The Space

Experience authentic, Balinese life. The Payogan Homestay is located within our traditional, Balinese family compound, a 20 minute walk away from Ubud. The room is spacious, with a clean and contemporary style, a beautiful space complemented with Balinese accents. You will wake up to the traditional sounds of Bali and experience the essence of staying in a Balinese village. This listing is for the upstairs room.

The space includes a large bedroom, an attached living space, a large balcony, and a private bathroom. There (email hidden) station on the main floor. Should you wish to stay for a longer period, we can provide a stove and other cooking equipment. The open-air bathroom includes a shower with hot water only a turn-of-a-tap away.

Living in a Balinese family compound means that you will have many friendly, neighbors. The compound is home to a large extended family, all of whom are very involved in traditional Balinese life, and committed to our village ceremonies. Many of these ceremonies also take place in the family temple which is in the middle of the compound. We welcome you to participate if you choose. In fact, we encourage our guests to join us to get the true feeling of Balinese culture. We can always help you through the experience and provide the traditional wear. We can also introduce you to some local craftspeople if you're interested in Balinese art and clothing.

As a licensed tour guide by profession, I can provide custom guided tours according to your interests and needs. We also provide airport transfer and local transportation at a very reasonable rate - we are only a call away.

Other highlights:
- Longer stays enjoy a significantly reduced room rate.
- Breakfast and/or other meals can be provided on request for minimal cost.
- We can arrange laundry pick-up and delivery at very reasonable rates.

If there's anything else you need, just ask. We want you to have a memorable stay in Bali with our family.

  • We enjoyed every second in Payogan homestay. The host Ketut was very reliable and honest about everything. The compound, the family, the room and the atmosphere is REAL Bali and leave us with it all inside.

Ketut was nearby most of the time. He could answer all our questions about places, history, habits, religion etc. And he did it during good conversations.
We were picked up by Ketut and his son Made, both very good drivers. We enjoyed the hole day trip with Ketut, where he showed us real Bali. He was aware that we liked to avoid the most touristic places, and did in a respectful way.
All the communication before and after our stay was perfect.
He gave us a lot of useful informations about restaurants, walking in the ricefields, museums etc. The location is very good because you are away from busy parts of Ubud, but you are in walkingdistance with a lot of it ( good local restaurants and ricefieldwalks)
Ketut showed us all the rooms in Payogan homestay and they were all very charming, wellfurnished and very clean. Even the smallest problems were taken care of.
We will not tell anything about the pancakes ! The only thing to say is : travel to Bali and try them !

  • I would highly recommend to stay at this place. Ketut is the best host I could have wished for! The homestay was very clean, well-equipped. Ketut is a lovely host and always available to provide advice on where to go and what to see. He made me feel very welcome in Bali. I would love to come back there, anytime! Thanks a lot for giving me a great time.

  • Convenient location, hospitable hosts, clean and really comfortable accommodation. Ketut and family helped make arrangements for all our tours and transport needs in Bali. We had a fantastic stay and would be happy to come back again. :)

  • I stayed in Ketut's homestay for 2 days, and I honestly wish I stayed longer. Staying in Payogan village with his family is the perfect complement to the quintessential Bali experience. The upstairs room was clean, spacious, airy, and true to the posted pictures. Although there was no airconditioning, I found it unnecessary since it was surprisingly breezy and comfortable at any time of the day. There was also wifi connection in the room, which is definitely a plus. More importantly, Ketut and his family were very easy to get along with. Even before arriving in Bali, I have corresponded with Ketut regarding airport transfers, making reservations for activities, etc., and his assistance made our trip and stay as smooth as possible. His nephew (also named Ketut) served as an excellent tour guide around Ubud and nearby sites. He provided us with a very comfortable, airconditioned ride, which we greatly appreciated. Staying in Payogan village was one of the best decisions of the entire trip, and I, given the opportunity, would stay there again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Ketut and your lovely family! :)

  • My other and I stayed with Ketut in April and loved every minute of it. The accommodation was beyond beautiful and the location was awesome. You must try his breakfast. He was so kind to arrange transportation to/from the airport. He also knows all the best sights to see. Everyone at the homestay is very sweet. Would go back in a heartbeat!

