The Space

Bright modern studio, in a rural setting surrounded by dairy farms, overlooking beautiful Lough Derg the River Shannon’s pleasure lake. Killaloe Ballina is considered amongst Ireland’ most picturesque towns, the small towns are linked by a 300 year old arch stone bridge and can trace their history back to the 10th century. It is the birthplace of Brian Boru High King of Ireland.

The area offers many leisure activities including, fishing (guided trips are available) , sailing, walking, cycling (bike hire available) and golf. Our local park has an open air heated swimming pool (summer months only) with free outdoor gym facilities.

The towns enjoy a popular restaurant scene ranging from an award winning Bistro, traditional Irish, Italian, Chinese, Indian and a wonderful fine dining restaurant. There (email hidden)ly pub scene with evenings of traditional Irish music.

We are well served with a local Italian deli/coffee bar, bakers, butcher, organic & health food shop, supermarket and local grown products at the Sunday Farmers Market.

Welcome pack of provisions provided to include tea, coffee, milk, home made bread, preserves, cereals, oils, butter etc.
Depending on the season fresh vegetables/salads are available from the garden

Towels, linen, hair-dryer & iron provided.

The apartment is open plan, with a mezzanine bedroom (some ducking required to negotiate stairs at the top) double bed, ground floor shower room/toilet, the main living/dining area has double doors leading onto a conservatory overlooking the garden & lake and set up with a small table & chairs.

It has a fully fitted kitchen with Cooker, Hob, Fridge, & Microwave. There is WiFi, TV & DVD player with a small selection of DVD’d. Books and magazine available.

The washing machine is in the utility room of the main house and is shared.

The garden is spacious with ample seating / lounging & dining facilities. Use of BBQ equipment.

Cold bags, flasks, folding chairs etc available for away day excursions and picnics..

The distance from the house to the bridge which is the centre of the towns is one mile, it's an easy walk, for the first part of the walk you are on a country road, sharing it with local traffic - cars, vans and farm machinery - after a half a mile you reach footpaths. I recommend wearing a high viz jacket, I have these available.

For Killaloe/ Ballina take Junction 27 off the M7 motorway. The M7 links Dublin (2.5 hrs) & Limerick (30 minutes).

Shannon airport is 45 minutes away by motorway.

There is plenty of parking.. Well behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement and with a fee of €5 per day, the garden is large and secure. I have two dogs a reserved elderly whippet and a cheeky energetic spaniel mix.

Heating is by oil fired radiator and will be charged for accordingly at the end of the stay. See house rules.

Interaction with Guests

This is really up to the guests, I live on the property full time in Summer and do potter about in the garden.

Getting around

This is rural Ireland and as such we only have a limited bus service from the village to the nearby main towns such as Limerick & Nenagh.
But 3 miles away at Birdhill the buses are far more frequent to Dublin, Limerick & Shannon airport. By arrangement I can drop off and pick up from there.

  • We've just spent the most delightful 2 week holiday at this superb studio. The studio itself was bright, clean and airy with beautiful views over the hills and lough to wake up to, and was the most well equipped place we'd ever been in! We didn't want for anything - we were greeted by delicious home-made bread and cakes, and when we opened the fridge it was better stocked than ours is at home with eggs, bacon, black pudding, smoked salmon, butter, milk, wine, chocolates, home-made chutney and jam and I don't know what else. The area of Killaloe/Ballina was lovely and had some great pubs (we enjoyed some traditional irish music and even irish set dancing) and great food in the local restaurants. But best of all was our host Mary and her dogs Jess and Oisin plus two visiting little ones Sally and Daisy, they were a joy. Mary was a font of all knowledge and all delivered in such a relaxed, interesting and funny style, nothing was too much trouble and she made us feel completely at ease and very welcome without being too intrusive, I don't know how she did that but top marks for being the hostess with the mostest! We can thoroughly recommend the 'Studio overlooking Lough Derg', it's excellent value for money.

  • Everything was spot on, could not have been better, except maybe being able to stay longer. The area is gorgeous. The host is a delightful person the whole experience was simply wonderful.

  • Very clean, extremely well-appointed, and an excellent value for the money, especially considering there's so much food in the pantry! Would highly recommend.

