, mud-room/pantry and a cozy double bedroom on the ground floor. There is a light and spacious double bedroom on the 2nd floor, and a single room too. There is one small bath with shower, on 2nd floor. Beds for 5 people. Linens and towels are supplied. Please bring your own beach towels.
We are artists, and have had this house and another next door (where we summer) since early 1970s.

Where you’ll be

Montville, Maine, United States

Located at the edge of the quiet hamlet of South Montville, fields, a large pond and woods are all within easy walking distance. It takes about 20 minutes to drive to Belfast. Searsmont and Liberty are within 10 minutes.
A neighbor has fresh free range eggs and there are several young organic farmers very close by with wonderful produce to buy. There are 2 farmers markets in Belfast and other garden stands along the roads. Lake St George is nearby, a beautiful spring fed lake that's the head of the St George's River. A great park there is perfect for families with young swimmers to picnic and play all afternoon. It has a boat launch too. Stevens Pond is closer, smaller and also very nice for swims and small boats. Adjoining our land is Trues Pond - the dam there was repaired last summer, making swimming and using small boats there very easy. We're 15 miles from Belfast on the Penobscot Bay. Within 45 minutes are Rockland, Rockport, Camden, Searsport. Those lovely harbors offer tidewater swimming and boating, shopping, dining, sightseeing, theaters, cafes, movies and art centers. Plenty to do and see. The Belfast city park faces the bay, and among the trees and lawns are tennis courts and swimming pool.
When you return home it's quiet and cool.

We are both free-lance artists, who met as students long ago. We share many interests including human rights, history, gardening, birds, and of course the arts...films, opera, blues, modern dance, good painting and photography. Emily has taught for many years; Will loves building and has restored several houses with Emily's help. He's also restoring old cars. (His Model T is running now.) Our family includes a daughter and her husband and their two young sons, as well as our own siblings and their families. We've stayed as guests in airbnb places in Europe, which have been terrific. We enjoy hosting too.

During your stay

Normally we greet guests, show them around, and answer questions on first meeting. Soon after their arrival we invite them for a glass of wine in our house if they'd like. It is expected that both households are independent and that privacy is respected. We are friendly and glad to chat from time to time as neighbors - and certainly to address any questions or needs. If a guest arranges to be using the writer's shed they will be walking through our large back yard to get there. This seems to work fine with everyone.