  • I ended up extending my stay in Bali because of the warm hospitality from Ketut and his family. From the moment I arrived, Ketut said that I was now a part of his family and he felt a level of responsibility for my safety and overall enjoyment of Bali. We had some nice chats and a walk in the garden together. He also invited me to his village temple for the Nyepi celebrations which was a real treat. I will miss Ketut's genuine happy smile and enthusiasm to share true Balinese culture. Thank you for making me feel welcome.

I stayed in two different rentals. Both were clean and accurate from the pictures. Be prepared to see lizards, ants, and other bugs. You do hear chickens in the morning, so it might be tough if you like to sleep in. It is a long walk to Ubud center with the heat and traffic, but transport can easily be arranged by Ketut. Other guests are a more mature, respectful friendly international crowd inhabiting studios/rooms/villa which make up the compound.

  • We stayed for ten days with Ketut and his family at Payogan Homestay.
The whole experience was perfect. The room is incredibly beautiful, huge, luminous and the nature surrounding the area is amazing. Ketut is a wonderful host, always helpful and smiling.
We are really happy we met him and his family and we cannot wait to go back to Payogan!

  • Ketut honestly is an authentic Balinese experience with family life. Ketut family make every effort to help you and make your time happy.
All the accommodation are very nice, very clean and comfortable.
It is easy to take a cab or bike to the centre Ubud and close walking to nice cafe. It's great for families with other kids there to play with.
I didn't have any mosquitos at all which I was surprised!
The only other thing to mention is if u are a light sleeper there is many roosters crowing from about 5 am til 7am.
I would definitely recommend you to stay here!!

  • Ketut is a great host, warm and welcoming into his family home. The room is lovely with a nice design, great outdoor seating area and comfortable beds. The only thing missing (email hidden) over the beds. Unfortunately I couldn't get a good night's rest due to being bitten all night with the open room design of no walls which I found lovely for the cool breeze with the ceiling fan but torture without the netting. Breakfast was wonderful with fresh fruit, scrambled eggs and some of the best homemade bread (thick slices of whole wheat)!

  • I have just come home after staying a whole month at the Payogan Homestay and everything was absolutely fantastic!!! From the moment I was picked up by Ketut's son Made at the airport till the last sad farewell. The room is beautiful, large, clean. Large sliding windows open up so you can actually live outside with green all around.
No mosquito's! There is a ceiling fan, but it never gets really hot upstairs because of a nice breeze.
Living in a homestay is the best way to get a feel of the real Balinese life. The large extended family that live in the compound are all very friendly. Ketut, his wife Wayan and their sons Wayan and Made are all very helpful, always smiling and in for a chat. Breakfast is good: omelet, fruit salad and toast. Tea and coffee always available. Ketut is a great tour guide and can take you around knowing everything about the culture and history of Bali. Ketut's niece (also called Ketut) gives good massages in your room. His sister-in-law, Wayan, is a good tailor who made two dresses for me with batik material bought in the little store next to the entrance of the homestay. I have seen all the other accomodations that Ketut has on airbnb and they all look great. The garden of the homestay is very well looked after full of exotic plants. There are chickens, roosters, chicks and skinny cats walking around, but they don't bother you. During my stay there was a ceremony in the family temple on the compound. The temple was all decorated, the whole family was preparing offerings and food for days and on the day itself all were dressed in their most beautiful sarong and kabaya. We were invited to join in the ceremony. The old dog Joe is very cute and loves a little attention (and some dog biscuits...) During the week I went to the Cinta Bahasa school to learn Indonesian and the school is only a 20 minute walk away. Ketut or Made can take you in the car or on the motorbike into the center of Ubud. All in all it was a magical experience and I bet Payogan Homestay is the BEST in all of Bali!!
I am coming back FOR SURE!!! Ketut, Wayan, Wayan, Made, Indra and Joe: I miss you all already.
