The Space

Our Garden Level (basement) studio is brand new in 2010 and fully furnished in a relaxed modern style with Swedish touches by my wife, who's family are of the Jamestown Swedish community. Välkommen! Everything is kept sparkling clean by our long-time helpers, and Meg and I take a lot of pride in helping our guests have a pleasant and rewarding time at Chautauqua.
37 Foster has a prime location in Chautauqua, 1 block from the Brick Walk, mid-way between the Amphitheatre and the Hall of Philosophy. It's just a few blocks to the lake. The tram stops at our corner, and the Children's School bus stops nearby.
The Garden Studio has it's own outdoor sitting area, A/C, floor heating, WiFi, Flat screen cable TV, all the modern kitchen conveniences, and an oversize shower, We provide all linens, towels, kitchen utensils, dishes, silverware, everything you need to just unpack and enjoy.
There are many dining places a short walk away, from the 19th century elegance of the Athenaeum Hotel, to the casual dining of the Brick Walk Cafe. In addition, you can find a a wide range of restaurants, including some lakeside dining places, a short drive away.
If there is any way we can be of help, we look forward to hearing your questions. During the Chautauqua Season we rent by the week, Saturday to Saturday. If you are new to Chautauqua, we recommend it web site, which you can find by searching "Chautauqua Institution" for information about the fabulous entertainment, culture, and education available during the summer season.

  • We had a great stay at 37 Foster Ave Left @ Chautauqua Institution. The house was perfect and well supplied for a great vacation. The location was wonderful and only a 2-3 block walk to the lake! Lyle was welcoming and helpful. We had a great time there and hope to return.

  • 37 Foster is a wonderful home in a wonderful location! It is close to the lake and all of the happenings in Chautuaqua Institute. Lyle has created a home away from home - all that is needed is you and your choice of food. Lyle (email hidden) and has created a private getaway in a most tranquil setting. For my wife and I, 37 Foster was a penthouse suite and allowed us to live and breathe Chautuaqua as 'residents' of the Institute. Don't consider an Inn or a hotel if 37 Foster is available!

My wife and I are retired professors teaching part-time. We're musicians (clarinet, violin) interested in the arts, especially classical music. We have just finished a fascinating, unforgettable year in Japan as visiting professors. We love sharing our Chautauqua vacation home with others, because the Chautauqua Institution is a unique opportunity for recreation, education, relaxation and life-long learning. There's no place like it! All four seasons in Chautauqua are amazing. The many people who come for the 9 week summer program season enjoy a pleasantly cool retreat lakeside. In the autumn the crisp, bright air and the fall colors are a sight to behold. Winter in Chautauqua brings out the toboggan, cross-country skis, downhill skiing at Peek 'n' Peak and Holiday Valley, horse-drawn sleigh rides around the grounds, and a glass of spiced wine by the fire. Yumm. After the deep snows, when spring comes, the Plaza is ablaze with tulips, and the "snow birds" gradually return, energizing the whole cycle again. We like to cook, and there are many farm stands and markets nearby to source local Chautauqua County produce from. Since our year in Japan, we've been know to produce a 7-course Japanese gourmet dinner on occasion--a lot of work, but worth it. As avid readers, we can usually be found with Meg's nose in a detective story, especially one with a woman detective, and Lyle might have a history, biography, or modern American volume open. He likes to keep up with his German by reading, too. We've had some amazing experiences with people around the world and made friends in many corners of the globe. Many of our guests return year after year, and we consider them treasured friends, (email hidden), everyone should be able to just unpack and have a great vacation, but everything they need is right at hand That's our goal.
