The Space

On the ground floor of a Queenslander cottage settled in the Greek/Vietnamese Communities of Brisbane.

Famous for querky cafes and a wide range of excellent restaurants of every style. A favourite haven for students and hippies too. Walking distance from the river walkways and 2.5 kms from the city centre (less to the cultural centre and South Bank)- yet in the centre of a quiet street that was, thankfully, untouched by recent floods.

You will have access to a large, cool yet cosy double room with private courtyard at the entrance (independent of the house) with fitted wardrobes, all recently renovated. An attached bathroom is for the use of guests along with a Kitchenette/ laundry next door shared with the house only for laundry purposes as guests leave. Access to landscaped, nightly lit (a switch is on the house wall found on the landing of the back deck stairs) tropical backyard complete with hammocks.

Wireless internet and breakfast included (when we are in Brisbane only). A stones throw from public transport (buses every 5 minutes during rush hour, 10 minutes off peak, from the end of the street) to the Brisbane River and City 2.5 km away. Walking distance to a diverse range of interesting cafes and shops in the heart of the traditional Greek and Vietnamese communities of Brisbane.

The City bicycle scheme is well served in many locations a short walk from the house - can be paid for on a daily basis. Roomy bathroom and fully equipped kitchenette is on the same floor as the room. Additional inner courtyard with a day bed that could accommodate an additional guest. Wifi access and parking is included and breakfast can be arranged. Single sofa bed also in main bedroom so can potentially accommodate another guest there too!

Guest Access

You will have your own private double room and an adjoining courtyard. The bathroom is ensuite for BOTH rooms. If you prefer exclusive use of the bathroom and kitchen/ laundry then we suggest that you book the whole apartment.

Interaction with Guests

I travel between Brisbane and Sydney a lot so when I am not around you will be cared for by my daughter, Eleanor and her boyfriend Kurt. During June and July while we are overseas you will be looked after by the lovely Jenna. There is a discount price as we will not be offering breakfast during that period. Please note that the family live upstairs and we have wooden floors so there is some noise from people moving around upstairs.

The Neighborhood

We LOVE West End because it has a positive energy with so many places for people to gather and spend time together. The variety of restaurants in all directions from the house is a rare find! We are also so close to the river, with great walkways and the ferry as well as the entertainment/ convention centre at South Bank and the city (all walking distance away).

Getting around

From the airport take the airtrain to South Brisbane and leave the station on the side that leads to the Cultural Centre and the River. Walk across the road and follow the signs to the bus terminal (you will need to go up onto an overpass and take the lift/stairs onto the platform) then take the 199 bus towards West End Ferry. It will travel through the centre of West End on Boundary Street and then turn right into Vulture St - you will need to get off at the 2nd stop on Vulture St called Paris St (opposite the Primary School). Then walk back to Turin St and we are half way along on the right hand side - you can't miss the orange fence!
The 199 leaves every 5-10 minutes in peak hours and will take you to the Adelaide St side of the city stopping next to City Hall. It then carries on through China Town and ends it's route at New Farm where you can visit the Power House Arts Centre, have a picnic in New Farm Park and catch the New Farm Ferry back to West End.

Other Things to Note

There are people living above you and we have wooden floors for hygiene reasons and to minimise asthma in family members - so don't be alarmed if you are aware of people walking above you!!! You will have your own private double room and an adjoining courtyard. The bathroom is ensuite for BOTH rooms. If you prefer exclusive use of the bathroom and kitchen/ laundry then we suggest that you book the whole apartment.

  • We stayed at Debras place for 4 nights and it was great. We felt really comfortable and save there. Debra even bought our favourite breakfest cereals. We had everything we could think of. Kitchen utensils, washing machine, water and tea and even fresh fruits. It was a very pleasent stay in Brisbane. Thanks Debra!

  • My stay at the Ginger Bread House, West End, Brisbane was lovely all around. Debra was both very gracious and considerate with my changes to itinerary, even with my mixup with checkout!
The room itself was very comfortable with a nice kitchenette and a decent bathroom. The neighbourhood itself has that real "Queenslander" feel yet, close to and and an easy walk to the "trendy" west end, with great restaurants and coffee shops. I booked my accommodation there based on the comfortable walking distance to the Brisbane Convention centre (15 minutes), as it was a partial work trip for me, I spent most of my time at the Conference, but the studio as a whole had a great vibe and was way more interesting to come back to at night than some generic hotel room :)
I only wish that I would have had more free-time to get to know them a little better. I would absolutely book with them again! Thank you Debra.

