Private room 12 miles west of NYC#1

House - Private room · Madison Avenue, Montclair, NJ 07042, United States

The Space

2 night minimum stay during Super Bowl Week.

This is a 5 bedroom home from which most of my 4 children have gone. I have 2 bedrooms to let, each one sleeps 2 people, Check "other listings" at bottom right. Each room is priced the same and each room sleeps 2 people.Contact me about pricing for longer stays.

This listing is for D's Room - a queen size Ikea bed, very comfy. It has a bit of floor space and one extra person can fit if necessary, like a child. It is on the 3rd floor which has a second bedroom,(JR's Old Room), and a bathroom which you will share if both rooms are occupied. Sheets & towels provided..

You have use of the common rooms, kitchen, living room, dining room, and you can keep food in my fridge, and cook if you like. There is FIOS internet but no TV. :( I work a full time job so don't provide breakfast other than coffee of tea.

My neighborhood is a quiet, diverse suburb with trees and uneven sidewalks. The train station is about a 15 minute walk and gets you to NYC in 35 minutes for $12.50 round trip. There's a bus stop nearby too. Montclair has tons of restaurants with a wide range of prices and palettes. Most are BYOB. My immediate neighborhood has a Chinese take out, pizza joint, and Caribbean take out so if you arrive starving, food is immediately available. The 15 minute walk to the main drag brings you to lots of shops, antique stores, a museum and coffee shops. There's a University at the far end of town.

I'm pretty laid back. I will make recommendations on things to see and do in NYC. I work full time but will be happy to chat at days end and hear about your adventures. I rarely see my guests in the morning and don't provide breakfast as I'm already gone. My husband and 26 year old son live here too and April, the cat.

  • It's such a pleasure to stay with Betsy. The room is always ready and clean, and there is great communication about coming and going. Thanks Betsy!

  • I stayed with Betsy for 2 weeks for an elective rotation. The area is very nice and safe. Montclair is a cute neighborhood with lots of restaurants. Betsy and her husband are great hosts; very accommodating and warm people. I would definitely go back.

  • Room was spacious and comfortable, it has access to a shared but relatively private bathroom, and was clean and comfortable. Betsy is very nice, and a very approachable/friendly host, and her cat is equally nice. The location in montclair provides great access to the montclair region and I felt very safe during the stay.

  • Betsy and her husband were wonderful host. Betsy was out when we arrived but had left us a list of nearby places to eat. Her husband greeted us, moved our car from the street to the driveway when we came back in for the night, and was overall quite helpful. I highly recommend this inexpensive but clean and delightful room in a lovely neighborhood.

  • Betsy is a very understanding, very accomodating host. Her rooms are always clean, airy...the bathroom is small but comfortable. I had to make a change in my plans and Betsy was, once again, accomodating. I am very comfortable when I visit -- and in this case, I visited twice in one week.

  • Very friendly and welcoming reception. Betsy is terrific and very helpful. Nice street, quiet. 3rd floor room, clean, comfortable; shares bath with another room. Have stayed multiple times and can recommend it.

    October 2013
  • Though we never met Betsy, and she tried even given our hectic late-night wedding schedule, the rest of her family at least Jay and John, took care of us, and made us feel very welcome. The room was nice and clean, internet worked without a hitch, and John was able to equip us with taxi service in the area. Access to the house at all hours was easy, and for the most part we kept to ourselves. I wish we had more time to meet and greet, but we were very happy with our stay regardless.

  • Clean and lovely place in a quiet neighborhood. Betsy is a friendly and open-minded host. The room and the bathroom were even better than I expected after seeing the pictures. I can definitely recommend staying at Betsy's place.

  • Betsy was very accommodating with my busy work schedule. She is very thoughtful and kind. The room has homey feeling and is always nice and clean. The house is lovely and sits in a nice, quiet and safe neighborhood. Lots of nice restaurants in the area with good variety. Very nice park and golf course nearby. Train station nearby to NYC. I would definitely recommend Betsy's place for vacay!!

About
I am traveling and will have limited internet access until June 4th. All inquiries will be answered then. Thanks for understanding. I have hosted over 60 guests at my home through another online program. Most have been 20 or 30 something backpackers but the occasional 65 year old with a free spirit has also found their way to my home. An increased number of no shows and last minute cancellations has led me to try something new. I hope I've kept my prices low enough to continue to attract this clientele. I work full time at a church Sunday thru Thursday so I can't really show you around but I can recommend things to see and do in New York City as well as New Jersey. I have four grown children, hence the empty rooms, although one has returned for an undetermined amount of time. My husband and cat also share the hosting. We're pretty laid back. I love quilting, and pretend I like working in the yard. My husband likes sailing and doesn't even pretend yard work is interesting. The cat likes to go in and out of the house all day, but we are not neurotic cat lovers. If you are looking for a quiet place in the suburbs after a day of exploring New York City, you will be comfortable here.
