Quiet Clean Bayou St. John Studio

House - Entire home/apt · Dumaine Street, New Orleans, LA 70119, United States

The Space

This is the back half of our home that we have lovingly renovated just off of beautiful Bayou Saint John. It is a clean and bright studio apartment with its own private entrance. The kitchen is well-equipped with a stove, microwave, full-sized fridge, and useful cooking items like oil and vinegar, tea and coffee, and all the implements you would need for making a meal. The bed is a memory-foam queen, and we have a twin air-mattress as well. The porch-swing is, no humility here, the best! The yard is shared with a 30 foot tall sycamore tree named Elvis, and not a neighbor will be able to see you if you choose to drink your coffee on the porch in your nightwear.

Bayou St. John is an adorable, sociable and historic neighborhood in the center of the city 2 miles from the French Quarter. Walk to the grocery store, the coffee shop, several restaurants, and a teeny neighborhood bar. We are 2 blocks from the Bayou, which is the tail-end of stunning City Park, both of which are full of runners, fishers, dogs, kids and even the occasional pelican or alligator! (He's very small.) There's a beautiful footbridge over the water where all us neighbors take our walks in the evenings.

There are bikes, buses, trolley's and of course, feet for getting around and we will be happy to help you figure out which one is best.

  • We loved this place! Brooke was awesome and helpful. We never met Elliot, sadly. The place is even larger and lovelier than it looks. Brand new and sparkling, it is breezy, quiet and classy. The bathtub, yes, is fantastic, as is the porch swing. My main advice is for you to immediately rent a bike from Confederacy of Cruisers or Michael's in the Marigny. It is a 10-15 minute or so bike ride to the Quarter/Marigny, about a 35 minute walk. Cabs are a little tricky so make sure to keep the phone number for United cabs with you. When calling a cab from Brooke's place, it usually took them 10 minutes to come and it took about 10 minutes to get to the Quarter and cost $11-12.

  • I really enjoyed staying at Brooke and Elliot's place. I loved that it was light and airy with lots of natural sunlight coming in. It really was clean and quiet, like they say, and it was great to have the little porch and small yard to hang out in. (My dog liked that too). The neighborhood is eclectic and friendly with several cafés, restaurants and a grocery store nearby. Walking my dog along the bayou was a treat too. I didn't get to spend any time with Elliot but I really enjoyed getting to know Brooke. She was the perfect host. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

  • My wife Diane Frigon and I stayed at the Browns in New Orleans for 2 days.
The apartment was indeed quiet and clean. The Browns were very hospitable and friendly. Access to nearby restaurants and downtown transportation was simple and close. The area was also very clean and friendly with a beautiful bayou within walking distance...as were the quality restaurants. The apartment is in the back of their home and easy to access. A warm and sunny location, to be sure. We highly recommend the Bayou St.John Studio

  • It was a great experience to meet Brooke and Elliot and stay at their place. They were really kind and nice and I hope we meet again some day! The house is beautiful and confortable, small garden with a swing, big kitchen, huge bathtub (really good bathroom) and confortable bed. The only thing, internet goes slow sometimes. It is the perfect place to take a break after visiting crazy NOLA. Close to St. John Bayou, City Park and Esplanade. Good neighborhood easy to get by bike or tram (around 15 min away). We would definitelly recomend this apartment.

  • Clean and spacious. Brooke and Eliot have done a great job appointing the studio with all the small yet necessary items a traveler needs (shampoo and conditioner, a corkscrew, tea, etcetera). Travelers should just have a sense of how they plan to get around - because the studio is in more of a residential area, getting taxis requires a little more effort than in other parts of New Orleans. But overall, certainly recommended!

  • Brooke and Eliot were wonderful hosts -- they are so thoughtful and helpful and provided everything we might need. The place is quite spacious and nice; we especially loved the beautiful bathroom and the tub/shower for giants! Staying at the studio allowed us to have a different experience than just staying in a hotel in a tourist-y location. You can pretty easily find a place to park nearby if you're driving and stops for public transit are definitely walkable and cheap (and a nice way to see the city as well). We would highly recommend staying here to anyone visiting New Orleans.

All in all it was a great experience - I would definitely stay here again!

  • B&E's studio is lovely and simple. The pics don't do it justice. Highlights were the bathtub for giants, bathroom stonework, gas range and super comfy bed. We stayed for four days and used the streetcars to get around. The neighb was great, safe and friendly. B&E gave great recommendations for music and food around town. They are friendly, down-to-earth people that have created something beautiful.

  • Brooke and Eliot were both great hosts. Aside from an amazing place to stay in a great location near a really cool bayou, they gave us great advice about a parade happening that we never would have known about otherwise. Would totally stay again!

  • Brooke and Eliot were very helpful and friendly hosts, providing good advice about the neighborhood. The apartment was very clean though spare. The neighborhood is beautiful, safe and convenient. I would definitely stay in Bayou St. John again!

We are a couple of post Katrina transplants. We caught the bug after doing relief work for a year and decided to call this crazy and beautiful city home. We've been slowly fixing this house up since 2008. When not in use as a space for guests, the back half of our house supports Eliot's art-making habits! Our days are generally filled with our work fixing up folk's houses, and our evening we sometimes manage to escape to see our friend's shows around town. We are very proud of our adopted city, and we can help get you to where you want to go, and even to places you didn't even know you wanted to go!
