Hi this listing is setup to assist those searching for accommodation groups rather than just an individual or couple. Airbnb lists each room as a seperate listing and as each room is really only designed for a couple, a group searching for accomodation for more people is unlikely to even see our listing in their search query, hence this shared listing.
Yabbiekayu is slowly but surely expanding, currently we have 3 Bungalows with private bathrooms and 2 Pondoks with shared bathrooms. Hence can comfortably accommodate 5 couples in individual four poster beds. In addition to this the bungalows are quite large and hence extras can be accommodate in spare beds as needed, bringing our total current capacity to around 14 or so. For a better understanding please check out the listings of each individual bungalow.
Booking more than one bungalow can be done through each bungalows private listing or by emailing us directly. Calendars on each bungalow show availability.
Yabbikayu honestay is built overlooking rice fields on the edge of the charming cultural, tourist village of Tembi, in Yogyakarta City. Experience relaxed afternoons on the verandahs overlooking the rice paddies or gardens, and pleasant nights disturbed only by the sounds of frogs and crickets watching the fireflies float past. Relax in a private out door bathroom with a bath for two under the stars, before retiring to our large 4 poster beds for a relaxing nights sleep, prior to a luxury breakfast on the porch before setting off on your days adventure to explore the village and the enticing historical city of Yogyakarta.
Please look at each of our bungalows, prior to booking as they are all unique and one may suit you better than the others.

Well, my family spent the last day of our Yogja tour in Yabbiekayu. It came as a respite after the busy days in town. A serene place to relax and slow down. Perfectly set in the already existing surroundings.
The spacious houses, with the open air bathroom and the friendly staff - just perfect.
In the early morning hours we had a stroll through the kampong with so many people already busy with their morning chores.
We requested the transport to and from to be arranged by the host as well as a massage for our womenfolk. According to my wife it could not had been better.
It was a pleasure to meet you and your family, Fascinating conversations, good to share about the life of an expat in Asia and the differences between Malaysia and Indonesia. I'm so glad that your wife and daughter enjoyed their massages, the traditional masseuse here in the village really is quite amazing.
Thanks so much for all your private comments that we were well above your expectations, I will let the staff know
Really hope we see you all again soon
With 6 friends we've stayed 3 nights (initially we booked 2 nights but we had such a great time that we booked another night) in 3 of Dave's bungalows in Yogya. After a few hectic days in Jakarta and Bandung, Yabbiekayu was the perfect place to stay. We got a really warm and personal welcome from Dave, Bakti and the staff. The whole crew is very kind and more than willing to help with wathever you'd like or need during your stay. They made sure we had a driver who brought us to the Borobudur in the middle of the night, a kind local guide who drove with us all day on scooters and provided a complete sight seeing tour and someone who dropped us at the airport really early in the morning. Breakfast is also worth mentioning, they have a delicious breakfast menu with fresh fruit, eggs (boiled, poched, fried, you name it), toast, nasi goreng, coffee, tea, muesli, yoghurt etc.
I'd recommend this fantastic place to everyone, we had a great time :)
So nice to have you guys here, and thanks for the magnificent review. We have been talking about the Dutch mob invasion since you left, as the cooking staff were amazed by how much you all liked the breakfast and how many second helping and extras you could consume... surprising for our small Indonesian staff, but great to see you enjoyed our food. We do go out of our way to use as much locally grown organic produce as possible and to prepare food as healthily as possible, no aluminium pots, no palm oil, no MSG, everything washed in spring water, even our eggs get washed prior to storage haha, so I am glad you enjoyed the end result of that effort, I will pass on your compliments to the cooking staff
I am also glad that we were able to assist you all smoothly with your tour needs, only next time stay longer as there is so much more to see haha. Safe travels onwards and see you soon again, Dave
We really couldn't have stayed at more idyllic, homestay in the whole of Indonesia. Dave and his team, Babun, Bakti and all the helpers were wonderfully welcoming and warm and nothing was too much trouble. The bungalows are fantastic, hand-built wooden structures and in the most perfect setting, surrounded by lush gardens and beautiful local vegetation with frangipani trees and bougainvillea in the open air bathroom. The incredible Borobudur and Prambanan temples are a must see and not far in a private car or taxi the team can arrange for you. We explored the local villages on bicycles, waving at friendly children and adults, wide smiles on their faces. If travelling to Jogja, and want to find a piece of serenity and calm stay at Yabbiekayu as it's close enough to the city and the temples but far away enough to really feel the peace and tranquility of village life and ultimately a really uplifting experience. I hope to visit again one day, a truly special place.
We stayed in bungalow 2 and it was almost perfect. I strongly recommend an accomodation outside the city, and i doubt you can find a better place.
We had al lovely stay! After leaving Jakarta it's a warm green environment with excellent staff. I would surely recommend this place to anyone!
What a delightful place! From the moment we arrived off a hot, sweaty train in Yogya (which was an hour late!) we were immediately met by a very nice chap who whisked us off to this little haven! Despite the fact we arrived late into the afternoon/ early evening the staff were so attentive, helping us organise a trip for our 1 full day there. The bungalows (we stayed in no. 2 I think) are beautifully done, beds super comfy and the outdoor bathroom exquisite! The outdoor bath was amazing to look up at the stars&moon. (Tip.wash the bath out first as some little insects may have sneaked in! But nothing to worry about at all! This is an outdoor / indoor living space after all!) have to mention the breakfast which was fabulous! Delicious and also brought and served on your own terrace which was a highlight for us. We were lucky to be there when Joani (a long standing tenant) was holding a free yoga class, defiantly worth doing, was fab! Sadly we had to leave very early for a flight but the staff were kind enough to make us up a little breakfast and book a taxi for us! . It's a tranquil little spot away from the chaos of city life but a stones throw away should you need to dip your toes in. Can't recommend this place enough and would like to wish Dave all the success in his future a a for this fab place. Thank you for having us.
Super great place! The lovely and helpful team spoiled us with amazing food, superb massages and alternative travel tips. We fully recommend this place if you want to get in touch with the rural Jogja and relax in a beautiful place. We would come anytime again and will keep recommending to everybody travelling to Java!

The main person behind Yabbiekayu Homestay Bungalows is Dave, an Aussie who's been based out of the small village of Tembi for almost 10 years, working regionally as a specialist in sustainable housing, emergency shelter and disaster coordination.
The bungalows are managed on a day to day basis by Bakti Widiarti who has been working with Dave since 2009 and has much experience hosting foreigners in Yogyakarta.
Yabbiekayu: A Yabbie is a small freshwater crustacean that lives in rivers in Australia, whilst Kayu is the Indonesian word for wood, hence the Wooden Yabbie. The name comes out of a crossover of Dave's prior experience running an internet publishing company called (website hidden), his lifelong obsession with timber, mixed with the feeling of joy of the expression "yippieayu!". In many ways the name sums up the experience of a foreigner living in a small village (pond) with a love for timber.
Yabbiekayu was always intended as communal and friendly homestay, a place to meet like minded people, to relax as a base, to potter around the village and experience Jogja.
Our goal is to be a model of ecologically sustainable tourism, creating quality employment for local people while sharing the remarkable experience of life in a small village in Java. Our staff are loyal, caring and honest. They have worked with foreigners for many many years, welcoming hundreds of visitors, showing people around Jogja and catering to their needs. They can help out with requests from hiring motorbikes, masseurs or babysitters to finding a good optometrist, a secluded temple or an exciting art exhibit.
Our dream is for Yabbiekayu to be small, friendly, adaptable and flexible to your needs and wishes. we look forward to your visit.
