About this listing

The space

Bright modern studio, in a rural setting surrounded by dairy farms, it overlooks the beautiful Lough Derg the River Shannon’s pleasure lake. Killaloe Ballina is considered among Ireland’s most picturesque towns, the small towns are linked by a 300-year-old arch stone bridge and can trace their history back to the 10th century. It is the birthplace of Brian Boru High King of Ireland.

The area offers many leisure activities including, fishing (guided trips are available) sailing, walking, cycling (bike hire available) and golf. Our local park has an open-air heated swimming pool (summer months only) with free outdoor gym facilities.

The towns enjoy a popular restaurant scene ranging from Bistros to traditional Irish, Italian, Chinese and Indian. There is a lively pub scene with evenings of traditional Irish music and some dancing.

We are well served with a local Italian deli/coffee bar, bakers, butcher, organic & health food shop, and supermarket. The Sunday Farmers market is a wonderful source for fresh produce, bread, meat, vegetables, cheese, and fish when available.

Welcome pack of provisions provided to include tea, coffee, milk, homemade bread, preserves, cereals, oils, butter etc.
Depending on the season fresh vegetables/salads are available from the garden

Towels, linen, hairdryer & iron provided.

The apartment is open plan, with a mezzanine bedroom (at the top only some ducking required for those 6ft or more to negotiate stairs.) the area includes a double bed, with lots of space for clothes, which also doubles up as a perfect spot for a baby cot. From your bed, you have delightful views of the garden and across the lake to the Clare Hills.

The Ground floor has a spacious shower and toilet.

The main living/dining area has double doors leading onto a conservatory overlooking the garden & lake which is set up with a small table & chairs.
Outside of this, you have your own decking area with garden furniture, possible a hammock perfect for daydreaming and star gazing.

The open plan fitted kitchen has a Cooker, Hob, Fridge, Freezer & Microwave, with plenty of food preparation equipment and utensils. There is WiFi, TV & DVD player with a small selection of DVD’d. Books and magazine are also available.

The washing machine is in the utility room of the main house and is shared.

The garden is spacious with ample seating/lounging & dining facilities. Use of BBQ equipment.

Cold bags, flasks, folding chairs etc available for away day excursions and picnics.

The distance from the house to the bridge which is the centre of the towns is one mile, it's an easy walk, for the first part of the walk you are on a country road, sharing it with local traffic - cars, vans and farm machinery - after a half a mile you reach footpaths. I recommend wearing a high viz jacket, I have these available.

For Killaloe/ Ballina take Junction 27 off the M7 motorway. The M7 links Dublin (2.5 hrs) & Limerick (30 minutes). Sat Nav (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)

Shannon airport is 45 minutes away by motorway.
Dublin Airport has direct motorway access and can be reached in around 2 hours

There is plenty of parking. Well behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement and with a fee of €5 per day, the garden is large and secure. I have two dogs a reserved elderly whippet and a cheeky energetic spaniel mix.

Heating is by oil fired central heating and will be charged for accordingly at the end of the stay, it is very reasonable. See house rules.

Interaction with guests

This is really up to the guests, I live in the main house full time in Summer and do potter about in the garden. My dogs have full use of the garden at all times.

Other things to note

I am based in rural Ireland and our broadband speeds reflect this, it's fine for picking up mails, searching websites, (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN), but not really up to a load of streaming

It has been our best stay in airbnb so far. Mary is a wonderful host. We loved our stay in her beautiful home. The home is modernised, airy and well equipped. It has a beautiful view from patio/living room/kitchen and from bedroom. She also arranged a birthday cake as requested (we were expecting some store brought and we were surprised and happy to find homemade cake which made birthday special). It not only looked beautiful but tasted yummy. She made sure we were comfortable. We also got to meet adorable dogs. Words fall short to describe the house and Mary hospitality. Would highly recommend to stay in this beautiful house for anyone visiting this area.

Wonderful location - Mary is an excellent host. She has thought of everything (including the things you might forget) for a peaceful stay overlooking the Lough. Lovely homemade bread and a well-appointed studio. You will not be disappointed!

Mary's bright, cosy and perfectly equipped guesthouse is the perfect environment for a relaxing stay. The combination of the phenomal view, the gorgeous garden and the lovely furnished place will make you want to stay forever. In addition to that Mary and Ann are perfect hosts who don't hesitate to assist you if necessary and provide you with homemade treats like rhubarb tart, beetroot relish, carrot cake, soda bread... We can highly recommend discovering Irelands beauty with Mary's guesthouse as your home base.

Staying with Mary/in her studio was a fantastic experience. Communication before was always quick and when I arrived she greeted me at the bus stop with one of her three dogs. I immediately felt welcome. The studio is amazingly bright and spacious and nicely decorated, waking up every morning with the view over the lake to the hill was beautiful. Thanks so much for everything - the bike, the beer in the fridge, the homemade bread and the chicken soup when I felt I caught a cold and - last but not least - for curing me from me fear of dogs. The four weeks passed so quickly I would have happily stayed longer. I really couldn't have made a better choice in terms of accomodation ...

Out stay at Mary's studio was sublime for many reason. We were really busy, our itinerary was setup to see as much as we can of South-West Ireland. Mary's Studio was perfect to allow us to rest between our busy days. Mary is an amazing person, we felt welcome way before our arrival. The breakfast was already arranged and the Studio had everything we needed to cook and prepare our meals. The view on the lough was stunning early in the morning, you can see the fog running in the horizon. We had an amazing time in your wonderful country. A wonderful country filled with wonderful people.

Mary User ProfileMary is a superhost.

I spend my time between Ireland and London where I was in business for many years. In 2012 I was a volunteer for the London Olympics, which was a great experience and where I first heard about Airbnb.

I am a keen gardener and enjoy walking with my 2 dogs, one a fun loving spaniel cross and the other a more reserved whippet. I also like to travel combining eating out with general sightseeing.
