The Space

Experience authentic, Balinese life. The Payogan Homestay Villa is located within our traditional, Balinese family compound, a 20 minute walk away from Ubud. The villa is spacious, in the traditional Balinese style. Situated at the back of the compound, overlooking a rice field and tropical plantation, the villa offers more privacy and space. However, you will still wake up to the traditional sounds of Bali and experience the essence of staying in a Balinese village.

The space includes a full kitchen and dining room, three bedrooms, an indoor living space, and a large terrace. The open-air bathroom includes a tub and shower with hot water only a turn-of-a-tap away.

Living in a Balinese family compound means that you will have many friendly, neighbors. The compound is home to a large extended family, all of whom are very involved in traditional Balinese life, and committed to our village ceremonies, many of which take place in our family temple. We welcome you to participate if you choose. In fact, we encourage our guests to join us to get the true feeling of Balinese culture. We can always help you through the experience and provide the traditional wear.

As a licensed tour guide by profession, I can provide custom guided tours according to your interests and needs. We also provide airport transfer and local transportation at a very reasonable rate - we are only a call away.

Other highlights:
- Longer stays enjoy a significantly reduced room rate.
- Breakfast and/or other meals can be provided on request for minimal cost.

  • Very authentic place. The territory of villas likes a secret garden smothered in flowers and green. Soul is resting there. The house is made of natural materials; it’s so good to change concrete blocks of big cities to something ambient. Local nights are filled with thousands of strange sounds and scents. The true inwardness. Relax. Absolute humidity. The night hot shower under the stars, when you almost bathed in moonlight… It is that I'll be missing in the busy urban life. Thanks to Ketut and his hospitality. He is very kindly host and keeps a good house. And the big humorist)))) Ubud is doubtless the place where you must return.

  • Ketut and his family are very friendly and happy to help anytime. His daily visits to our house were welcomed as it gave us a chance to discuss Bali life, family life, and a variety of other topics. If you are looking for REAL Bali, this is a wonderful place to start.
    House is clean
    Beds are comfortable
Chickens are noisy.. but what chickens aren't.

  • I couldn't have dreamed of a better place to stay in Bali! If you are interested in seeing the real Bali, being a part of a community and meeting some beautiful people then stay at Payogan for sure. I had an unfortunate experience of losing my ATM card upon arrival and I was so grateful for the love and care I felt from this community especially Ketut who made sure I was fed and happy. He also took me around touring the area which I highly recommend. There are so many beautiful temples and dances and ceremonies all the time. The villas are gorgeous with or ate artwork and beautiful green plants everywhere. All in all I give payogan homestay 5 stars and I will most definitely be back

  • The four of us stayed in Ketut's homestay for three nights. He and his family were very friendly and helpful and fed us a nice breakfast each morning.
Is a 7 minute drive to central Ubud and maybe 45 minute walk.
The house we stayed in was fairly basic, and was reasonably clean. Electricity was a little intermittent (more Ubud issue than the homestay) which did make hot showers brief sometimes!
Just remember this is a homestay, so if you want to slowly rise in the morning, the army of roosters crowing at 5am will put pay to that as will the fettered smells (that's poo) of farmyard life wafting gently about you. The pounding disco across the way on Saturday night was unexpected, but they played some ok tunes so didn't bother me to much when it stopped at midnight.
All in all, not a bad place to stay. The price is right and it's a rustic homestay, so all I've mentioned is not unexpected.
If you are looking for homestays away from the hustle and bustle of central Ubud (where there are plenty) this is the place for you.

  • Living at Payogan Homestay was really ideal. Let me tell you why:

    1) It's close enough that you can easily get to Central Ubud, but far enough that you can get away from all the tourist hubbub.

    2) Payogan Village and the surrounding villages are filled with things to explore. Small warungs, temples, rice paddies...all the trappings of Balinese village life.

    3) The house itself is gorgeous. The pictures really don't do it justice.

    4) And most importantly, it's a family affair. You get to see and experience what it's like to live in a Balinese family complex, chickens and dogs and all. Ketut introduced us to his entire family. He made us feel very welcome and even treated us to a great breakfast one morning. He also offered us great advice regarding Ubud, such as the reasonable taxi rate to Central Ubud. His son, Made, patiently drove us around for an entire day. He took us wherever we wanted to go and when we asked him to show us his favorite food haunts, he introduced us to some fabulous local warungs and food stalls.

I would definitely go back to Payogan Homestay if I had the chance. Don't miss out and book this place for your holiday getaway!

  • My friend and I had a wonderful stay at Payogan Homestay. Ketut is very friendly and knowledgeable and knows everyone in Bali it seems :), and happy to share Bali culture with his guests. We watched gamelan practice in the village, and his son took us to Mt. Batur among other places. The bungalow was peaceful and spacious. Staying with Ketut was the best part of our time in Ubud, for sure. Thanks Ketut! I hope I can come back one day!

  • Ketut is wonderful person with a big heart! He treats you like you are apart of the family and truly gives you a local experience from the food to where you sleep. He even provided vegetarian dishes for me. Lastly, he happily answered all of my questions and gave my friends and I good recommendations for what to do in Bali.

  • If one wants to experience Bali and its famed culture in the truest form, there can't be any place better than Payogan homestay. Here you stay and interact with Ketut Mendra and his extended family, in the clean, beautiful and green family compound which is like a small village in itself. This is a full package and comes with all elements...families of roosters, hens and their young chicks, dogs, ducks, frogs, geckos, butterflys and assorted insects. We stayed in the independent villa which is at the back of the compound. This is a beautiful and spacious 2 storey structure with sloping tiled roofs and comes with a kitchen and a cosy dining space. There are 2 and half bedrooms, but the bedroom upstairs is the highlight. The beds and pillows are good and comfortable. There is one bathing and toilet area which is in the open Balinese concept. One more bathroom could have helped. The place is about 3-4 km from the center of Ubud and it is best to hire a vehicle or scooters to move around. There are lots of excellent dining options within 5-10 min scooter ride.

Ketut's sister Nyoman invited us to her house which is a nice walk in the middle of paddy fields. She is an experienced masseur and her messages are not to be missed, it is quite a difference experience compared to the assembly line massages in the spas.
Ketut is helpful and knowledgeable due to his long experience as a tour guide. He also offers B'fast, lunch, dinner and a host of services and can also arrange for tours and trips. But be sure to understand the offerings and the prices beforehand.
Overall, I would rate this as one of the best place to stay in the Ubud area.

  • The friendly and relaxed nature of Ketut and his two sons helped us and our three children under 3 years to feel comfortable in the beautiful villa/surroundings. Ketut happily integrated us within his extended family which was a truly memorable experience.

We only spent 2 nights in the Villa as we were on a tight schedule...but could have easily spent a week here.

Ketut is also a great tour guide and we enjoyed a half day tour as well as a full day tour to take in all the sites and sounds of Ubud.

This was a great cultural experience which will be forever etched into our minds.

Thank you Ketut and your extended family for such a pleasant stay and for welcoming us with open arms.
