We are just as happy to give you plenty of peace and quiet. Your call. You will find the Casita is perfectly positioned to offer you plenty of privacy during your stay.

The Neighborhood

We love our little neighborhood. Every morning we awake to the songs of the tropical birds around us.

We have a sports plaza right next door and depending on the day, or time of year, there may be soccer matches, children from the local school exercising, or practicing band for an upcoming parade. We've even had 2 & 4 wheel motorcycle rallys staged from our little plaza.

Once a year, our neighborhood Fiestas are held. This is a 4-day event where everyone gets together for a typical rodeo with horse show, calf roping, bull fights, horse parade, food, music and dancing.

At any time of day, you may find folks using the plaza for walking, jogging, or cycling. In the afternoons, friends and families frequently gather to play or kick around a soccer ball.

It's a great neighborhood!

Getting around

We're about 30 minutes from the Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Santamaria, SJO. The taxi fare from the airport to the house will run between $35 & $40, or we can prearrange to pick you up for a flat fee. The drive will take you through the scenic Aguacate (avocado) mountains. It's another hour's drive to the Pacific coast beaches.

If you rent a vehicle, secure parking is available on the property.

There is regular bus service from Atenas to San Jose, other neighboring towns, and the Pacific beaches.

Taxi fare to Atenas Centro from the Casita runs about $2.

Other Things to Note

Depending on the day you arrive, you may enjoy the wonderful Farmers' Market held every Friday morning, between 7 AM and 12 Noon. This is a great place to stock up on fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs, cheese and yogurt.

If you are without a vehicle, we will be happy to provide transportation to the local grocery store shortly after your arrival, so you can pick up staples to make your stay more enjoyable. Depending on our schedule, we may also be able to take you to the Farmers' Market on a Friday morning.

Atenas has daytime temperature ranges from the upper 70°'s to upper 80°'s, with rare days in the low 90°'s. Nighttime temperatures usually stay in the 60°, but have been known to dip into the the 50°'s overnight.

We recommend you pack an umbrella if you will be with us during the Green Season from May to December.

We are a retired couple with many years of experience living in Costa Rica. We can help you plan your itinerary to visit all the "must see & do" attractions in Costa Rica.

If you are a member of the worldwide geocaching site, you will find Casita Limón the perfect place to log a new cache find and pick up, or drop off, some travel bugs for your fellow geocachers.

  • Wow! This was the perfect place to spend our first weeks in Costa Rica on our move from the USA! Starting with Pat and John meeting us at the airport, they were absolutely wonderful hosts. They have a wealth of information about Costa Rica and, specifically, Atenas. They saved me lots of money and headaches! Atenas is a great central location for visiting San Jose, the beach, or the mountains. It's a great town to get a taste of Costa Rica, with plenty of expats to help in the process. A car is a big help - you could walk to Casita Limon from town, but it's not a real pleasant walk, especially in mid-day sun. The location was perfect for us - in a typical Tico neighborhood. We met some great local residents and enjoyed beautiful walks down to the end of the dead-end street they're located on. The plaza of their barrio is right across the street (don't worry, it wasn't noisy) and was a great place to walk or play with our dog. Yes, they welcome dogs and ours had a great time with their two dogs. The pool was delicious after a day out and about. You also get full use of their "rancho" - covered outdoor area with grill, tables, etc. A great "mirador" (lookout) gives wonderful views of the surrounding area and sunrises and sunsets. The casita is private enough that you never feel you're at someone else's house. We had our own remote for the gate that belongs to the casita, so coming and going was a breeze. The casita was well equipped and comfortable. The bedroom has AC and several windows that open to let in the pleasant breeze. The kitchen/living/dining area had no openable window, no AC, and could get hot and closed-in feeling. They've ordered a screen door which would help, leaving the door open and the bugs out. A porch just outside was a great place to hang out, and of course you have the whole grounds to enjoy. I would absolutely recommend this place! You can't do better for the very reasonable price!

