My experience in Johannes’ house was not good at all. So, I don’t recommend anyone to stay in Johannes’ house, for your safety and commodity better to stay in a hotel where you have food, internet and some people around. Vilanculos is a town with not touristic infrastructure, so difficult to get around, especially if you are in a private house without phone and internet.
First, the house is quite far from the town or civilization; therefore I had to take taxis (which are very expensive (7-10 mins ride=$10 to 5 usd) to buy food & water, or go to a hotel to eat something. At night the roads are dark and dangerous for tourist. If you go to Vilanculos bring a flash light with you. The beach close to his house is totally lonely; I was the only tourist, so kind of dangerous. He wrote “Beachlodge is your neighbor and Casa Rex is in walking-distance”, but Beachlodge (hotel closeby) is an abandoned and Casa Rex, which I recommend you to stay in, it’s not a walking distance at all, you need a taxi to get there. He arranged a taxi to pick me up at the airport, which was nice, but they have their own arrangements and Johannes told me the taxi cost $16 usd (500 mts) and I found out that local people pay $ 2-3 usd (50-70 mts). The taxi driver was very helpful and nice, but definitely too expensive and it wasn’t fair the amount charged for tourist. The house is in good conditions, but they don’t have internet, don't serve breakfast and they don’t have anything to offer as food, water, coffee, etc. I needed to buy my own water and things for making my coffee. They don’t have supplies as hand soap, shampoo, etc. He also advertises the house as: one bedroom (accommodates 2), but he charged me extra ($23 usd) the last night, because we were 2 people sleeping in the same bedroom and bed, instead of one person. I am still wondering what kind of extra service he gave me for that extra charge????
Additionally, he was very rude with me, threatened me to stop the taxi (his friend) that took me to the airport the last day if I did not pay the extra money for my guest at that moment. I was late for my flight and he said “I don’t care if you lose your flight, just stop in an ATM and pay me (since he doesn’t accept credit cards).
My experiences in other AirBnB houses have been nice, except this one.
I am happy that Valentina was not our first guest and that everyone who reads our other feedbacks can understand that she is telling a lot of nonsense. On her arrival she was served a welcome diner which she devoured with much delight. Coffee was offered, too (brewed with the delicious water of our own source). We provide a mobile phone with a local SIM-card for our guests to ensure they can make local calls (taxi, or any other needs) and that they are reachable without spending on roaming. Shampoo and hand soap are located in the bathroom.
Going to the centre by taxi costs ca. MZN 100,- (USD 3,-) - one way- no matter if you are local or tourist. (see previous feedback). A reliable (!) taxi driver who goes to the airport, waits upon your arrival and brings you back to our house costs ca. MZN 500,- (USD 16,-) - a normal price paid by locals and tourists - paid directly to the taxi driver. How can Valentina claim that locals would pay an amount so little that it wouldn't even cover partially the cost of petrol? I suppose she mixed up something due to a language barrier.
Casa Rex is distant less than 2km and yes, I do recommend it too (to anyone who can afford it).
The beach of Vilanculos is regarded part of the 100 most beautiful beaches in the world and being not overcrowded is an advantage and not a handicap for most people.
This listing is clearly quoted as a self catering place and with different prices for single or double use (as common in most parts of southern Africa).
For a person with such a subjective sense of danger it is even more astonishing that she brought external people to stay over night without telling anyone in advance - refusing to adapt the booking on AirBnb, refusing to pay what is clearly quoted on our listing and severely compromising our own sense of safety.
This really is a nice place. My room was very large with a nice ensuite bathroom. Gradil, who lives there, speaks good English, and was really helpful. Johannes, who arranges everything, always responded immediately to any questions I had, and even sent me a letter of invitation that I needed to get the tourist visa to Mozambique.
It is a 25 minute walk to the commercial area of town, or you can take a taxi for about 3 US dollars. There is a really good restaurant just a 5 minute walk from this house.
This is a lovely, lovely home in Vilankulos. The house is well-equipped and well-maintained. There was some slight confusion on our arrival regarding the number of beds we needed, but this was all sorted out quickly. Quilandia, Johannes' wife, is extremely nice, helpful and interesting. She made us a delicious dinner on our arrival for which we were extremely grateful. The location is very good and we followed Johannes' advice to take a boat out with Dolphin Dhows to the islands and this was a lovely day. Thank you for a wonderful few days.
Johannes was really helpful from the moment I booked. Providing all necessary documents for the visa (prof of accommodation) and a long list of recommendations of things to do in town.
The house was as shown on the photos. It is a very nice house. The person in charge of the house and welcoming the guests was really nice and provided many tips on Vilanculos.
I strongly recommend to stay at Johannes house. Everything was perfect.
This is really a very lovely home with fantastic hosts!!! It's a little paradise! The hospitality of the family is heartwarming including a delicious welcome lunch, recommendations for tours to the archipel, a nice walk to show us the sights and nice restaurants in the neighborhood, etc. The rooms are spacious, nice and very clean (every day cleaning) We would love to recommend this place to everyone!!
It is in fact a lovely home! We really enjoyed our stay, the house was well kept, very spacious and well located. We were very well received by Papaíto. We recommend this house ti anyone who wants to spend a nice time in Vilankulos!
