We are a friendly couple offering one spacious, clean, comfortable, modern room sleeping 1-3 people. In a quiet location in Cockermouth in the NW Lake District.
Off-street parking and free WIFI.
Our breakfasts use fabulous organic Cumbrian produce and we also offer delicious "Taste of Cumbria" evening meals.
The bedroom is on the ground floor with a firm double bed and 100% cotton sheets. The room can also be used as a twin or sleep 3 with the addition of a comfortable single bed. It has a tv/dvd player and we are happy to lend you a book or two to read during your stay.
We provide complimentary home-made cake or biscuits on the hospitality tray every day.
The coffee is fresh and Fair-trade . There is local organic milk to go with it, no horrible UHT cartons.
There is a shared toilet adjacent to the room and your own private bathroom with toilet and bath/shower on the first floor complete with fluffy towels and bathrobes.
Our guests say our breakfasts are outstanding. The standard price includes a breakfast of fresh fruit juice, muesli or porridge, organic yoghurt, compote made from fruit from our kitchen garden and our own bread/toast served with locally made preserves. Plus unlimited fair-trade tea or coffee.
If you would like to try a generous Cumbrian cooked breakfast consisting of any combination of eggs, bacon, sausages(all organic), tomatoes, baked beans, home-made potato cakes and mushrooms this will cost an extra £5 per person.
Your breakfast will be served in our light and airy conservatory which has views into our wildlife-friendly garden.
We have lived in Cockermouth for more than 30 years and have a good knowledge of the best local restaurants,
real ale pubs, shopping, attractions, walks etc. We will be on hand to see to your comfort and answer any questions you might have during your stay.
If you want to chat with us over meals we are happy to do that but if you just want to "chill" that is fine too.
Cockermouth itself is a lovely, friendly little market town on the NW edge of the Lake District. It has stacks of real ale pubs, good coffee shops and restaurants as well as a wide variety of interesting independent shops in which to browse.
There is no necessity to have a car if you chose to stay with us. The best rail stations to reach us are either Carlisle or Penrith. You can catch buses from either directly to Cockermouth. (Takes 50 mins or 1hr 50 respectively)
From the centre of this small town you can walk to our B+B in 15 minutes or get a taxi.
If you want to go further into the Lakes you can catch a bus to Keswick (25 minutes away) and from there travel to any of the towns or beauty spots you want to visit.
I warmly recommend Briar Bank. A very comfortable, good quality bed in a spotlessly clean room is a good start. Add to this a very warm welcome, home cooked treats and the choice of a normal breakfast of fruit compote, porridge or muesli, followed by toast or a full English at a supplement (rather than paying for the full English whether you want it or not - we didn't) and things are looking even better. The physical warmth - the heating worked well - matched the warmth of the welcome and pound for pound this place is an absolute winner.
Oh, and it had Radio 4 via the digital TV. Definitely the icing on the cake.
Sharon's and Richard place is fabulous. They are great host, friendly and accommodated us with great care. We were served with cup cakes when we arrived. We chose the option of having dinner at Sharon's place. The food was very delicious. Sharon is a great chef, she prepares delicious food. Morning breakfast was delicious and we were offered with quite few choices to choose from.
We highly recommend Sharon's place and we would like to stay again if we are in lake district.
The room was comfortable and the baked goods were great! The location was good for exploring the NW Lakes District. Sharon and Richard were helpful with ideas on what to do on our last day and Richard loaned us a book and map, which was invaluable.
Fabulous room, clean fresh and good atmosphere too. The breakfast was just right and i am delighted to have found this place. Will be staying again if im up that way. Thanks Sharon and Richard
Had a fantastic stay at Briar Bank with Sharon and Richard as friendly, helpful and knowledgeable hosts. The room was large, warm and comfortable and the baked treats and home-made bread are as delicious as all the reviews suggest! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Sharon as a host and would stay here again in future.
Sharon and her husband we so accommodating, very friendly and incredibly helpful. We cycled the C2C route and stayed here before we started (after driving up from Kent). It's a great location, perfect for walkers and cyclists.
The room was large, warm and comfortable...and we even had cake on arrival!
Highly recommended, many thanks.
We really couldn't have wished for a nicer family and within walking distance from such a beautiful village. Sharon made us feel very welcome and made us a lovely breakfast every morning which set us up perfectly for exploring the incredible lake district. I would highly recommend Sharon as a host and if I am visiting the area again I will stay here again. Thank you.

Sharon was a wonderful host and provided as much information as possible throughout our stay. The room was spacious and the bed was very comfortable, each day we were welcomed with home-made treats in our room. We opted for cooked breakfast each morning which did not disappoint! Plenty of choice to keep us fuelled for our 9 mile walk. Sharon made us feel very welcome, even borrowing us detailed maps for our explorations. Briar Bank has excellent certifications for hosting and food hygiene. We will definitely return on our next visit to Cockermouth.
