The Space

As you can see from the photos, this home is open air design facing the jungle with a green belt river in back. Upstairs shower has views of lush terraced rice paddies . This top floor suite has a spectacular tree-house feel. You can literally touch the treetops. Beautiful gardens surround our stunning new natural stone swimming pool. Its a hide-away kind of place, for a great escape from city life and a chance to meet Balinese and observe their real way of life away from tourist areas.

All bedrooms have queen size beds with bed net canopy. There are two en-suite bedrooms with private bath. The master suite includes the entire top floor. The second suite is on the ground floor.. Dining room & kitchen are located in the new wing. Both bedroom suites have either a terrace or balcony overlooking the new pool. A "bonus bedroom" we call the Jungle Room is perfect for overflow sleeping. Access is outside in the lower garden. So, kitchen, dining, & living rooms are available for your exclusive use...you are renting the complete property.

For optional $5/day cleaning fee, our staff will clean the house , make the beds, clean up the kitchen, and service the garden and the pool. Only the first 3 days cleaning fee are prepaid upon booking. You just pay for extra service you decide to use when you check-out. Good outside laundry service available at very reasonable local Bali rates.

Our house manager, Kadek, who has a nice car & speaks English well, is available for island tours or basic daily transport. Airport pickup / drop off service ( $25). Local trips cost about $5/hr ( perhaps less when just waiting for you, as you eat in a restaurant or visit a museum, for example). The actual rate depends on distance driven..ie petrol use.

Wireless Wi-Fi available: no problem. When I'm here I work on my computer by tethering to hotspot with a 3g smart phone, The signal is usually excellent because we have a cell tower on our street. I created this listing & other websites this way. We have a hotspot wireless device for guest use that does the same thing.

. Please read our guest reviews ... they give a realistic picture of the Honey Tree Villa experience. Our location is central to everything on Bali ( we are in the geographic center of the island) but you will need some means of transport. We have three multi speed bikes available free for your use. You can rent a car or motor scooter rather cheaply ( we will help you if you want) and drive yourself. The most convenient mode of getting around Bali is to use Kadek's very affordable car & driver/guide service. Its almost as cheap as driving yourself, and much more relaxing.

If you are lucky enough to spend a month or more on Bali, consider using Honey Tree Villa as your home base. Our monthly rate is so affordable, you can go off on overnight trips from time to time, for surfing, scuba, city night life, or whatever adventures your Bali heart desires. :) I do it myself, when I come for two or three months each winter. I like to scuba, for example, so I might go to Amed or Tulamben or Lombok for a few days. After a period of hard play in the sun, its so good to return to the refreshing green oasis of the Honey Tree.

Long stay or short, our staff will help you with any of your needs. Bed linens, towels, kitchen utensils, soap all included in the price. Gardener & pool service included. Every morning the yard is swept clean of leaves that have fallen the night before.
In short... Life is sweet at the Honey Tree ! :)

Guest Access

You are renting the whole property and all its equipment, including 3 multi speed bicycles.BBQ grill. Swimming pool. 3 bedrooms. Whole house and all the grounds.

Interaction with Guests

Guests will have the property to themselves, but staff will be on site morning and evening to provide guest services.

The Neighborhood

Our location in central Bali is a convenient starting point for island touring, instead of fighting traffic for your first hour of touring, as you must do in South Bali, here the beauty of rural bali is all around you from the moment you step outside your door! That's why I bought land here. Its off the beaten tourist path, still authentic rice farming area with stunning terraced rice paddies, green belt jungle, and traditonal village life.

Getting around

Our manager Kadek will meet your flight or come to your hotel to trasport you to Honey Tree for $25. Once here, you can hire Kadek by the hour to tour or shop, use our free bicycles, rent motor bike, or rent self drive car. No public transport in the village. But we can drop you in Ubud at bus terminal if you want.

Other Things to Note

Tourist infrastructure, such as western resturants, do not exist in the village. Stock up your kitchen!!
Expect to drive when you want to eat out. Minimart and indonesian restaurants 10 minutes away. Ubud is 30 minutes away. There you will find thousands of travelers, and hundreds of resturants, shops, and complete tourist facilities of every kind. Bad news. Ubud also has a traffic problem.too much of a good thing. Still fun to visit.

  • Great experience at Honey Tree villa. Although it's a little way out of Ubud, Kadek is hugely helpful both with driving and day trip planning. We loved his family's nasi goreng too!
    Beautiful villa, a real retreat.

  • In short, a great place that I recommend.
    What we liked ...
-- Kadek and family were great hosts! They will help you with anything! But push them to cook spicy food for you -- otherwise you might be eating a lot of Nasi Goreng and chicken satay. When they found out we liked spicy food, it was like their menu choices increased 10-20x. Wonderful!
-- Jack was great in answering all our pre-trip questions.
-- Open concept of the house and the great second floor "bedroom in the treetops" that let's you hear the "night song" of the jungle and a great view upon first waking up.
-- Nice, new pool. Pretty private.
-- Bikes. You should definitely take a few evening bike rides (we liked the route turning left heading out the front gate.)
-- Just an overall cool vibe to the place. Jack needs to add more photos. We particular liked the living room "nook", which looks out onto the jungle.

What we disliked ... Too minor to mention.

What could be changed to improve experience from great to excellent ...
-- A fat cushion for the outside gazebo would be ideal. Cuts down on dragging pillows from inside to outside every day.
-- A couple of lounge chairs for the front lawn and a couple of chairs for the upstairs balcony, which would be great to sit on and view the wealth of stars.
-- Lighting is typical bright white florescent that you see in a lot of Asia. We live in Shanghai so are used to this, but would be good to see some soft white lights installed overhead. Otherwise, just go out and grab some candles. That's what we did and it made a huge difference. You can get them at the supermarket that Kadek will take you to.
-- A fridge full of free beer and ... ;)

What you need to be aware of, but is not within Jack's control ...
-- You are among farm fields and farmers. So make sure this is what you are looking for. Beautiful views of rice terraces also come with the occasional gust of smoke (from burning rice fields), which is typical in many parts of Indonesia.

