Koh Mak is a relatively small island covering an area of 16sqkm.
Activities include scuba diving and snorkeling – there are two dive shops on the island. You can enjoy a traditional Thai massage on the beach or at the Good Time Resort, visit the Koh Mak Museum and discover the history of the island, or learn Thai cooking with "Smile Cooking School". Boats are easily hired to take you to some of the many other unspoiled islands nearby. In the high season, there is a regular speedboat service to the neighbouring island of Koh Chang, the second biggest in Thailand.
It has far more tropical desert island feel to it than other islands nearby ( Koh Chang, Koh Kood) as no matter where you are you are never more than a few minutes from a palm fringed beach.
No wonder that the “Sunday Times” newspaper named Koh Mak as one of the its “World’s Top Secret Beaches in late 2006.
Away from the two main beaches on the northwest and northeast coasts, the scenery mainly compromises rubber and coconut plantations.
Most visitiors opt to see the island by foot, bicycle or on a rental motorbike – there are very few cars on the island as there are very few roads. The island has 24 hour electricity.
No matter where you stay -you are usally within walking or cycling distance of wherever you want to go.
Weather in June-September:
The south-west monsoon usually blows in from the Indian Ocean from June-September, but it can sometimes start early in May (as it has done this year, 2008). The intensity and duration varies from year to year, but in Thailand it is the Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi etc.) that feels the effects the most. In simplistic terms, the heat of March-May brings about a significant difference between land and sea temperatures. This causes hot air to rise creating low pressure which in turn causes the monsoon wind to blow towards land. As the wind blows it attracts moisture from over the oceans which may fall as rainfall on the mainland. Coming in from a south-westerly direction, it is the Andaman Coast of Thailand which is hit the hardest. Downpours can be torrential and may be accompanied by gusty winds and high waves. Some boat services are temporarily suspended during May-October on the Andaman Coast, but it should be noted that it doesn’t rain all day, every day. There is still plenty of sunshine and temperatures remain high.
Although the period from June-September sees more rain on the Andaman Coast, the Gulf Coast (Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan etc.) and the East Coast (Pattaya, Ko Chang etc.) don’t escape completely, but there is still less rainfall here than the Andaman Coast.
The Good Time Resort on Koh Mak consists of comfortable accommodations and private villas, all with unique decoration and spacious rooms. The resort nestles charmingly on the ridge of a small hill between two beautiful beaches, close enough to be convenient for restaurants, shops and the longest beach on the island, but far enough away to enjoy the tranquility and refreshing breeze from the Gulf of Thailand. The message is clear: You are here to relax and not be disturbed by the masses. Visit our romantic serene hillside restaurant and our small romantic pool. The Good Time Resort includes a little library with a communal office available along with free WIFI.
Guests have access to the romantic pool, the library, office-room and generous tropical garden.
The wooden houses is set up in a tropical garden, restaurants and the best beaches of Koh Mak are nearby, easy to reach by foot. Other islands like Koh Chang and Koh Kood are just a few km away. Perfect location for island hopping.
The best way to travel around Koh Mak is by foot, bike or motorbike.

We had a fantastic experience in our romantic little thai wooden house. Our host was very nice and helpful. It was clean and we also enjoyed the restaurant. Above all, the island is beautiful and not spoiled with too many tourists. Thank you for these great holidays!
We stayed in the Basil house for 8 days, and even though the house is located in a nice garden and close to the pool, we were sad that we didn't pay slightly extra to have a nice seaview bungalow or hotel room incl breakfast, since there's lots of nice seaview choices on the island. The standard of the room was lower than expected, we were less keen on the "flower power prints" and it could have been more clean. One of the ceiling lights was poorly mounted with tape and there was small holes in the ceiling above the bed, which was very hard. Also, often the sheets were stained (even though they seemed clean). The room was cleaned every day which was more often than informed. Note that the breakfast is not included in the price, and it's a bit pricy 190 THB/person. The resorts personnel were kind even though their English skills could have been better. They were nice to include transfer to/from the pier for free at arrival/departure. The library (closes at 8 pm) has a big selection of books and DVDs. Unfortunately we were not lucky enough to find any DVDs that were not too worn to work, or not dubbed with Thai.
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Good Time Resort for 6 days at the beginning of October. The house is wonderful; quiet, relaxing, and well appointed, and Yodying and his wife are wonderful hosts who've put a lot of hard work into the resort to make is a great guest experience. Overall, our trip was very nice! My only caution to other travelers is to be sure to check on the weather in the season you plan to travel to Koh Mak as the island is virtually shut down in the off season and it can be a bit hard to find activities.
Very nice resort, very nice little house surrounded by exotic trees and flowers. Koh mak is extremely beautiful and charming, probably one of Thailands last remote islands. We stayed for 2 whole weeks and loved it!!
We really enjoyed the stay in the Thai Teak House - its very authentic, and was perfect. The island itself is quite remote, so be prepared for this. Lots of great food around, all of which we found very safe (we didnt get sick as many do in Thailand). Yodying himself was great, very calm and ready to help. His manager Michael was also fantastic, a great representative of the Good Time Resort. The house is located right near the pool, which is fantastic, and if you walk down the hill and along the beach you will find a great spot with little coral and rocks in the ocean.
Definitely the place to stay if you want to get away from it all and relax.

About the Host, Yodying
Hello, my name is Yodying,
For the last nine years, my wife Kerstin and I managed a little hotel/resort on Koh Mak island in Thailand. We currently live with our son and daughter (10 and 11 years old) in Chang Mai, but visit the resort frequently.
The island of Koh Mak is still very peaceful and has not been overwhelmed by tourists like other Thai islands. We wish to maintain this peace for our guests and give them a quiet and relaxing experience while still providing as many amenities as possible.
The guests that best enjoy Koh Mak and our properties are those that are looking for true tranquility. The beaches are beautiful and isolated, there are typically very few people on the island, and there are no loud bars. There is plenty of time and peace to enjoy good food, do work if you wish at our open office space, and relax on the beach.
We look forward to welcoming you to Thailand and wish you a great time on Koh Mak. We are happy to assist you with your transportation to Koh Mak and to answer any other (website hidden): We receive often questions like: "how will the weather be in August"... sorry- we really don't know. But what we know is that the past years we had many hours of sunshine - even in rainy season. And normally rainy season is not as bad as some imagine. From my experience, rainy season in Thailand is has more sun-shine days then summer in Berlin.
