The Space

A private efficiency unit in the log home of a local wildlife artist. A great get-away for peace and quiet, whether you are a writer/artist or individual/couple who just needs that special time and peaceful space away from the hustle bustle of everyday life. My home is just four miles east of the vibrant center of Amherst, this simple but comfortable 3-room unit has its own private entrance on landscaped grounds with flower gardens and acres of wood across the road in beautiful conservation land.
Please consider before you decide to book: My home is environmentally conservative. It is very important for guests to be sensitive and conserve heat and well water; as my resources are limited. Tiny carbon foot prints only, please!
The efficiency unit includes a bedroom with a queen size bed, recliner; full bathroom; kitchenette (including fridge, sink, microwave, coffee unit, toaster oven; efficiency supplies); sun-room sitting area for reading, sketching or simply lounging; outside deck with garden pond; barn, fields (and field swings!) A great area to paint or write. The unit is internet wireless accessible. There is a well-lit entrance path leading to the unit; plenty of parking space. The home is directly across from acres of conservation land for trail walking, hiking, biking, or nature wandering.

Convenient location is close to the Five Colleges Area of Western MA (Amherst College, UMass, Hampshire College. Smith College and Mt Holyoke College) for those attending conferences, workshops, meetings or simply enjoying great out-of-door activities which abound in our rivers, lakes, mountains. The artist's community is exciting with theater, exhibits and other cultural events. Own transportation is a must. Enjoy!

Guest Access

You can expect a fully private efficiency unit, with a separate entrance (lit at night) just to the left of the home. Please park on the left side of drive. This is a delightful area for conservation lands which are directly across from my home; trails and more trails for hiking, biking, xc skiing!

Interaction with Guests

I want guests to enjoy their privacy, because that is very important to most people; the efficiency unit a get-away from your work, a vacation spot, so with a brief warm welcome, and/or any questions or concerns you may have, just walk right in a make yourselves comfortable. I am a quiet person and have to get up early for my teaching job, thank your for your understanding.

The Neighborhood

The neighborhood is rural; homes far enough apart for privacy; its a great location (only 4 miles easy drive to downtown Amherst) whether you are here on business or just exploring the area.

Getting around

You need a car for transportation!

Other Things to Note

The unit is set up for the one or two individuals who are signed up as GUESTS by Airbnb; other individuals are not allowed access to my unit or on premises, without specific permission by Holland, owner.

  • We had a wonderful, relaxing stay at Holland's efficiency. Her house and surrounding yard were beautiful and the efficiency was charming and full of character. Hard to believe, but the efficiency and her backyard are even prettier in person. It's just a few minutes drive from downtown Amherst, so the location is very convenient. If you're vacationing in the area, I would highly recommend staying here. Holland gives you plenty of privacy, but is super friendly and answers any questions you might have. Great experience.

  • Holland’s place was exactly what we were looking for. Peaceful, quiet, surrounded with animals and so much green! Waking up with birds singing, having breakfast on the deck while watching dragon flies and hummingbirds, stumbling on a fox in the evening and saying goodnight to the hundreds of fireflies lighting the beautiful garden. All this is minutes away from downtown Amherst with many restaurants and shops and a weekly farmers market. The unit had everything we needed. A very comfortable bed, a cute&clean bathroom, a functional kitchenette and a sunroom with large windows. Holland is a wildlife artist and her artwork is neatly placed in the area without dominating the landscape. We spent 10 days there and didn’t want to leave.
She created a wonderful world for herself and we are thankful that she shared with us this beautiful retreat.

  • This is a very special refuge -- an artful, enchanting place to stay in a private setting only ten minutes away from the center of Amherst. What's unique is that the ambience is magical and, at the same time, the bed and other furnishing are wonderfully comfortable-- a rare balance of winsomeness and practicality.

Outside, the grounds are filled with the owner's reverence for nature: a small fish pond with water flowing from rocks above, beautiful wooden and metal outdoor sculptures by the artist/owner, even a lovely fence build from young fallen trees.

And a sunny glassed-in porch makes it possible to be close to all that beauty but sit "inside" and read, relax, spend time with friends.

  • Holland was very good about answering all my disorganized last minute questions. We basically slept there. Bed was very comfy. There is great wifi but no cell service.
The area is beautiful. It is worth a drive in all directions.

  • Hollands unit was very comfortable and clean and quiet. It had everything one would need. Holland was very communicative and always available for questions. The greatest perk is the outside area. It is a gorgeous tranquil yard and we didn't want to leave because of it. She has a peaceful beautiful home and I highly recommend staying there. Thank you Holland.

  • What a great place to stay while in the Amherst area. Holland greeted us kindly and gave us privacy. We sat on the platform outside and enjoyed the nearly full moon. Wonderful gardens with art from a very talented artist. A big, glassed in porch. It was quiet and restful. Plus centrally located to either hiking or town.

    Response from Holland:

thanks for telling me about the scent, I had no idea or was not able to smell the scent, but I will definitely adjust that, thanks for your input

  • We had a really nice stay at Holland's private unit. We were visiting Amherst for the UMass graduation so we didn't spend very much time relaxing at this house. We really would have liked to stay longer and hang out there. It is such a relaxing spot. It was about a 15 minute drive from campus on a very quiet street. The space is really adorable and well appointed. The bathroom was nice and clean. The bed was very comfy and cozy. Holland greeted us when we arrived and was very courteous.

  • This cozy cabin was a convenient, short drive from Amherst where I was doing research. Holland is a gracious host, and provided everything to assure comfort and ease. Because it was raining I didn't take advantage of the outdoor beauty.

  • We had a great stay (in spite of the rainy weather). Holland's place is lovely and the accommodations were everything we we hoping for.

    April 2014
  • We were pleasantly greeted by Holland upon arrival. The grounds and living quarters are well-appointed and we had everything we needed. There were snack items like fresh fruit and yogurt left for us, as well as clean towels and washcloths. The area is very quiet and scenic; it truly felt like a getaway. Discerning travelers would be very satisfied staying in Holland's home. She is a wonderful host!

I am a wildlife artist/sculptor and enjoy working on my art projects in between my full time job as a high school teacher. I enjoy nature and outdoor activities and environmental issues are important to me. I have been living in this beautiful land of western Massachusetts for more than twenty years. The natural environment here is peaceful, the surrounding towns are full of exciting things to do and education is the hub.