    Response from Debra:

    Hi Roger,
So sorry to have missed you last night - I had already crept in to bed and was on the phone! I have attempted to explain the sharing of the facilities in my description of the rooms but obviously not clearly enough - it does say that the ensuite is attached to both rooms and that when there is someone in the room next door you need to ensure the doors are left unlocked etc. That is reflected in the price. Some people prefer to book both rooms to ensure that level of privacy. Never mind you will be prepared next time :)

  • Staying with Debra and her family was an absolute delight. The room is in a converted downstairs of the property. Debra and her family are upstairs and thus the room feels very much like your own space.

You have your own well stocked kitchen for guests! If like me you are going to be staying a while (I stayed with Debra for 5 weeks), then eating out every day is not likely to be an option. Although relatively basic, the kitchen has all the equipment you need to whip up a feast. General goods are supplied, tea, coffee, milk, juice, cereal bread, salt, pepper, oil, butter etc etc. There is a bbq outside that I used frequently - great to sizzle up dinner, while sitting outside in the evening reading your book. There is also a washing machine, so all in all, the list of facilitates is pretty comprehensive.

The Room: Absolutely top quality. Very comfortable bed, plenty of space, a good sized desk for working, great storage for clothes. Due to it's location on the lower floor it stays surprisingly cool even in the heat of a Brisbane summer.

Bathroom is very nicely done as well. When guests are staying in the second spare room, the bathroom is shared so you must be mindful of their privacy, but this was never any problem.

The fact that there were other guests was in fact a great bonus. I met some lovely people during my stay, and when the room is empty, you effectively have an apartment to yourself in the heart of West End.

Location - Simply could not be better. West End is a great place. Very cool, but laid back and unpretentious. A little like a village in the City (although Brisbane in general is a little like a village to be honest - a character I highly commend!). Lots of great bars, varied restaurants, good food shops and local markets nearby. Beyond the attractions of the immediate neighbourhood, you can walk to the south bank in about 20minutes (theatre, exhibitors, public pool on the river, tree-lined walks), Paddington in about 40min (go to Lefty's music hall on the weekend for some eclectic live music and a thumping atmosphere), the city CBD in about 30mins, the Ferry to St Lucia and UQ is about 10mins walk.

Debra is a treasure trove of advice on the city and places in it. Someone who has clearly travelled a great deal and who seemed to have a passion for exploring culture and art. The fact that her family are so great tells a lot about her and her values - a great host who goes the extra mile to make sure your stay is a great one.

A real gem of a place, and a great bargain to boot! Stay, you will not be disappointed. ;)

  • What an amazing little gem this place is… I almost don't want to rate it as then everyone will want to stay and I won't be able to get back in when I need too !.. Perfectly situated close to Southbank, the best little boutiques in trendy West End, only around the corner from the BEST nut/dried fruit shop in the world at "Mick's Nuts", and a short stroll to the the weekend markets. The host is the most caring lady I think I have ever met and she has obviously passed this onto her family, as nothing was too much trouble. I was travelling with a 12 year old and they were so friendly, he is already asking when we are going back. The facilities are fantastic too with everything you think you will need and even some that you don't think of are there too. AMAZING PLACE :-)

  • My first AirBNB experience was disasterous. Luckily I escaped to stay with Debra, who hugged me on sight and then plied me with care, concern and treats. Lovely people, lovely house, great area. I haven't felt that looked after in years. Nothing was too much trouble, and everything you could possibly want was already waiting. Very much looking forward to staying again.

  • It is a clean, cozy place in a great location. This was my first Airbnb and I am sold!! What a wonderful experience--Deborah was so kind and generous. She was great at giving little pointers on how to get to places or what to do. She even let me store my luggage for the day, gave me breakfast every morning, and a delicious bowl of curry when I was heading out!

The one caveat is that the walls are a little thin, but everyone is quiet and it didn't bother me at all!

    Response from Debra:

    Hi Kellee,
Yes, one of the downsides of inner city Brisbane and the Queenslander style houses is that they are built close together and made of wood so not much sound proofing - sorry about that!...Pleasure to have you stay and look after you :)

  • Debra you are awesome and I also would have liked to spend much more time talking with you. Your house is in a prime location. As I mentioned I LOVE the West End. Thanks and I will most certainly stay again.

The house is lovely and is in an excellent location, close to buses, train, and bikeways. I highly recommend staying with Debra! Thank you, Debra and see you in Sydney in January!
