The space

Experience authentic, Balinese life. The Payogan Homestay is located within our traditional, Balinese family compound, a 20 minute walk away from Ubud. The room is spacious, with a clean and contemporary style, a beautiful space complemented with Balinese accents. You will wake up to the traditional sounds of Bali and experience the essence of staying in a Balinese village. This listing is for the upstairs room.

The space includes a large bedroom, an attached living space, a large balcony, and a private bathroom. There is a small cooking station on the main floor. Should you wish to stay for a longer period, we can provide a stove and other cooking equipment. The open-air bathroom includes a shower with hot water only a turn-of-a-tap away.

Living in a Balinese family compound means that you will have many friendly, neighbors. The compound is home to a large extended family, all of whom are very involved in traditional Balinese life, and committed to our village ceremonies. Many of these ceremonies also take place in the family temple which is in the middle of the compound. We welcome you to participate if you choose. In fact, we encourage our guests to join us to get the true feeling of Balinese culture. We can always help you through the experience and provide the traditional wear. We can also introduce you to some local craftspeople if you're interested in Balinese art and clothing.

As a licensed tour guide by profession, I can provide custom guided tours according to your interests and needs. We also provide airport transfer and local transportation at a very reasonable rate - we are only a call away.

Other highlights:
- Longer stays enjoy a significantly reduced room rate.
- Breakfast and/or other meals can be provided on request for minimal cost.
- We can arrange laundry pick-up and delivery at very reasonable rates.

If there's anything else you need, just ask. We want you to have a memorable stay in Bali with our family.

So lovely to spend our first week in Bali in the blissful, spacious bedroom.! With open windows to a lush garden, and own private patio, it's quite the relaxing nook.** This location is perfect, as it's peaceful & away from the hustle bustle of downtown Ubud (yet still close), and a quick jaunt away on motorbike from jungle back roads to Tagellang rice fields and thorough beautiful villages. Ketut and his family were so helpful and friendly, such sweethearts! A GEM of an Airb&b, we'll definitely be back. Oh, and the banana pancakes in the morning are to die for <3

Ketut Mendra was an amazing host and I'm so happy he was my first impression of Bali! his driver picked me up at the airport and he was always there to recommend places to visit and see, arrange my fast boat to Nusa Lembogan when I left and made the most delicious banana pancakes with shaved coconut each morning. the room was stunning and perfect. I used the balcony each morning for some simple yoga postures and each night to write. Ketut also ordered me the most delicious local vegetarian food when I was too tired to walk after travel or sightseeing. I will definitely recommend that anyone coming to Bali stay with him and his wonderful family.

I had a great 1st time experience in Bali, and a lot of it had to do with my choice of staying here with Ketut and his family. Ketut accommodated my needs, including having some shopping items delivered to my final hotel in Sanur (I made a side trip outside of Bali). The photos and other reviews of the room are spot on, so I have nothing to add. Payogan is located outside of central Ubud. Walking downhill into town is not so bad, and you can detour onto a trail through the rice paddies. Along the way, there are some of Ubud's best restaurants and warungs, Bintang Supermarket, and the Neka Art Museum. Coming back up at the end of the day, you'll probably want to hire a taxi for 50k IDR, especially after dark. Also, you will not regret arranging day tours with Ketut, his other family business.

Ketut is a wonderful and welcoming host! My partner and I stayed here for two nights and loved it, the upstairs accommodation is just stunning and we thoroughly enjoyed coming home after dinner and taking in the night on the large balcony. We chose to stay here because we didn't want to be right in the centre of Ubud and it is only a 20 minute walk into town so it was perfect for us or a cheap taxi ride away. Ketut helped us organise a tour in our second day also. Overall lovely accommodation and a really good breakfast too. I would definitely stay here again!

We hate that we must write a review because that means our stay has come to an end. My wife and I had no idea what was in store for us when we chose to book our stay in the Payogan Village homestay with Ketut Mendra. Ketut has become so much more than just a host, but a lifelong friend and family member. Ketut accepted us into his home and treated us as though he'd known us our entire lives. In our short time together, Ketut shed pearls of wisdom, lots of laughter, the best food recommendations one could ask for, and most importantly, love! I will certainly miss Ketut and his amazing family. And of course this same love is shown in the way he keeps the homes-away-from-home clean and tidy. Be mindful however, you are in the middle if the forest. Expect critters (geckos, ants, spiders, preying manti!) Oh and the roosters are loud and the dogs do bark. But as the local saying goes, "That's Bali!". Ketut upgraded my wife and I to his villa due to someone else booking a longer stay. We too ended up booking an extra two nights. Oh! The breakfast is astounding! Ketut's wife can THROW DOWN! You definitely want the breakfast. Also, Ketut's homestay is a one stop shop. If you need a driver, Ketut has you handled. Either him, his son, or his nephew will provide transport and will give you a tour. Ketut's wife will also handle your laundry. If you can't tell by now, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you stay here. You will only be rewarding yourself. The homestay is about a 5-10 minute drive or motorbike ride from the heart of Ubud, about a 45 minute walk. If you plan to walk it can be a good excercise. But be warned: don't walk through the village at night. It's pretty dark and the neighboring home guard dogs DON'T PLAY! LOL! But seriously... Ketut, thank you so much! Whenever we return, we will be here! And you and yours will always have a place to stay if you come to America!!!

The room is really very beautiful and spacious. It is open (so bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper) and so it is cool all day and night and I didn't really use the fan. It is a good space to relax and work. I highly recommend breakfast at Ketut's - fresh fruit, omelettes and banana pancakes. The house is about a 30 minute walk from the edge of Ubud, a little longer if you go further into town. I walked a few times but you can also get a motorbike or cab ride very cheap, which is a good idea when it is dark. It was nice to be outside of Ubud as it was quieter and more relaxing. There is also a beautiful walk you can do which leads you from Payogan to Ubud and back - the Campuhan Ridge Walk.
