This area is steeped in history from the 1st and 2nd World Wars, there are many local walks where you can explore bunkers and visit monuments. You can visit Slovenia's widest tree in the nearby village of Rut.
You can almost step out of the front door and go walking, fly fishing and mountain biking. Paragliding, canyoning, white water rafting, canoeing and hunting are all possible in the local area.
However you choose to spend your time, you are guaranteed to enjoy the breathtaking scenery, flora and fauna of this beautiful area.
This place is a little off the beaten track. The address provided by airbnb was wrong. Nice place and very friendly, english speaking host.
We really enjoyed our stay at Hisa Brdo Guesthouse. John is a nice and helpful host and gave us good advice for our daily tour to the Triglav National Park. We would recommend it.
We can only confirm the positive reviews of our fellow guests. The house is really tastefully refurbished and fits into the locale style perfectly. It is also easy to find, being right by the road side, although somewhat before the official Grahovo village sign (if you come from Tolmin). Our room was also partly facing the road although this was no problem as there was hardly any traffic anyway. Otherwise you are surrounded by pure nature. We visited the Tolminka gorge and I can recommend this to anybody who likes nature.
John is a very helpful and generous host, giving quality advice. The best thing during our stay was the open fire place. Who needs a TV when you can watch a couple of logs burn...
Would we come back? Absolutely!
Host, John Cusack has done a thorough and tasteful renovation of a country home in the mountains of Slovenia. We stayed three nights and really enjoyed ourselves. On day one we visited the WWI open air museum of trenches in the Soca Valley. Day two we visited Kobarid and the War museum. John directed us to restaurants and was a great resource.
The best part of our visit was our long discussions with John. He's very knowledgable about local history and just thoroughly engaging.
The property is not in the center of town, so driving is necessary, but you'll enjoy your stay.
The house was so beautiful! It's in an amazing place in the mountains, with a great little village nearby (Grahovo). John was a lovely host, and we were taken care of very well.
We can highly recommend Hisa Brdo -- we were very happy there. John has done a wonderful job fitting modern comforts into this ancient house while maintaining its historical charm. John and Sally are very warm and hospitable and gave good suggestions for things to do. We enjoyed getting their expatriate (and native English speaking!) view on the local culture.
And we really enjoyed Tolmin area -- great nature, charming villages, interesting history.
One suggestion to other visitors though -- don't do what we did and drive to Slovenia/Tolmin area for the first time in the dark, with a rainstorm coming down. The twisty drive is part of the fun, but is best enjoyed by daylight.
John and his lovely wife were amazing hosts! Their Slovenian mountain house is restored in an extremely authentic way and it is 5minutes from the nearest village and has exceptional views. The rooms were cosy and the house had all amenities needed for a relaxing holiday.
I warmly recommend to stay at their place if you are planning to discover the beauties of the Julian Alps.
I recommend tasting John's Bosnian breakfast eggs!
