- Walk or bicycle your way around Hilo town or use the County discounted taxi fare program (4 mile radius). Our quaint town has the most "Old Hawaii" feel than any other city in the state. There are Farmer's Markets, downtown Hilo, Queen Liliuokalani Park, Coconut Island, Rainbow Falls, museums to visit within the 4 miles radius of the city. Lots to see here.

- Sign up for group tours (Mauna Kea Observatory, Waipio Valley, Lava Hiking, Kilauea Volcano, Hot Ponds, Ziplines). Request for a home pick up and return, We are about 2 miles from hotel row, so most tour companies WILL usually do this.

- Take the $2 dollar buses to Kailua-Kona , resorts and hotels on the west side.

You will need a few days on the Hilo side to truly appreciate the beauty and charm of our little town. Don't mind the unpredictable rain... you are in the rain forest anyway.

I wasn't a huge fan of this place, the bed was super uncomfortable, there was a sign saying you're on camera.... and a hotel tax was expected on top of the cost of the stay. The area was so loud hardly got any sleep, a dog was constantly barking and it sounded like someone was in our room rummaging all night because of how thin the walls were.

Cynthia was a really nice hostess. My daughter and I stayed at her house for 3 weeks and she helped us to stay comfortably in many ways. She gave us a ride several times and brought us to a farmers' market and shops. She even lent us her cellphone when it was necessary. She cooked great Filipino food for us a few times. We enjoyed chatting, cooking together, and going grocery shopping. My two -year-old daughter keeps saying, "Can we go back to Cynthia's house." "I wanna go to Cynthia's house." and "I wanna see the kitty at Cynthia." My friends and I have already started planning to stay at her place for the next vacation on Hawaii Island.

My sister, niece, and I had an evening flight to Hilo from Honolulu, and Cynthia was there to greet us even though it was several hours later than her normal check-in time. We stayed in the family room, which has its own private bedroom, and is very spacious. Cynthia is a wonderful host. I stayed here two years ago, and the fact that I returned with members of my family should let everyone know how highly I think of Cynthia. She is very warm and personable and is always willing to recommend things to see and do in the area, places to eat, etc.

Cynthia started with extremely warm reception for our arrival, making me think at that moment that I had met the best host among the 4 hosts I stayed with during the trip. However, she changed her attitude when I followed the instructions to use the washer. The instruction said to use the washer before 9:30pm, so we used it during the day time. When I first tried to use it at around 10:30am, there was a washing session going, so we went out for brunch and returned for a 2nd try. This time, another load was running, so we waited till the session was completely done before doing ours. Then Cynthia saw me using the washer and started complaining that she had a business to run and I wouldn't let her do her business. She repeated about 3 times that she would re-consider letting guests use her washer. I told her I wasn't trying to upset her and if the instruction had said that I couldn't use it, I would have followed, but the instruction said to use it before 9:30pm. How would I have known and done better?! And I would have totally respected her business time if she had not reprimanded me like that. She eventually let me use the washer, and I felt extremely awkward not sure when she would be upset about another thing without warning. I have been and will continue to be a good guest who respects others and follow instructions as best as I could, but this experience made me stress out a bit at the place where I should get rest and relax. This is the biggest bummer about this place. Still, here are some facts about the room for your reference. Pros: 1. The location was great, very close to the airport and major high ways. 2. The room was spacious, so was the common area. 3. You could cook in the kitchen. 4. There's a sheet of attractions and local restaurants to try out - We found them helpful. Cons: 1. The bed sags and makes loud noises when you climb in or out or make a move. We didn't sleep so well for this reason. 2. The comforter was by request and not offered by default as in other Airbnb places I stayed on the same island. It was very cold when we stayed at this place and we only had 1 thin sheet of cloth (not even a blanket) to cover. 3. The wall was very thin so you can hear the activities in another room, but thankfully everybody was quiet at night so it wasn't too much a problem. 4. 6 people share 1 bathroom unless you have an emergency. The toilet and the shower are in the same bathroom, so if anyone uses either the toilet or the shower, the other people can't do anything in parallel.

Response from Cynthia:
In short, this guest is still upset that I told her to re-schedule her wash, as I was in the middle of 3 loads of laundry of sheets and towels. This was Christmas that she stayed with us for 4 nights, so she saw that we were kind of busy with the change of guests. Most guests would ask me what is a good time for them to use the washer. But she just dumped my newly washed sheet on top of the dryer, not even in the dryer, of course I got upset, as I thought it was quite rude. As far as the bed comforter, we have a cotton quilt on each bed, not a flimsy sheet that she claimed it had. When she mentioned the following morning it was quite cold at night, I added a thicker comforter between the quilt and the flat sheet. So I don't know why she had to mention this, as it had been resolved. Most guest find the top cotton quilt enough to keep them warm at night. Lastly, she also complained about how much she paid for her stay here. I have to remind her again, it was high season rates she paid and approved before she booked our home. I have been with Airbnb since 2013, I have had a hosted a LOT of guests from all over the world. I am resigned to the fact that there are a few who would have unreasonable expectations and if not met, will be somehow twist their review a bit. Please just read other reviews for a better assessment of my personality and my guesthouse. Aloha..
