About this listing
Bella Green is a beautiful 2 bedroom/2bath eco-sensitive hilltop B&B/Spa that caters to couples looking for a quiet getaway, friends wanting to reconnect & solo journeyers. The $135/night is for the Fleur Room and private bathroom with shower only.
The space
Located on Runaway Hill, Bella Green is a compound on 9.75 acres in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, where weather temperatures average between 60-85 degrees. Here you'll find an eclectic compound of independent buildings: the Bella Green Guest house, the spa room-library-exercise area-art studio, the soon-to-be added tiny houses and your host's eco-friendly main home.
Guests are welcome to enjoy the outdoor fire pit area with two comfy lounge chairs and two upright chairs w/footstools (that bounce/rock), the large screen-porch area with love seat on one side and a rocking chair plus bench on the other side (shared by guests and a part of the guest house rental) an outside raised deck overlooking the view with two more lounge chairs and breakfast table, and the independent library/spa area with free "shake" exercise machine, Keurig coffee bar and mini health library. Inclement weather does occasionally happen (just a few days out of the year) and we are happy to open the art studio/exercise studio as an alternative space to relax and in this case, we serve breakfast inside our home rather than al fresco on the porch.
Also there are plenty of street hills to walk, a "secret path" on the property to explore, and yoga mats that you are welcome to borrow and use on either of the outdoor decks. The art room has a rowing machine, ballet bar, and some hand weights, should you request to use them (no extra fee).
Guest access
~ Choosing to be eco-sensitive, we use only Comphey (TM) sheets in both the Spa and guest bedrooms, organic bamboo mattress pads, on-demand hot water heaters, bamboo flooring in guesthouse, low-E windows (with screens to allow a cross breeze if desired), ceiling fans (in the screened porch and each room), and independent self-adjusting AC/heaters.
~ In the screened porch area, there is a mini-fridge, a coffee/tea bar with assorted coffees (but bring your own blend if you'd like!). Fresh filtered water that has been pH balanced and milk (or mylk) for coffee are available upon request.
~ Our guests tell us the rooms feel very European - not too large, tastefully decorated with warm colors, and with queen size beds that sleep very, very well. Everyone appreciates the ability to fully adjust the room temperature to his or her liking and as we know it's sometimes difficult to be out of touch, so we have free wifi anywhere on the property.
~ The large screen porch area on the front of the guesthouse overlooks the view and runs the length of the building, so one can cuddle up on the loveseat, look out at the views from the rocking chair, or enjoy the wifi from the extra-long (four person) desk area that overlooks the view.
~ Guests also have access to the outside fire pit area under the trees (with plenty of firewood), the deck on the house under the trees where breakfast is served al fresco (weather permitting), as well as a second deck.
~ The library area with cozy sitting area for guests, contains a full body "shake" exercise machine, mini-wellness library, and an infra-red sauna. Massages and use of the sauna are by appointment only.
~ The cedar infrared sauna ($35 for single/$45 for 2 guests) is a great way to relax or detox, and it comes with a self-serve aromatherapy scrub for after the sweat. Subsequent sessions during your stay are $10 each (or $15 with scrub). Your host Karen has been a licensed massage therapist for over twenty years. Please arrange in advance, as massages are available on a limited basis. The cost is $70/hour.
~ Just outside our front gate is a "Little Free Library" box where you can take a book if you like.
NOTE: The hot tub is no longer an amenity here, though some reviews may comment about it.
Interaction with guests
As hosts, we try to be available to greet guests upon arrival, provide a brief property tour, share the book we've created about restaurants and what is fun to do locally, and answer whatever questions you may have. We then leave you alone to enjoy your special time together.
We enjoy getting know our guests and may sit with you in the mornings at breakfast time (when invited) or join you in a glass of tea or wine at sunset on the deck if asked. Otherwise, we will leave you to your time together.
We live on the property in a separate building attached to the guesthouse only by a deck should you need us.
The neighborhood
We are a 16 minutes drive from Boerne, Bandera and Helotes, Texas (a trifecta of fun towns to visit!)
Boerne is known for their quaint shops, cute river walk (with friendly ducks), casual and fine dining options, antique stores, art galleries, wine shops and more!
Bandera is the "Cowboy Capital of the World" and here you can find casual cowboy/cowgirl fun including live music & Country Western dancing!
Helotes is home to the historical music venue: John T. Floores Country and just down the street from Gray Moss Inn (considered the most romantic restaurant in San Antonio).
