Description

The space

The bedroom is on the ground floor with a firm double bed and 100% cotton sheets. The room can also be used as a twin or sleep 3 with the addition of a comfortable single bed. It has a tv/dvd player and we are happy to lend you a book or two to read during your stay.
We provide complimentary home-made cake or biscuits on the hospitality tray every day.
The coffee is fresh and Fair-trade . There is local organic milk to go with it, no horrible UHT cartons.
There is a shared toilet adjacent to the room. Your private bathroom with toilet and bath/shower is on the first floor.
Our guests say our breakfasts are outstanding. You can expect fresh fruit juice, muesli or porridge, organic yoghurt, compote made from fruit from our kitchen garden and home-made bread/toast served with locally made preserves. Plus unlimited fair-trade tea or coffee.
If you would like to try a generous Cumbrian cooked breakfast consisting of any combination of eggs, bacon, sausages(all organic), tomatoes, baked beans, and mushrooms this will cost an extra £5 per person.

Guest access

Enjoy your breakfast in our light and airy conservatory which has views into our wildlife-friendly garden.

Interaction with guests

We have lived in Cockermouth for more than 30 years and have a good knowledge of the best local restaurants, real ale pubs, shopping, attractions, walks etc. We will be on hand to see to your comfort and answer any questions you might have during your stay.
If you want to chat with us over meals we are happy to do that but if you just want to "chill" that is fine too.
We are gay and lesbian friendly.

Guided walks with Sharon's husband Richard: please see 'Other Things to Note' (below) for details.

The neighborhood

Cockermouth itself is a lovely, friendly little market town on the NW edge of the Lake District. It has many real ale pubs, good coffee shops and restaurants as well as a wide variety of interesting independent shops in which to browse. Our home is 12- 15 minutes pleasant walk or 5 minutes drive from the centre.

Getting around

There is no necessity to have a car if you chose to stay with us. The best rail stations to reach us are either Carlisle (bus service 600) or Penrith (bus service X4/X5). You can catch buses from either directly to Cockermouth. (Takes 50 mins or 1hr 50 respectively)
From the centre of this small town you can walk to our B+B in 15 minutes or get a taxi.
If you want to go further into the Lakes you can catch a bus to Keswick (25 minutes away) and from there travel to any of the towns or beauty spots you want to visit.

Guided walks with Sharon's husband Richard: please see 'Other Things to Note' (above) for details.

Other things to note

If you enjoy meeting the locals and sampling the food of the area you are visiting you are in for a treat. You will have seen from the guest reviews that I am an enthusiastic cook. Every few months I throw open my home for the evening to a group of up to 10 diners. Everyone shares a single table and enjoys a fabulous 5-course meal using organic Cumbrian food and good conversation or, as we say in Cumbria, good "craic" for only £25 per person. (Bring your own wine). Most of the dishes are shared so you can eat as much or as little as you like and vegetarians are welcome.

The next meal will be on: Saturday 22nd April 2017.
I will be creating a delicious feast of spring dishes using (mostly) organic Cumbrian produce.
Do contact me if you would like further information or look on-line for my website "Briar Bank Home Supper Club." Also, If you are staying with Airbnb in the area and would like to make a booking for the supper club please get in touch and we will do our best to find you a place at the table.

Guided Walks!
We are offering half-day guided walks in the lovely Buttermere valley tailored to meet your preference and ability. With Sharon's husband Richard as your knowledgeable guide, this is your chance to get 'off the beaten track' a little and discover the hidden Lakeland which most visitors miss. Experience the landscape, culture and wildlife of the National Park at close quarters. The price, which includes transport and a home-made snack, is £20 for a single person, £30 for a couple or £40 for a threesome. Unmissable! Search 'Buttermere Valley Guided Walks' for Richard's website.
(If you might be interested please mention it when inquiring or booking, or as soon as possible thereafter.)

Sharon is a very well organized and friendly hostess with a clean, affordable, and comfortable room. It was very nice to have our own dedicated bathroom, and we really enjoyed our homemade breakfast and guided walk around Buttermere.

My fourth stay at Sharon's this year and again it was fantastic - that's why I keep coming back! Comfy bed, delicious sweet treats and a cosy setting. Sharon and Richard's knowledge of the area is excellent, meaning that they're always able to make further suggestions for places to visit. Highly recommend - thanks for a lovely stay.

Our Stay in 'Cockermouth' could not have been better and we made the best choice of staying here. We enjoyed the stay with our lovely host Sharon and Richard. House and the room was as described in their page and very clean. We were welcomed with Carrot cake and tea and it was so good. Richard and Sharon were very friendly and guided us on the places nearby. The breakfast was excellent. Sharon was very sweet to provide us the vegetarian sausages and baked beans as part of the Cumbrian breakfast. I (Deepika) enjoyed the talks with Sharon on cooking as we shared the same hobby. We were told that Lake District during a Bank Holiday would be very crowded. Richard proved this wrong. He took us to the best of walking tour near 'Buttermere' and 'Crummock water' lake. We felt like it was just the nature and us. He knows so much about the area and made it even more interesting with his knowledge on the plants grown there, medicinal values, the landscape, cattle (belted cows was very interesting) and the lakes around. He was so kind enough to take us to the fuel station and show us Cockermouth Market area and best of pubs and restaurants there. Thanks a lot to this lovely couple for their wonderful hosting. Hope to stay here again.

Had a great stay with Sharon and Richard while up in the Lake District for a wedding close-by. Room was clean and ideal for our needs (base to go to nearby wedding and visit tourist attractions next day) - loved the fresh baking and tea/coffee making facilities that awaited us on our arrival. Hosts were very flexible and allowed us to arrive early, very relaxed and made us feel at home. Breakfast was tasty and plenty to set us up for the day. Bed comfy and we got a very good night's sleep both nights. Overall fabulous hosts and would recommend.
