The space
It feels like you are in a dream because you are! This fox shaped home came to the owner/designer/builder in a dream and slowly came to life over a 4 and a half year time period.
Relax in a carefully curated and hand crafted treehouse. Enjoy a luxurious woodland retreat adorned with fancy fox and copper and gold finishings throughout.
The Fox is the guest house to our private home. We live on 6 acres next to Bradbury Mountain State Park. So it feels like you are surrounded by a great deal more than 6 acres of woods.
You will have access to 2 parking spaces in an active off street driveway.
We have a dog that roams the property freely. Other neighborhood dogs also can be found on occasion exploring the woods throughout the day as well.
Guest access
The treehouse is accessible from a 500 foot long gravel covered uphill trail. The trail is illuminated by motion sensor lights at night. We recommend that you still bring a headlamp or flashlight for the trails.
A cart is provided to help you bring your luggage up to the fox (In the snowy season we provide a sled). Packing in backpacks may be a comfortable option.
Guests have access to 2 parking spots near the trail entrance. Guests have access to the gravel trail, the woods around the fox (please respect private property signs).
Guests also have access to trail into the state park.
Guests have access to a private fire pit area and outdoor grill.
Other things to note
Beds:
There is a queen CozyPure Latex Mattress in the snout and two full size CordaRoy bean bag beds in the ears but these are best suited for kids.
Bean bag chairs convert into full “mattresses” which are more like foam pits. They are short (not great for tall people). They do not offer a great deal of support. Kids have explained it as “cloud like”. The Copper Fox is set up to be most comfortable for a couple or a family with 1 - 2 kids.
Kids:
***The fox is not recommended for young children. We suggest elementary age and up. You know your children best and we trust you will make the best decision for your family. There is a steep ship's ladder into the loft area. And there aren’t any child safe locks on cabinets or covers on outlets.
Safety:
We have fire extinguishers inside the fox and at the fire pit/grill area. There is a fully stocked first aid kit, LifeVac anti choking device, fire blanket in the kitchen, escape ladder, smoke detector and carbon Monoxide detector.
Winter:
The private woodland trail will be groomed in the winter months and we will provide snowshoes to hike back to the Fox.
You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own snowshoes as well.
Things to do in the area:
Enjoy easy access to Bradbury Mountain State Park, endless hiking, mountain biking, road and gravel biking, fat biking, horseback riding, bird watching, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, fishing, forest bathing, beaches, visiting Freeport, LLbean, local breweries (Maine Beer Company), Portland, the Coast, Pineland Farms, Wolfe’s Neck, the list goes on!
Sustainability:
We milled the wood ourselves from local trees. All from within 30 miles of the Fox. We milled the shingles from local cedar. The bark and offcuts from the milling process as well as lumber offcuts were all chipped for paths around the fox. Having little waste was very important to us since traditional building processes can have a great deal of waste. The walls are 1 foot thick using hemp wool (carbon negative) insulation and Wood Fiber board insulation on the exterior. We used the latest building science to build an efficient, tight but breathable home to ensure the fox would use as little energy as possible to heat and cool. The windows are all high efficiency Marvin windows. The Fox is heated and cooled by a Samsung heat pump and a Jotul gas stove. The appliances are all energy efficient. There was very little impact to the earth around the build keeping the trees and Moss intact and minimally impacted. The electricity to power the fox is produced on the property.
