About this listing
A serene Edwardian garden studio with bespoke bathroom and full kingsize bed set minutes away from Richmond centre and its spectacular parks. Excellent public transport links to central London. A peaceful spot from which to explore the big city.
Part of a converted Edwardian property, the studio is set at the back of a family home with independent access via a private, mature olive and rose-lined garden. It is fully self-contained with its own luxurious bathroom including large standalone bath and a close-away French kitchenette (fridge/freezer, electric hob, electric kettle and basic kitchen utensils including plates, pans, cutlery, glasses, cups etc).
Traditional period styling with minimalist twist ensures that the apartment is both elegant and cosy with handcrafted furniture and comfortable kingsize bed.
The property is approximately 7 minutes' walk from Richmond overland train station (fast train to Waterloo) and district line tube and benefits from being close to world-renowned Kew Gardens, the Old Deer Park with its open air swimming pool and quaint Kew Village as well as the boutiques and restaurants of Richmond town centre. Major bus routes to central London and Kingston run 24 hours nearby.
Via private gated lane next to main house and private garden which is shared only with the family or with the guests staying in our apartment if we are away.
Interaction with Guests
I live in the main house with my family and am generally on hand to offer local tips, help with anything you may need and and a friendly face. Some of our guests come back again and again and have become good friends, others are completely independent and enjoy total privacy. We're happy to cater to both types.
Richmond, and particularly the location of this studio, offers both proximity to central London as well as total escape from city life. Kew Gardens can be seen from outside the main house, the historic Old Deer Park is a few minutes away, the site of the original Richmond Palace is a lovely walk along the river, Richmond Park is within reach as is the riverside trail towards Hampton Court in one direction and Central London in the other. There is a plethora of world cuisine quite literally on our doorstep as well as some hidden gems in Richmond itself and in nearby Kew. (Personal favourites include the atmospheric cafe at Petersham Nurseries, the Saturday organic market in Heron Square - and the craft market the next day - and Ham House with its cafe and shop in the gardens and the terraced gardens on Richmond Hill itself.) There is also some great shopping to be done on Richmond high street and hill. Cafes and meeting places as well as quiet spots to work or dream abound, whatever the time of year.
The 65 bus runs day and night between Kingston and central London. Mainline overland train station and district line tube is 7 minutes walk from the studio. There is metered parking nearby on Kew Road (free from late afternoon and overnight) and free parking in nearby residential streets towards Kew.
Other Things to Note
Parking is possible in nearby residential streets towards Kew (see Stanmore Road for restricted parking and nearby Gainsborough for unlimited parking) and at certain times unpaid on the main road outside and metered parking at other times. When we are away, I am happy to offer my own parking space (by agreement). Bikes can be stored behind a locked gate in the private garden. Please note, we do have some renovations going on at the moment in our apartment - adjacent to the studio - and workmen will, at times, require access via the side alleyway and garden. We will do our best to minimise disruption to guests. There have been some major changes to the decking and garden recently which we hope to reflect in new pictures asap! We expect only interior work from now until the middle of July by which time all works ought to finished.
The studio is set behind a family home so guests are kindly asked to behave responsibly and with respect. No smoking/candles/live flames. Guests are welcome to make use of the garden though with families living close by we're looking for guests who will appreciate the quiet setting so we do request no parties, events, loud music or guests without prior written approval.
An earlier guest wrote "Great space, wonderful host, and convenient location!" and all we can do is agree.
The location is great, less than a 10 minute walk to Richmond centre with trains going into London, tons of stores, pubs and restaurants.
Tess made us feel very welcome throughout our stay and we can highly recommend staying with her.
Great space, wonderful host, and convenient location!
Tess was an incredibly kind host. She was so helpful when my flight was delayed and my luggage was lost and was always ready with great suggestions for things to do in the neighborhood. The studio is extremely well-designed and very functional and there is a beautiful garden that is shared with the main house. It's located in a great part of Richmond--close to shops, restaurants, and public transit. And it's an easy (and beautiful) 25-minute walk to the National Archives in Kew. I stayed for six weeks while I was researching in the archives and would certainly stay again if I had the opportunity!
We had a really excellent stay at this wonderful little hideaway in Kew. It's the perfect place to stay to see Kew Gardens, as the Lion Gate entrance is practically across the road! Tess was very responsive beforehand, and was very nice about our arriving slightly later than we had anticipated. The studio is spotless, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom thoughtfully equipped with twin sinks and a *very* generous bathtub.
Tess was not around so unfortunately we did not meet her, however she made arrangements to get the key to us via a friend who was very helpful, kind and provided plenty of information.
The listing is completely accurate as described. The house is immaculate, beautifully presented and conveniently located.
Many thanks tess for a lovely stay
Lovely stay. Really quiet despite being very close to Kew Gardens. Highly recommended if you really want to explore the Richmond area in depth.
Great little place in a perfect location! Super close to
Richmond train station and to beautiful Richmond. Thanks for being such a great host even though you were out of town. :)
Even though Tess was on vacation during my recent stay at her studio, she was always so very helpful and answered any queries by text etc and had her friends on call to sort anything if there was an issue! She ensured my stay was comfortable and hassle free, and it was lovely to stay there!

About the Host, Tess
Independent film-maker working mainly in London and Prague with young family. Love my rose garden, my high-powered MacBook Pro that lets me do almost anything almost anywhere, and my family (obviously not in that order.) I also love pitching up in new places at a moment's notice and living like the locals, the simpler the better. Am pretty relaxed as a host, consider my home a place of sanctuary and love to share it with like-minded others. Into quality, not so interested in effect. My current life motto is probably closest to E. M. Forster's "Only connect".
