Located 45 minutes south of Hilo in the Puna district (we also call ourselves "punatreehouse") Hale ‘Ohai is an elegant sanctuary, a place to rest and reflect, a place to gather for special occasions, a place from which to explore and discover The Big Island of Hawaii. Please take loving care of Hale 'Ohai - we are delighted to share our home with you, and will be delighted if you leave it as you found it, with no new scratches to the counters and floors, no new water marks on the furniture, and so on. Our housekeepers have asked you to take particular note to remove sand and lava rock from towels, bags, and your own body (just use the outside shower before entering the house) so as to protect the floors and furniture from scratches and other damage, and likewise always to use a coaster when placing cups and glasses on furniture. Of course, we understand that accidents happen. If something at the house is damaged, broken, or permanently stained during your stay, please let us know. As we get to the house ourselves only a few times a year, we need the feedback so that we can replace items and arrange for repairs when needed.
Also, please take loving care of our neighbors. As Hale 'Ohai is a screen house, and as sound travels through screens, please be mindful that your conversations, unless spoken quietly, and your music will carry across the lawn and through the jungle.
Let us know if you have any questions, comments or concerns before, during or after your stay.
What a peaceful and unique treat to stay at Hale 'Ohai! We spent wonderful 3 nights at Paul and Mike's place. If you like simple and clean Scandinavian design with a love for nature and the sun, you are going to love this place! We arrived quite late on a rainy night, Juan, the property manager, greeted us in person with a very warm alohoa. He walked us through the house, answered all of our questions very patiently and made some great suggestions on places to see. We felt very welcomed and respected. The house is exceptionally clean! Beds are very comfy and stay quite dry even though it rains sometimes. The screens on the second floor make you feel like you are inside a tree house. With natural light coming in, it is amazing just to sit on the wood floor, relax and listen to the nature. My mom especially enjoyed mediating on the floor. Hale O'hai is about 40 min drive south of the Hilo airport. Nearby are some tide pools which are great for snorkeling. A black sand beach is also located very close by. We really enjoyed the outdoor shower and the visits from the geckos! The kitchen is wonderfully equipped! There is also a Vitamix blender if you like to blend freshly picked fruits for breakfast. We had a wonderful time staying at Hale O'hai! Thank you so much, Paul and Mike, for opening your heart and sharing such a special place with us! Will definitely come back!
The Monkeypod was great! We stayed there for a large portion of our honeymoon, and although it's remote (25 minute-ish drive to the nearest town), we felt like we really got to know the true Hawaiian neighborhood by staying there. At the time we stayed there, Paul and Mike had outsourced their vacation guest management to a third party company, and their representative was great! He met us at the house and showed us everything we needed to know. Lots of critters, but makes sense since we were in the jungle! :) The geckos were our favorite.
This house is amazing! It is just as described, yet even better than the pictures. It is truly an architectural gem! If you are looking for somewhere unique, this is it! We had a great experience. The sounds of the coqui didn't bother us as we thought of it as a soundtrack of the rainforest. It was pretty loud though. Also, the trees and flowers in the yard are pretty wonderful. Orchids! Hibiscus! 100 year old banyan trees! Fruit trees! All in the yard!!! Just to note, there are two showers and both outdoors. One had a curtain and one does not! Either way, it was fine though. We had plenty of hot water and the showers so it was very comfortable even though we were outside. Also, it was a very nice touch that there was a fine selection of coffee and tea available! Finally, it did get a little chilly at night. We were plenty warm in the bedrooms. However it was noticeably cooler in the upstairs area bc of all the screens. It was not a problem, just something to be prepared for! And, make sure to bring a flashlight if there's any possibility you'll arrive after dark. Oh! And if the guy at your rental car company tells you you'll be driving on dirt roads to get to Pahoa, it's not true at all!!! It is paved the whole way.
Very cool and unique place to stay! Everything is as described and communication was great. For the cost of a lower end (big island) hotel room we stayed at this awesome house. Would definately stay there again.
This house is incredible - we couldn't stop appreciating how innovative it was the whole time we were there. The pictures did not do it justice - the space is large and airy. Any questions we had were addressed fast and efficiently. The evening sounds through the screens were louder but easy to get used to for us - frankly, we missed it when we arrived home! Access to a vehicle would be a must for exploration of this side of the island. Very thankful Paul and Mike opened their home to us.
This was the 3rd time that I stayed at Paul and Mike's home. I'm totally in love with the home and the area. The home is stocked with anything you could possibly need. I wouldn't stay anywhere else. Keep up the good work.
Paul and Mikes Hale 'Ohai: Monkey Pod Tree House is simply Stunning! They were amazing hosts, easy and quick to communicate with, and left us with very detailed directions and instructions about the house that really made the stay a dream. The house was so beautiful, we actually stayed there for 2 straight days without wanting to leave the property. We had been on the island for 2 weeks, visiting from NYC, and did not really unwind until we set foot in this house. It is a very peaceful sanctuary, and we will be staying here on all of our future trips back to Hawaii.
Thank You so much,
Jeremy & Santiago
