Alma del Sol features 4 ample rooms, 3 of which have balconies to the exterior. Breakfast is served on a sunny rooftop terrace. Witness some impromptu music courtesy of local musicians and enjoy a short walk to many of Guanajuato's historical gems.
Alma del Sol is an old stone and adobe house in Guanajuato's beautiful, historic center. Available are four ample rooms, each with its own bathroom, including two suites. All are decorated with artist and traveler Carol Summers' own collection of folk textiles from all over the world, with an emphasis on India.
The view from the rooftop garden, bar, and dining room is absolutely grand. We are right next to a 250 year - old Jesuit Church, "Templo de la Compañía," offering an exquisite display of the magnificent architecture of the colonial period.
Alma’s location could not be better, a short walk from the University and most museums—including The Diego Rivera Museum, El Museo del Pueblo, and El Museo Alhóndiga de Granaditas. Also nearby are the spectacular Teatro Juarez and two lively meeting places, the Jardín de la Unión and the Plaza de la Paz. A number of good restaurants , serving both Mexican and international cuisine , are just steps away.
Interaction with Guests
I will be accompanying guests during every breakfast in order to provide assistance in planning your day so as to ensure an enjoyable visit to Guanajuato. Please feel free to ask about coordinating a spontaneous printmaking workshop; I would be glad to share some tricks of the trade!
Other Things to Note
If you would like to make a reservation for more than one room, please complete a separate reservation for each of the rooms.
Alma del Sol was just like the photos. Large comfortable rooms, clean, great furnishings, balconies, lots of colour and art. The location is perfect, very central to everything. Hugo is an exceptional host and speaks fluent English. He eats breakfast with his guests and gives endless time to supplying detailed information on what there is to see and do in Guanajuato. He knows everyone and everything. His staff are delightful. We met interesting people there and couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. It was a great taste of Mexico!
A girlfriend and I spent 4 fabulous days at Alma del Sol and I would return in a heartbeat! Comfy bed, clean bedroom and bathroom and AMAZING breakfasts in the glass enclosed room on rooftop terrace all contributed to our wonderful stay. BUT what really made our time in Guanajuato and Alma del Sol so special was Huge, our host. He greeted us when we arrived, gave us printouts of a map and places to eat and see which were very helpful. He had breakfast with us (and the other guests) most mornings and it was so much fun to chat with everyone and hear interesting tidbits of information from Hugo. On our last night, Hugo invited all the guests (plus a couple of his friends) to the rooftop for margaritas. It was a wonderful evening laughing, talking (some french, english and spanish!), and sharing. Hugo has a knack for making everyone feel at home. He is gracious, thoughtful and the perfect host!
Our room was spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was clean and well stocked with towels and there was a pitcher of potable water in a pretty pitcher for teeth brushing. In the sitting area right outside all the bedroom doors is fresh water to fill water bottles or glasses. (No running to the market to buy water bottles. So convenient!) Another bonus... You can flush TP down the toilet. :)
The bells/gongs at the temple next door start at 7am, so if you are light or late sleeper, it may be an issue, but we thought it a memorial part of our stay (in a good way!).
If you will be traveling to Guanajuato, Alma del Sol is THE place to stay. When we were first planning our trip, Alma del Sol was not available so we changed our stay dates by a few days and it was the best travel decision we made. Alma del Sol will hold a special place in my heart for years to come!
Highly recommend! Nice location to theater, church and the city view. Friendly treated us! Because we arrived at midnight and cannot speak Spanish, host provided us a lot of informations and host's friends waited for us. Feeling warm! When we leaved, host allowed us to stay till our departure time! Really appreciate their help!
We arrived early and they were very flexible in allowing us to settle in. We did have a little issue with the room we reserved having been given to someone else but it was an honest mistake and Hugo felt very bad about it. The room we had was also very nice.
The windows are not good at blocking out the noise of the city so bring your earplugs!
Wonderful breakfast and Hugo was a great host.
The location is very convenient to everything.
Fantastic place!!! Highly recommend. Recently myself and a couple friends stayed for 2 days at Hugo's Alma del Sol BnB. Hugo was great, very friendly and very informative. The staff was very nice as well. Great breakfast in an amazing glass enclosed rooftop dining room overlooking Guanajauto. The rooms with the very high ceilings are terrific and give the room a very spacious feel, the pictures do not due the rooms justice. The location is ideal, close to the center of town, all within easy walking distance. We had a great and extremely enjoyable time. Thank You Hugo and Staff! Sincerely, Ed from San Diego, CA Jan 2015
We had a WONDERFUL stay with Hugo. Guanajuato is a beautiful, welcoming city and staying with Hugo was like having a friend in the area. He can answer any question from art, politics, and culture, to where to eat with plenty of local history as well! Our room was clean, warm and charming. The bed was really comfortable and we slept very well in the very dark room! Breakfast on the roof patio was stunning. The food was delicious and we enjoyed talking with all the other guests. The house is an easy walk to El Centro, museums, and restaurants. There was some street noise and the bells from the church across the street but we found it charming and very much a part of life in the busy center of town.
Our stay with Hugo at Alma del Sol exceeded our expectations. We had a spacious room with high ceilings, very comfortable bed, and walls decorated with textiles from India and Uzbekistan that Hugo has collected during various trips. His B&B is located in the heart of Guanajuato, a short distance from the University and many great restaurants and shops. Every morning at 9:00 we were treated to a full, imaginatively prepared breakfast. Hugo is quite the creative chef, having spend a number of years working in several of the top restaurants in Portland, Oregon. The best part of our stay was Hugo himself. A graphic artist, great story teller, humorous, friendly and entertaining and a gracious host. He joined us for breakfast every morning, made great suggestions of what to see in town and where to eat. On our second night with him he invited us to join him and two other couples for margaritas in a beautiful, glassed in room on the roof top. We will definitely be coming back again!
I am an artist that lived in Portland Oregon for many years. I live and work near Alma del Sol Bed and Breakfast in my 250 year old property with a large studio where I teach printmaking workshops. I love meeting people and having guests at Alma del Sol keeps me in contact with people that share travel and life stories.
