About This Listing
Practice yoga at the beach, swim in the ocean or just soak some rays when you stay with us because we're only a 5 minute walk to the beach. You can also go to the beachfront cafe/restaurant to mingle with locals or come visit our dairy farm!
(Our "Room by the Beach" is located on the island of São Miguel; not to be confused with our condo which is available on the island of Terceira and can be seen here: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1040870)
If you want to immerse yourself in peace and be removed from the confusion of city life, our home is suitable for you. We live like most people here on the island, meaning our home and lifestyle is simple and uncomplicated.
Our place would NOT be a good fit for your needs if:
- You're looking for luxury, amenities, or style
- Animals make you uncomfortable (we have 4 indoor/outdoor pets, sometimes 5 if we're fostering an animal)
- You need a heater or air conditioner (we have lots of blankets for warmth and ocean air for cooling)
- You are looking for a hotel-like experience
Here, you'll likely see cows walking the streets, open your window and hear the ocean waves from your bedroom, listen to birds sing and watch as time moves slowly. When you stay with us, you can expect your experience to be more like that of a homestay than a traditional bed and breakfast. We have chickens, roosters, 3 cats and a dog at our home and we own a dairy farm with grass-fed cows about 15 minutes away. We'd be happy to show you our farm and give you a taste of our healthy raw milk if you so wish.
We can't commit to providing breakfast, but the likelihood is that we'll be offering you eggs from pasture-raised chickens and if I have made cheese, you'll be welcome to that as well.
Our home is very simple, surrounded by pastures, a stunning view of the ocean and enclosed by tall bamboos which give us a great deal of privacy. The beach is a 5 minute walk away. We live on a hill, which so far hasn't been a problem for our guests, but if you can't walk up/down hill a bit than you can drive. We have a lovely little restaurant located before you reach the beach and a cozy cafe/restaurant on the beachfront. The village center is about a 2 min. drive / 10 min. walk away and you'll find some mini grocery markets, a restaurant and the fishing port there.
The city of Ponta Delgada is about a 20 minute drive away and the city of Ribeira Grande is approx. 10 minutes away.
The two tea plantations (Cha Porto Formoso and Cha Gorreana) are a short drive away (or a 30 min. walk to Cha Porto Formoso) and are worth a visit to try the local organic teas and learn how tea is grown and harvested using methods that have changed very little in the past 130 years. In the beginning of May each year Cha Porto Formoso celebrates the beginning of harvest season. The highest point of the celebration is a re-enactment of a 19th century tea harvest in which dozens of people in regional costumes take part.
If hot springs (Caldeira Velha), a hike down to a lake (Lagoa do Fogo) and one of the highest view points on the island (Pico da Barrosa - 947 meters / 3106 feet) sound good to you, then you are in luck because the access road to these 3 amazing locations is only about a 10 minute drive from our home (then you have to drive up to each of the locations).
If you like scuba diving or hiking, we can connect you with the best local family run company to organize these activities for you as well.

Interaction with Guests
We are always happy to interact with our guests to the extent that they want when we are not working. If someone wants to come to our home to simply relax and enjoy a level of solitude, we respect that. If someone decides to stay with us so that they can interact with locals, find out about things to do on the island and share some conversation we welcome that fully as well.
We can provide you with the contact information to a rental car agency, especially if you would like to have a car waiting for you at the airport.
The bus stop is about a 10 minute walk away and we've had guests get around hitchhiking as it's commonplace here. But, the easiest way is with a vehicle (we have private parking at our home).
Other Things to Note
The check-in/out times are flexible depending on whether or not we have other guests booking the room on those dates. Just let us know in advance if you need an earlier/later check-in/out time and we will let you know if we can accommodate your request.
- Our food items (spices, cooking oils, etc.) are not for guest use. If you plan to use the kitchen, please be prepared with the food items you will need. (We can offer you salt, pepper, eggs and raw milk.)
- After washing your dishes, please dry and put them back on the shelves.
- Please bring your own soap and shampoo
- Be aware of the electric power consumption
- Do not use metal utensils with pots
- Do not smoke inside of the house (outside away from doorways is fine)
This typical cheese is called Queijo Fresco and traditionally is wrapped in leaves and topped with homemade crushed peppers. We make ours from raw milk from grass-fed cows. If I happened to have made some during your visit, I'll be sure to offer!
My stay at Gena and Joao's place was wonderful. The first thing you notice when you arrive is the stunning view of the coastline and the beach below. Also, right around the corner from their house is a stunning waterfall that is adorned with landscaped gardens and picnic areas.
Gena and Joao are super nice people. They are welcoming, friendly, helpful and communicative. They really make you feel comfortable, just like you were at home. Their house is at an amazing spot with view to the ocean. You can even hear the waves crashing from their yard, and the beach is 2 minutes walk from the house. The room is simple but cosy and spacious, it really fits your needs. And let's don't forget about Gena's and Joao's lovely and extremely friendly pets, who made my time even happier there!
We had such a wonderful stay with Gena and João, and wish it could have been for much longer. The house is really nice and bright. It is surrounded by greenery, feels very private, and the view of the ocean from out front is absolutely gorgeous. The cats and dog were so sweet, and it was lovely having fresh eggs in the morning. Gena and João made us feel so welcomed, and we really enjoyed our long conversations with them. We also had a great time visiting the farm. We can't wait to come back!
I can hardly put into words how amazing this place and it's inhabitants (Gena, Joao and all their "babies") are. You find yourself on top of a small hill with a stunning view. The room was clean and simple (which I dig), you share the rest of the house (which is very uncomplicated). There are animals everywhere, cows, hens, cats, the dog... you feel the freedom and peace of this place immediately. Gena and Joao made it very easy for me to feel like home. We had so much inspiring talks, shared breakfast and dinner, they even invited me to share more wonderful moments with them and their loved ones. I made new friends in paradise - and I thank you for warming my heart and soul :)
Staying with Gena and Joao was such a treat. They were both incredibly friendly and helped us get the most out of our stay on the island. There's a lot to do nearby and it's a great jumping off point for Lagoa do Fogo and the northeastern county of Nordeste.
The view is something I didn't fully expect, walking outside the morning after we arrived and hearing the waves crashing was a treat. We only had a short stay, but I would most certainly recommend it to anyone else hopping from place to place throughout the island.
By coincidence, Gena and Joao were also great friends with our scuba instructor (Bruno at Best Spot) who I also can't recommend enough.
Positively uplifting-- the view, the home, the environment. I had such a peaceful visit in Gena's home. You really DO hear waves crashing and smell the fresh air as you wake up. Honestly, I've never been surrounded by such an abundance of natural beauty. I am so grateful to Gena & her husband for sharing this abundance. Peace and joy to your sweet farm (website hidden) while walking the amazing town, be sure to give Dos Moinhos your business, they are kind wonderful people. And they serve strong coffee and delicious food.