  • I don't have enough stars to give to this place! It truly is beautiful -- the photos of it are good, but the reality is even better. The Studio is airy and bright, so that even under gloomy Irish skies, you feel you are in a bright and cheerful space. It's tastefully decorated and really worth twice the price! There is great privacy and yet Mary is right there across the garden path to help you with any question you may have. And I cannot say enough good things about Mary: she leaves you with foods for breakfast (the salmon, the cheese and jams, the bread!) and she is full of ideas of where to go and what to do. Thanks to her, I had terrific meals at local places and lovely hours in a cafe/wine bar. And thanks to her I had a morning in Limerick at the market that was truly memorable (I tagged along on her weekly trip there). Lastly -- the studio is in a quiet rural setting, yet everything is within walking distance. I didn't use the car once in my time there. Again, this is absolutely en par with the nicest accommodations in Ireland. I travel extensively all year long and I would rank this unit as up there among the very best. A memorable stay indeed!

  • My Mom and I had a great stay with Mary. She is very accommodating and helpful. The studio is absolutely lovely, the views amazing and the tomatoes from the garden tasty. The kitchen is very well equipped. I also loved her two dogs. Mary is a great host, kind and funny. We would definitely go back.

  • We had a lovely time staying at Mary's studio. After a few busy months we needed a break in the quiet countryside and this place is just perfect for that. Every few days we walked to the nearby village for some groceries or beers and the rest of the time we enjoyed the peace and quiet, the beautiful view, the nice dogs to play with and Mary's yummy home baked bread. Perfect escape to the country.

  • Travelling from Australia and using AirBnB for the first time, we weren't quite sure what we'd booked or where we'd booked it.
    So happy with our choice.
Location is fantastic: With Ireland's great new motorways, we were able to make separate trips to Cork, Cliffs of Moher, Galway and Dublin - each trip approx 90 minutes away.
Accommodation was more than we expected - very comfortable one bedroom self contained structure - separated from the main house. Mary was very welcoming - fridge was stocked with fresh milk and a Guinness or two. We particularly enjoyed the loaf of sour dough Mary had baked for us.

Very peaceful setting - loved waking up to see the tree lined hill across the lake from our bed.

This area is truly the most picturesque part of Ireland that we experienced.

  • Amazing property, and an amazing host.
Had the most enjoyable time at Mary's place! In a tranquil setting and convenient location for shops, bars, pubs, restaurants or walking, boating or fishing. First class kitchen facilities, spacious and comfortable accommodation. A great time had by all - especially our 11 month old puppy in the enclosed garden with the friendly other dogs.
    Wonderful. Thank you Mary.

  • This review is difficult for me to write, I feel words can not truly justify my fiancé and I's experience here. I guess starting with the basics is easy- the studio. spacious, VERY clean, comfy, and a perfect location if you are looking to see the quiet side of Ireland countryside with a great view of the Shannon. We woke up to cows mooing in the morning and spent the evenings in Mary's beautiful yard with Jess ( the dog.) The feeling I struggle to describe is the overall general warmth and comfort we felt- in a strange way we felt like we were visiting a distant Aunt!

Mary- to start we turned in out rental car and she was gracious enough to grab us ( and drop us) at the bus stop. We had already been traveling for 12 days or so and her gift of making us feel comfortable allowed us to relax and take a breather in the comfort of the studio. The studio felt warm and inviting to us. Mary was always available for small talk or to ask questions and provided great recommendations for the area. She is a very honest woman and tells it how it is ( which is refreshing.) She is also very thoughtful and provided us with reflector jackets to walk into town with.

Thank you Mary for such a wonderful stay! Your place was the perfect middle stopping area and helped us with much needed regrouping for the second half of our journey. Next time we are back in Ireland we will most defiantly be coming to visit!

I spend my time between my place in Ireland and London where I was in business for many years. In 2012 I was a volunteer for the London Olympics, which was a great experience and where I first heard about Airbnb I am a keen gardener and enjoy walking with my 2 dogs, one a fun loving spaniel cross and the other a more reserved whippet. I also love to travel combining eating out and general sightseeing.
