Bright modern studio, in a rural setting surrounded by dairy farms, overlooking beautiful Lough Derg the River Shannon’s pleasure lake. Killaloe Ballina is considered amongst Ireland’ most picturesque towns, the small towns are linked by a 300 year old arch stone bridge and can trace their history back to the 10th century. It is the birthplace of Brian Boru High King of Ireland.
The area offers many leisure activities including, fishing (guided trips are available) , sailing, walking, cycling (bike hire available) and golf. Our local park has an open air heated swimming pool (summer months only) with free outdoor gym facilities.
The towns enjoy a popular restaurant scene ranging from an award winning Bistro, traditional Irish, Italian, Chinese, Indian and a wonderful fine dining restaurant. There (email hidden)ly pub scene with evenings of traditional Irish music.
We are well served with a local Italian deli/coffee bar, bakers, butcher, organic & health food shop, supermarket and local grown products at the Sunday Farmers Market.
Welcome pack of provisions provided to include tea, coffee, milk, home made bread, preserves, cereals, oils, butter etc.
Depending on the season fresh vegetables/salads are available from the garden
Towels, linen, hair-dryer & iron provided.
The apartment is open plan, with a mezzanine bedroom (some ducking required for those 6ft or more to negotiate stairs at the top) double bed. Ground floor shower room/toilet. The main living/dining area has double doors leading onto a conservatory overlooking the garden & lake which is set up with a small table & chairs.
It has a fully fitted kitchen with Cooker, Hob, Fridge, & Microwave. There is WiFi, TV & DVD player with a small selection of DVD’d. Books and magazine available.
The washing machine is in the utility room of the main house and is shared.
The garden is spacious with ample seating / lounging & dining facilities. Use of BBQ equipment.
Cold bags, flasks, folding chairs etc available for away day excursions and picnics..
The distance from the house to the bridge which is the centre of the towns is one mile, it's an easy walk, for the first part of the walk you are on a country road, sharing it with local traffic - cars, vans and farm machinery - after a half a mile you reach footpaths. I recommend wearing a high viz jacket, I have these available.
For Killaloe/ Ballina take Junction 27 off the M7 motorway. The M7 links Dublin (2.5 hrs) & Limerick (30 minutes).
Shannon airport is 45 minutes away by motorway.
There is plenty of parking.. Well behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement and with a fee of €5 per day, the garden is large and secure. I have two dogs a reserved elderly whippet and a cheeky energetic spaniel mix.
Heating is by oil fired radiator and will be charged for accordingly at the end of the stay. See house rules.
Interaction with Guests
This is really up to the guests, I live in the main house full time in Summer and do potter about in the garden.
This is rural Ireland and as such we only have a limited bus service from the village to the nearby main towns such as Limerick & Nenagh.
But 3 miles away at Birdhill the buses are far more frequent to Dublin, Limerick & Shannon airport. By arrangement I can drop off and pick up from there. I am happy to help with your travel plans and itinerary before and during your trip.
No smoking in the premises. Would appreciate outside shoes being left in the conservatory, outdoor shoes left for garden use. Please keep pets off the furniture, they are also not allowed upstairs, dog bed/bowls can be supplied. Child/dog gate available to cut off stairs. Baby travel cot and high chair available.
Oil fired central heating, when used reading will be taken from oil tank before and at the end of the stay, it's an economical system and very effective. Regular daily electricity use is included in the studio price.

Mary's warm-hearted hospitality made for a wonderful stay at her studio in Ballina. She often checked-in to see that we were comfortable and had everything we needed. A fridge full with eggs, smoked salmon and Irish soda bread was a welcome treat when we arrived late in the evening hungry for some supper.
The studio was well-appointed with a fully equipped kitchen, TV, WiFi and lots of pantry essentials. We got a great night's sleep in the cozy loft bedroom, where we woke up each morning to gorgeous panoramic views of Mary's beautiful gardens, green fields (complete with cows) and rolling hills, overlooking the River Shannon. Mary's lovely dogs Jess and Oisin were great company, too.
Our only regret was that we didn't get to spend more time with Mary herself. What a great woman!
your cordial welcome made us feeling at home from the very first moment. The Studio - full of light, well equipped and lots of space in and outdoor. Thank you for the delicious homemade goods and filling up the fridge. Thank you Jess - you made me play again, thank you for playing with me. We just feel sorry about the weather being so lovely all the time, so we could not really dwell.
Being at the Studio was just the right decision to discover the middle and the middle west of Ireland. As it was easy to come it was soooo hard to leave.
Mary is a great, entertaining hostess. The Studio is perfect for two and well equipped for self catering. Would definitely return.
Mary met us upon our arrival. Showed us the Studio and introduced us to the dogs. We loved Jess the little dog and she reminded us of our own dog back in Australia. Mary had baked us 2 small loaves of brown bread and there was plenty of supplies in the studio. Lough Derg is a very pretty place and the studio is handy to everything. Thanks Mary for a great stay!
I spend my time between my place in Ireland and London where I was in business for many years. In 2012 I was a volunteer for the London Olympics, which was a great experience and where I first heard about Airbnb
I am a keen gardener and enjoy walking with my 2 dogs, one a fun loving spaniel cross and the other a more reserved whippet. I also love to travel combining eating out and general sightseeing.
