We loved staying at Sandy's home during our trip to the Big Island! The rooms are lovely, the property is beautiful, and Sandy is fabulous: She was quick to respond regarding any questions, such as alternate routes if needed because of the nearby lava flow and especially when I thought I'd lost the lock combos(!), and provided helpful info about restaurants in the area.
If you're considering staying here, keep two things in mind:
(1) If you are a light sleeper, you may want to bring earplugs; the coqui frogs can be quite loud (we weren't bothered, but others might be).
(2) If you aren't cooking at the house, you will need to plan to where you're stopping for dinner before heading out/heading back. The closest restaurants are in Pahoa--we stopped at Kaloe's and Aloha Lehua's, which were lovely--but some are closed on Mondays or close earlier than East Coasters are used to. Otherwise, you will need to go to Keaau (we stopped at one place on Orchidland Dr and got plate dinners; there is Southern BBQ, but we missed it that night), Hilo (about a 35- to 40-min drive; go to Ken's House of Pancakes for breakfast!) or Volcano (about a 45-min drive).
If you keep these two things in mind, your stay at Sandy's will be perfect!
Mahalo, Sandy, for letting us stay in your home!
