Description

The space

The House:
Our spacious two-story victorian is perfect for 1-2 people looking to enjoy Santa Cruz. The house has vaulted ceilings with tall windows that create a bright, airy feel throughout the entire house. Although it has the charm of victorian styling, the house has been updated with fresh paint and flooring in all rooms, and brand-new, modernized bathrooms. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and includes our favorite gem - a fully restored Wedgewood stove! We also have a large sitting room with lots of seating, as well as books, instruments, and records to enjoy, If you like the outdoors, we also have two furnished patios to take in the morning and afternoon sun and check out our burgeoning rose, gerbera daisy, herb, vegetable, and succulent gardens (SEE the ORANGE BUCKET in "Other Things of Note"). Laundry is available on the premises, but is coin-operated. We also recycle, compost, and use green soaps and cleaning products whenever possible (however you may use of course use your own products).

Your Room:
The main bedroom up for grabs is located on the second floor and contains a dresser, desk, armchair and vanity for convenience and privacy. See the pictures for the best idea of how awesome this room is :) Things to note: the bathroom is on the first floor, and there are two rooms available - we will communicate with you about which is available when you send a request.

Occupants:
You will be sharing public spaces, including the bathrooms, with us (John, Kira, two cats), and occasionally additional house-guests, which you will be informed of before the booking is accepted.

Location:
The house is just across the river (~3 min walk) from downtown Santa Cruz in a friendly, well-kept, classy neighborhood of quaint victorians and town-homes. The Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk is also a short 15-minute stroll or 5-minute bike-ride down the river path. There are bus stops, grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, and shopping less than 10 minutes in all directions from our location.

The Hook:
We are really friendly, knowledgeable people who love our home and Santa Cruz. The house is spacious, comfortable, inviting, and clean, and finally, our location allows for a pedestrian, low-impact trip to this unique and exciting town.

Interaction with guests

We live here! But we are also very busy people. We are happy to respect the level of privacy you need and also to chat with you and get to know you when our schedule coincide.

The neighborhood

You will be in the heart of Santa Cruz, California at the top of the Monterey Bay. From here you can enjoy fantastic food, entertainment, and activities quickly and casually.
Remember, when you're on the beach, looking out, your facing South. That's Monterey you see!

Getting around

Bring a bicycle or walk the town.
You don't need a car when you're here. Downtown, the beach, the boardwalk, and the hills & trees are all accessible from our location by foot, bicycle, or public transit. Busses, leaving the downtown station leave for the State Parks, the UC Campus, and local cities like San Jose, Watsonville, and, with connections, Monterey.

Other things to note

¡DROUGHT!
The Santa Cruz, California Water Shortage

Water is 100% local in Santa Cruz.
Water is 100% scarce in Santa Cruz.
We're doing our best to conserve when we can and encourage our guests to do the same.

What are those ORANGE BUCKETS in the shower?

Because we've reduced our landscape watering by close to 98%, we have made attempts to capture excess water from other activities to keep our few remaining plants alive.

ORANGE BUCKETS in/next to the shower are used to catch clear water that is normally drained to the sewer during the beginning, during and end of a shower or bath.
ORANGE BUCKETS can be placed under the tub filler, before bathing, as water is warmed. They can be left in the shower, during bathing, to catch water that escapes through the tub filler and the 'slightly-grey water' that is deflected into the bucket during bathing (please do not spit, urinate, otherwise bathe into the bucket.) And the bucket is used to collect water remaining in the shower pipes after a shower when released by the tub-filler valve that would otherwise slowly leak out.
We empty the buckets each day to use to hand water trees, shrubs, succulents, herbs, and other plants in our garden.
We don't mandate that our guests participate in our water conservation efforts, but invite each of you to participate if you're interested.

We encourage all of our guests to do their best to conserve water during their visit to Santa Cruz and throughout California.

¡DRINK WATER!
All this talk about conservation shouldn't mean that you avoid drinking your healthy share of water throughout the day.

To reduce the consumption of plastic disposable water bottles on our beaches, in our rivers, and in our landfills, we provide clean reusable BPA-free water bottles for our guests to use during their stay with us.
In the event you will keep traveling after you leave us (maybe headed to Yosemite) and need a reusable water bottle, let us know and we are happy to let you take it with you for a nominal fee.

Stay hydrated.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to ask us.

Lovely welcoming hosts. Perfect location for downtown. Nice room and bed, can get cold though. Has blankets. Two friendly cats, especially the ginger one: don't be afraid of him. He's very sweet.

Response from John & Kira:
You are right, this darn old Victorian can get a bit chilly in the winter. I'm glad you donned some extra blankets. We'd love to host you in some more hospital summer weather :) Quark the Ginger Cat says hello!

Welcoming, clean, accurate, and beyond. If you're looking for a place that's close to the beach/boardwalk look no further, this is it! Thanks again John and Kira! You two were the best!

We had a wonderful week-end in Santa Cruz and John&Kira's home was a huge part of that success. It's a lovely house in the center of Santa Cruz. We didn't touch the car for 3 days, and instead walk or bike everywhere. It has the charm of my grandma's house: simple but rich of experiences, grounded, and kind. Hard not to feel at home.

I had a a wonderful stay at John & Kira's home - lovely people. Their place is clean, their kitchen is well stocked, and their location is excellent. - they also like good music. Their beds are also delightful to sleep in - very comfy. They are two very fun people to be around and I strongly recommend you stay here.

Kira was out when we arrived but it was easy to get in and the roommate came home shortly after we arrived. Nice quirky old Santa Cruz house, clean and bright in central location, 5 min walk to downtown. Bath is downstairs from the bedroom and shared by hosts and roommate. House is on a small street though there is just a bit of street noise. Kitchen was easy to use. Laundry machine next to house for fee.
