With the house comes a quiet loveable big outdoor tabby cat -- he comes and goes through his cat door to eat and sometimes sleep but you won't see him much unless you love him. We are currently considering a new home for him but if anyone has cat allergies, this might not be the home for you to rent.
Guests can use the whole house. A light breakfast for your first day of your stay will be left in a basket in the fridge -- fruit, yogurt, granola, cream, coffee, and lovely bread. The house will be managed by neighbours when i am out of town but i will be close enough if you need me (35 kilometres away at my cabin in the woods).
Interaction with Guests
There is a chance that we may not be on site as we will also be travelling this summer. There will be a point person to help you if you need. Some weeks we will be staying locally and get help you ourselves. Guests will be using the whole house.
A neighbour will check in and be available for any problems.
A wonderful small community of close together houses on a relatively quiet downtown street -- the neighbours are all friends and we are a little happy community. You might even get a drop in visitor from a neighbour if you are (un?)lucky!
Public transportation is 50 meters from the door and we are 5 city blocks from downtown --walking distance is 10 minutes -- about one kilometre.
Other Things to Note
Parking for free in front of the house on the street 24 hours a day (April - December) and privately (free, December - March).
Our home is for one or two quiet couples or solo visitor or small family. While we adore little children, the house really a more mature space and there are safety concerns for children (no bannister, loose polished glass jewels in the floor, expensive earthen ware plates and a slate floor etc.).
We ask our guests to not have parties in the home under any circumstances and explicitly ask that the house be used only by the renting guests -- this extends to dinner or breakfast parties or any entertaining. We are meaningfully careful in this regard as this is our little loved home and not a hotel nor a restaurant.
This is a no smoking environment and no pets please -- besides the orange tabby who frequents us) We ask that our household furniture and belongings are not brought out onto the deck and that our books and instruments are enjoyed at the house. We ask that for the summer, the woodstove not be lit.
Smoking is permitted on the back deck but please be careful and use the tin with water for butts. If you are enjoying the back deck in the evening, please note that the houses are close together and the by-law requires that there is quiet after 11 p.m.
My colleague and I enjoyed the urban cabin immensely. The decor was very unique and eclectic. Heidi met us on our day of arrival and was near by should we need her. The accommodations were great and we appreciated the private backyard and the homes proximity to kingston's city centre
Our family spent a great long weekend in Heidi's house. Her house is a short walk over to Princess for restaurants, bakeries, etc, but far enough that the house is very quiet at night. The house has an extremely natural feel to it (lots of wood and stone), and is very bright and cheerful in look and feel. The kitchen is well-equipped, with a very nice gas stove, dishwasher, etc. We really didn't need any assistance from Heidi during our stay but we ran in to her a few times outside and she was always very friendly and helpful.
We enjoyed our stay at the Urban Cabin. The house was as quaint and rustic as shown in the pictures and that was what attracted me to it in the first place.
The neighbourhood was quite unique and within walking distance of downtown. It was also close enough to the venue for our son's wedding that we could walk. ( No worry about drinking and driving).
We were in Kingston for our son's commencement and our stay at Heidi's was excellent. The house has a real "home" feel about and even comes with a cat! who is exceptionally friendly. Everything we needed for our stay was there and we had no issues with the accommodation. The location is convenient to the heart of Kingston.
Heidi's place was perfect. Though she was unable to meet us in person, as she was away herself, she had organized everything so well. There were detailed notes about the house, instructions, and labels which made staying there a breeze. Communication and correspondence with Heidi was ideal as well.
The house itself was not only an "urban cabin" nestled along a very quiet stretch of Bagot Street, but also a hidden gem at that. Warm and inviting, quirky and whimsical, rustic yet modern, clean and well maintained...Heidi's home was all of those things. Add in one extremely friendly and charming orange tabby cat and you got yourself a wonderful weekend getaway for two...well three, if you include Marmalade.
We would highly recommend anyone wanting an unique experience to seriously consider Heidi's place. On our first night, we explored downtown Kingston which was only a ten minute walk away! We then retreated back to our cozy cabin. With wine and cheese at the ready, we hung out around the kitchen island in the newly renovated kitchen...our favourite spot in the entire house...the photos don't do it justice. The design and "homey"ness of it all really made us feel happy and inspired and the thoughtful morning coffee and breakfast starters that Heidi left for us made us feel welcome and well looked after. Can you tell we really enjoyed our visit?
Thank you Heidi and Marmalade! Hope to see you again soon.
Holy Smokes and Shucks! That is a great writeup! Marmalade is blushing. Honestly, i think this world is so much about the lens through which we choose to see it. Jill, you have been happy, delighted, excited and positive since our first communication. That you appreciated, really saw, and loved our little whimsical home makes me so happy. It is a joy in so many ways to have designed and made it and now, to share it with folks like you. Happy travels!
It's a lovely home located in the east part of Kingston - a stone's throw from downtown Kingston. The house is very creative; always an interesting nook, a piece of pottery or art to view.
Heidi left us some bagels, milk and coffee to get the morning started - and left us a map, brochures, etc., to help us find our way around. Everything in the home was easy to figure out; everything clearly marked in terms of what we could/couldn't use - very helpful. Heidi responded to any email or text very quickly.
Beautiful cottage. Relaxing and Zen environment. Heidi was a friendly, accommodating host. Marmalade the cat is lovely too. Walking distance to downtown and campus. I would highly recommend staying here.
About the Host, Heidi
I am a grown up traveller type who now prefers a dock and a gin and tonic on a local Canadian Shield Lake to city living (though i love our neighbourhood dearly). I spend my summer at my cabin north of Kingston and my home then stands empty for most of the summer.
I recently completed a PhD at Queen's and am delighted for that part of my life to be over! Playing in the wilderness in a canoe, kayak, or hiking and trail running are my passions.
The urban cabin will be all set for you and you might not actually connect with me in person but will meet one of our fine neighbours! This little two blocks we live on are full of fun families with children. It's an active street of socializing neighbours walking barefoot with beers or coffees to say hello to each other. Prepare to get caught in the cross fire of this fun community energy.
As for me? I am a connector. I love people, pets, friends, and tables full of laughing people drinking good wine. I am trusting and kind and want lovely humans to live in my home.
My background is in teaching and learning. I am a therapist by profession and a coffee barista in my heart!! I love children though i only got gifted one, she is a marvellous human who delights me every day.I love flowers and gardens and am a local food, local economy type human.
You will find me reflected in the earthiness of this home...wood timbers, warm colours, stone, brick, wood floors, American Clay plaster walls, local artist work and pottery and blown glass, books books and more books.
I am also an "emergent" artist... so my house has fun art and things dancing around in it!
My daughter and i are Airbnb users and recently travelled Italy with backpacks staying in magnificent people's homes, meeting locals, learning about the best places to eat and things to see this way. I am hooked on the magic of sharing our homes and lives with other travellers in this way. We are basically paying for each other to travel!
I look forward to sharing my home and it's energy and community with you...