Getting around
You will want a car or motorcycle to explore. There are many scenic routes to choose from should you want to explore the hills. Horesback riding and cave exploration are also fun activities not too far away...
Other things to note
Take time to explore our sister cities, the greater hill country area, or simply stay put and make it a STAY-cation as a writer's retreat, silent personal retreat (with or without spa added) or to get familiar with the concept of living tiny, if you think you might want to do that. We feel it is very healthy to stay "tucked in", enjoying the spa services, the hills, the natural beauty, the peace and quiet, and of course, daily sunsets!
If you ask in advance, we may be able pick up a tasty dinner meal for you from one of our local restaurants (guest is responsible for the cost of the meal plus a 20% re-plating/service fee for picking it up). But PLEASE request this prior to the time of your reservation if you want this as we frequently are available to do this, but not always....
Those staying three days or more, you may choose to add in an evening dinner plan option for $12 per day - which includes and evening dinner entree of your choice (options to be sent upon request) plus daily dessert and/or our a simple lunch option (PBJ, grilled cheese, hummus, avocado, egg or chicken salad sandwich with raw fruit or veggies) for $6 per day.
Artisan "al fresco' (outdoors on the patio) breakfasts are included in the price of our guest house stays. Tiny house guest stays come with a simpler (yet equally tasty and home-made) continental breakfast. If tiny house guests would prefer the al fresco option, we are happy to do this for an extra $10 pp and advance request is required please.
Check in is anytime after 3:00 pm and we encourage you to get here before sunset (as that is an event in and of itself!) Check out time is Noon for the guesthouse and 11am for the Tiny Houses. Please note that if your GPS routes you to Bella Green via a road called Bailey Circle, this is perfectly fine...keep going! If it tries to route you via Bump Gate road, do not take that route!!! The road that used to link to our property in this direction is no longer open. We are happy to send a map for navigating our hill if you'd like that, but usually GPS does a fine job.
Some people have requested TOTAL guesthouse privacy (not wanting to share the screen porch area). We are happy to accommodate when we can, for an extra $75. If you are interested in this option, please request this with your initial reservation.
Try to arrive before sunset (just because this is so pretty here!) Also note that most GPS systems work great getting you here but if it takes you via Bump Gate road - you need to call. If GPS tells you that you are on Bailey Circle after turning on Timbercreek, that is perfectly fine as it becomes Timbercreek again. Check in is anytime after 2pm; checkout is 11am.
DO know that no outside guests are allowed. This helps to keep it the quiet, private, sanctuary-type stay that we all enjoy.
DO limit your smoking to outdoors only. We try to keep life toxin-free.
DO enjoy the fire pit area, but please do not leave it unattended because fire is our only natural enemy here. You are welcome to sit outside as long as you like!
DO feel free to take advantage of our on-site spa services to enhance your experience. As availability allows, guests may opt for a stress-relieving massage ($70/hr) or an infra-red detox Sauna for 1 or 2 ($35 for 1, $45 for 2) which comes with aromatherapy scrub to be used afterwards. The Hot tub is currently reserved for those who opt for a full retreat package (email us for details). The full body vibration "shake" machine and the wellness library in the spa area are free to use! Life coaching comes as a part of the retreat package, or it is available for $50/hr or 3 hours (typically broken into 1.5 hour segments) for $120. Karen is a licensed massage therapist and a certified wellness practitioner with over 25 years of experience. Michael is a writer, college English professor, and has a Master's in Creative Writing. Coaching by one or both is available as needed.
FINAL NOTE: Any items left on property will be held for one week and, if not claimed, will be donated to a local charity or discarded. We are happy to mail anything you forget - just let us know.

"Doing absolutely nothing except enjoying the breeze, the views, the sights and sounds of nature, which is an event worthy of anyone's time and something we encourage all our guests to do! The screened porch is a favorite place for our guests, especially at night. It keeps the bugs (we have few) out while allowing them to FEEL the outdoors. Also, we are WiFi connected so they can still check in with work, or loved ones, as needed."
Mike is a fiction writer and a southern gentleman who loves rescue dogs, gardening, vegetarian eating, music of all kinds (he plays guitar and the Chapman Stick) , and contacting almost 40 years worth of friends worldwide with amateur radio. Karen is a "people-person" originally from the Chicago area who has found that living simply - amidst nature and away from the maddening crowd - a true delight! She loves meeting new people, has healing hands (i.e., she is also a licensed massage therapist who gives an awesome massage), loves being creative, whether in her cooking, sculpting, crafting, exercising, painting or coaching. Our breakfasts, while not yet legendary, are pretty darn nice!