  • My stay at Pat and John's Casita was everything I had hoped for and more. It is a quiet little place in a nice area, it's about a 20 minute walk from the main town. At the casita you will have every accommodation, even things like a dryer which is unusual for Costa Rica. I was also surprised to find that I could pick oranges and lemons from the trees on their property, which made for a delicious drink using their juicer. Not much more to say, very nice place if you're looking for a relaxing time in one of the lesser-visited towns in Costa Rica.

  • From the time I arrived in Costa Rica Pat & John were wonderful hosts. They picked me up at the airport, gave me lots of information about the town & things to do, good places to eat. They are always helpful when you need them & a pleasure to chat with. The Casita is great, very comfortable & really enjoyed the pool especially since it has no chemicals. Their little dogs Goose & Randy are adorable & always happy to see you...Would recommend Casita Limon to anyone..

  • As another gentleman commented, I'm almost afraid to tell the world how wonderful Pat and John Wegner are! I will definitely plan to return to Casita Limon-- my time there was beyond description-- I'm just hoping that once folks find out about the Casita, I'll still be able to get a booking! John and Pat are amazing hosts-- delightful, genuine, interesting-- and their knowledge of Costa Rica is a treasure. They were so helpful in so many ways. Their suggestions, comments and advice were of great value-- whether it was about a day trip or the best place to buy produce. Just having their input took so much of the potential tension out of a new place. As a result, my time in Atenas was idyllic.
The Casita is fantastic-- big enough, without being overwhelming. Yes, there is AC, but I never needed it. And the shower is HUGE! In short, I consider it my home away from home.
All this, and the Wegner's have just added a pool! Yes, John and Pat and their Casita make for the perfect get-away!

Jody, thank you so much for the glowing review. It will always be a pleasure to be your hosts on future visits. We really appreciate the feedback you gave us on how to improve the Casita. As you know, we already purchased the safety rail for the shower and we are looking into the addition of a screen door.

    Best always,
    Pat & John

  • I approach this reservation!

You see, I am going to tell you that John and Pat are the best hosts...with the neatest little Casita...for the best price (value) and by the quaintest little city (Atenas)...and what are you going to do? You're going to read it and book a reservation!

    So you see the problem.

More reservations from you guys means less availability for me. Now THAT is a real problem!!! (Kidding of course)

In spite of that fact... I will say this. If this is your first trip to CR... this is where you stay. If this is a return trip to visit Atenas... this is where you stay. If your looking for accommodations that are as private as you wish... this is where you stay.

Its a simple cab ride from the airport, and you will be in another world. There is no better value...period Most Sincerely, David Manheimer. Feel free to em me and I will tell you more. (email hidden)

  • The accommodations alone would merit five stars, but John and Pat made our stay better than we could have imagined. My wife and I visited Costa Rica with the idea that we might want to relocate there someday, and the Wegners were kind enough to share their experiences and answer all our questions.

The casita had a very comfortable bed, a hot water shower, wireless internet and a washing machine. It even had an air conditioner, but we never had a need for it.

When we weren't exploring downtown Atenas, we spent quite a bit of time relaxing/reading books in the awesome rancho.

    Pura vida.

  • John & Pat were awesome. The Rancho was the jam. And the casita was perfect. Our favorite part...the washing machine! Thanks for all your help! Also, while you're in Atenas you have to do the El Toledo Coffee Tour.

I spent most of my 20s here in Costa Rica. I returned to the States to raise a family and build a career, always knowing I would return to Costa Rica someday. In 2011, my husband John and I officially retired and moved to Atenas. The first year we lived in our humble casita, while we watched our new home being built. In May of 2012, we moved into "la casa grande" and now our casita is available as a short term vacation rental. ☛ For potential Guests reading this profile prior to submitting an inquiry on Casita Limón: ☚ Our property listing will provide detailed information about our Casita and our "House Rules."