-- There is a small gaggle of ducks and chickens next door. I think this would be especially great for young kids (assuming the neighbor doesn't mind) but "city folk" might not like being woken up at 5am by the rooster. My wife and I are early risers so it was better than an alarm clock!!

-- Lots of mosquitos in the Ubud area, so load up on bug repellant and citronella (get what you think you need, then double it). Both are sold at the Bintang supermarket in Ubud that should be your first stop when stocking up on supplies for your stay. If you do that, they'll (mostly) leave you alone.

-- It's about 20 minutes from Ubud by car

Thanks Jack! See you next year!

  • Honey Tree Villa is awesome place. It is even more beautiful than on pictures. Bedroom on the first floor is so nice, after waking up and getting out from bed you go directly to wonderful terrace. In front of the house you can find pool. Territory around the house is quite big and also very clean and green. Venue is located in quiet and green village, so it is not in the center of touristic life.
Also I want to thank Kadek, house manager of the villa. He is really nice and friendly person. He drew us a few times to different interesting places, he met us in airport and was very helpful in any question.
As an owner Jack is very responsive and helpful, seems like he takes good care of visitors needs.

  • Honey tree villa is set in the middle of the forest near sangeh. I was surprised to know that my friend and I were the first Indonesian guest that have stayed there. The villa is located within a forest like environment and It was very quiet. It is a perfect spot if you want to escape the the busy city life and the crowded tourists area in bali. The design of the villa was "open air" and at night you can hear a lot of crickets singing you to sleep. Bli Kadek was very kind and helpful during our stay. The place is pretty far from denpasar and kuta (more than 1 hour drive) but since we did not want to go there it was fine. Thank You Jack and Bli Kadek for letting us stay at Honey Tree Villa. It was a pleasant experience for us both!

  • Honey Tree is simply a gorgeous property, even more beautiful than the pictures. It's spacious, perfectly designed, and incredibly well constructed.

Jack and his house manager Kadek could not have been nicer or more responsive. Both were eager to help us with any issue and quick to respond to our questions. Kadek even invited us to a family ceremony, which was the highlight of our week.

If you're considering a stay at Honey Tree, it's important to understand its unique location. If you're looking for a quite, true Bali getaway, with long walks in the rice fields and quiet wanders through local villages, this is your place. There's no hint of tourism in this little corner of central Bali.

If you're hoping to go out to restaurants and activities, you should be aware that the villa is some distance from Ubud and other attractions, and that there is no public transport (or any shops or restaurants) within easy walking distance. You'll need to have either your own car, or a working phone so you can call Kadek for a ride.

One of the great things about Honeytree is that it's completely open to the environment, so that it feels fresh and cool in any weather. At night the nature sounds are delightful. This also means lots of creature encounters, so if you're looking for a sealed, bug-free environment this is not the right fit for you.

Staying at Honeytree was a truly unique experience, and we thank Jack and Kadek for their kindness and generosity.

  • Jack is a very friendly und caring host - thanks for this. His Honey Bee Villa - a special secret on Bali - lies very hidden from any tourist hype. For people who want to go out for eating or just having a coffee spontaneously or need flower: consider that this is almost impossible unless you have a car or a motorbike or ask this great and always helpful and friendly man on your side Kadek to drop you and pick you up later. The house itself offers much space inside and outside the secret of jungle very close. Behind this wonderful green rice fields expand. you may walk or ride with Jack's bicycle to the next village. I experienced this stay as a challenge during rain season. So I had plenty of time for thinking, meditating, writing, reading, relaxing. Ubud is a nice and vivid town - visit obligatory the museums! - and take time for the market! Jack, thank you very much going through Bali from your perspective!

  • Depending on the type of break that you're looking for this will either be a little slice of paradise or a little too remote. We loved it. Staying in the middle of the jungle was great, the house was lovely and we were very well looked after by Kadek and his family. We hired scooters and ride up to the crater lakes in the north of the island and into Ubud a couple of times (which is about 40 minutes away).

  • The experience at Honey Tree Villa becomes as memorable as any other component of one's holiday in Bali. Kadek, a local Indonesian man, acts as the caretaker, driver and all-purpose guide to Ubud. It's a real pleasure to get to know Kadek and we were lucky enough to experience one of his family's Hindu ceremonies. Putu is an amazing chef who is available to make meals for guests. He was there every morning to make breakfast for us. Last, but not least, there's Jack C (or something like that), the dog with "good Karma," who found her own way to the Honey Tree Villa, and has been receiving love from all the guests who pass through. The Villa is an enjoyable 30 minute drive from central Ubud and is situated amongst rice fields and small villages. It is also situated near the starting point for an number of "eco tourism" adventures - trekking, bicycling, rafting, or the elephant sanctuary. Kadek provides numerous suggestions for daily activities and is able to make all the arrangements. Because of the quiet location and enclosed yard, security was never a concern.

For something closer to the real Bali or Indonesia, we would highly recommend Ubud and its surrounds, and Honey Tree Villa as surely one of the best places to spend your holiday at, even if it's just a place to lay your head each night.

  • A lovely place, situated in a small village right at the edge of a beautiful forest. The service is outstanding with Kadek: guide, housekeeper and driver. And Putu the cook who served wonderful sushi and chicken curry- delicious. Upstairs there are no windows, so you get direct access to the forest live and a feeling of being a bit part of it.
