The Space

My home is a cozy 2 story cottage on the Leadenwah Creek, 19 miles southwest of downtown Charleston, SC. There are 4 bedrooms with mine downstairs & 3 upstairs. Two of those bedrooms are featured for rent on this site. However, I only rent ONE at a time. The one you get depends on which one of my children is home when you arrive. They are both nice and comfortable. There is a television in the living room with 10 channels, including the major networks, & Apple TV featuring Netflix & HBO GO. Wireless internet is included.

Please note that I have 2 listings, the other being Rest Awhile Wadmalaw Style. Each listing offers 1 bedroom with a full-sized bed for $100/night. If you have a 3rd person or a child or two and prefer not to rent both bedrooms, I also offer a comfortable couch, window seat, bed swing & double chaise for fetching a good night's rest. There will be a $15/night charge for extra sleepers in these spots.

My kitchen and living area is to be lived in as if it's your own. Meals taken on the porch overlooking the Leadenwah Creek are peaceful and relaxing. My washer and dryer are available for you, also.

Enjoy the quiet peace that Wadmalaw and my 10 wooded acres afford you. Take a free tour through the woods & neighboring cemetery accompanied by my 4-legged guides, Moose & Ted. (A belly-rub tip is greatly appreciated.) Swim, kayak, fish, enjoy the sunset from my private dock. If it's cool, have a bonfire. Fresh eggs, compliments of my French hens, Sammy & Maggie, are available & encouraged. Country amenities abound at my home.

My birder visitors have exclaimed about the rookery, laden with no less than a dozen white egrets, existing in a tall, droopy tree jutting out from a hunk of mud in our marsh. This lush marsh, tidal creek and mud out my front door draw a variety of fowl, including Snowy & Great Egrets, Clapper Rails, Tri-Color Herons, and Red-Tailed Hawks, to name a few.

Your drive to nearby historic plantations is a tree-lined, country delight without city traffic. The same is true for day trips to the resort islands of Kiawah and Seabrook. John's Island is right next door with many relaxing activities, including horseback riding & farmers' markets. Our own Wadmalaw has America's only tea plantation and a local winery boasting the popular Sweet Tea vodka.

Folly Beach is a 23 mile drive. Kiawah's Beachwalker Park is 22 miles. This is owned & operated by Charleston County Parks and is a lovely drive on an oak-canopied country road.

Other Things to Note

We have 2 large friendly dogs that live outside.

  • Fran was a wonderful host and very hospitable! Wadmalaw Island and Ruby Ranch are just lovely and I can't wait to go back! Highly recommend this listing to anyone planning a visit to the Charleston area.

  • We wanted a relaxing getaway for the weekend, and we found it in spades at Fran's Relax and Stay Awhile. Both my husband and I napped on the bed swing on the front porch, picnicked on the double chaise lounge on the upper porch, and even took a dip off the end of the dock with Moose and his stick. Fran was very welcoming, sharing her wine and breakfast food with us. The place was easy to find, and very clean. We would definitely return when we need a recharge.

  • What a great place to spend some time. Great host and a great place to stay. We not only enjoyed her but her other guests as well. She was great in advising us as to capture the essence of Charleston in the one day we had available. We would love to return.

  • This was our first Airbnb experience, and what a wonderful start! Fran is a wonderful hostess, and her home is lovely, welcoming and relaxing. It was everything we hoped for, peaceful, in a beautiful setting and a perfect location for exploring the whole area. We loved meeting Fran, some of her family and friends, and her animal companions.....and were honored to enjoy a campfire cookout during our stay. The marshland setting was lovely, and the perfect place to enjoy low country sunrises and sunsets--and we'll enjoy our photos for years to come. We loved the porch swing, window seat, comfy bedrooms and French press coffee. A perfect place to experience true low country flavor. Thank you Fran, Ben, Bill, Moose, Ted, Buddy and the girls for an awesome getaway! I hope we can return again one of these days, for more fun and friendship.

  • Ruby Ranch is a magical place. Though Fran was away during my stay, Ted and Moose (dogs) were the best hosts!

  • We spent a great time in Fran's place! Liked the house, the area, but above all, Fran and Bob were outstanding hosts.
Will come again in the next year.

I was born and raised in Estill, SC and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Nursing. I work at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC in Cardiac Surgery. Getting home to my comfy cottage in the woods, on the creek is the best! I am a single, empty-nester with bedrooms to spare.
