Description

The space

My home is a cozy 2 story cottage on the Leadenwah Creek, 19 miles southwest of downtown Charleston, SC. My bedroom & bath are downstairs. There are 3 bedrooms upstairs & a shared bath area. One of those bedrooms with a queen bed is featured for rent on this site. We have an outdoor shower with hot & cold water. The television is in the living room with 8 channels, including the major networks, & Apple TV featuring Netflix. Wireless internet is included.

Please note that I have 4 listings. Ruby Ranch - Marsh Bedroom offers a full-sized bed; Ruby Ranch - Twin Bedroom has twin beds. The 4th listing is The Ruby Ranch, if you desire to rent my entire home. If you have extra people, I also offer a comfortable couch, window seat, bed swing & double chaise for fetching a good night's rest. There will be a $25/night charge for extra sleepers in these spots.

My kitchen and living area is to be lived in as if it's your own. Meals taken on the porch overlooking the Leadenwah Creek are peaceful and relaxing. My washer and dryer are available for you, also.

Enjoy the quiet peace that Wadmalaw and my 10 wooded acres afford you. Take a free tour through the woods & neighboring cemetery accompanied by my 4-legged guides, Stella & Hawkeye. (A belly-rub tip is greatly appreciated.) Swim, kayak, fish, enjoy the sunset from my private dock. Enjoy our 1 single & 1 tandem kayak for exploring the creek or fishing. If it's cool, have a bonfire. Fresh eggs, compliments of Sammy, Rosie & Maggie, are available & encouraged. Country amenities abound at my home.

My birder visitors have exclaimed about the rookery, laden with no less than a dozen white egrets, existing in a tall, droopy tree jutting out from a hunk of mud in our marsh. This lush marsh, tidal creek and mud out my front door draw a variety of fowl, including Snowy & Great Egrets, Clapper Rails, Tri-Color Herons, Roseate Spoonbills and Red-Tailed Hawks, to name a few.

Your drive to nearby historic plantations is a tree-lined, country delight without city traffic. The same is true for day trips to the resort islands of Kiawah and Seabrook. John's Island is right next door with many relaxing activities, including horseback riding & farmers' markets. Our own Wadmalaw has America's only tea plantation and a local winery boasting the popular Sweet Tea vodka.

Folly Beach is a 24 mile drive. Kiawah's Beachwalker Park is 22 miles. This is owned & operated by Charleston County Parks and is a lovely drive on an oak-canopied country road.

Guest access

Entire home, grounds and dock are available for our guests to enjoy; canines & chickens included.

Interaction with guests

My interaction with guests depends on my work and social schedule. Often I hardly see my guests at all, but sometimes we share meals together on the porch.

Other things to note

We have 2 friendly dogs, 4 friendly chickens. Your dog is welcome at our house, as well.

Please, no smoking house or porches.

I traveled to South Carolina with high expectations and I was not disappointed. I wanted to see things I've only read about such as the Sunrise over a grassy Marsh... moonlight from a dock way out in a creek... dolphins and dogs ...wide Southern porches and gracious southern hospitality. From my Big fluffy bed I had a view of grand Southern Oaks dripping with Spanish moss... we enjoyed Bloody Marys on comfy wicker porch rockers... when we ventured out everything was 20 minutes away ...we went to Charleston... we went to the plantation ...we went to the beach... we ate at divey Seafood joints... and on each return home we were welcomed by adoring Pups! I can't name my favorite thing but if I had to it would be Fran's gracious and welcoming spirit. I really enjoyed everything about her and her home..

A lovely home, that Fran lets you use as if it was your own. Pick up your groceries before you get there, and you have full use of Fran's kitchen. It is remote and quiet, with a lovely waterfront view, a perfect place to watch a beautiful sunrise. Johns island is about a 15 minute drive for shops and a few restaurants if needed. Ruby Ranch is a perfect place to relax and distress, we just wished we could have stayed longer. The friendly dogs and fresh eggs are an added bonus!!!

A truly beautiful place. You can tell Fran has put a lot of love into her home & loves to have visitors. She even watched our pup for us when we went into Charleston for the evening. We will definitely be going back!

What a wonderful, welcoming host and a beautiful home! Fran was incredibly accommodating and gave us advice on things to do nearby, where to get great local food, and the best times to go kayaking in the creek. We also enjoyed the fire pit in the backyard, having our coffee on the dock, and taking in the gorgeous views from the porch. It was an easy drive to downtown Charleston but also secluded enough to feel so peaceful and relaxing. Can't wait to visit again!

If I could give 6 stars I would. The property was perfection -- such a nice blend of relaxed and upscale. The porches are HUGE with great views, the beds are comfortable, the art is beautiful, the kitchen is amazing. There is a lovely fire pit outside with chairs to enjoy, as well as a long dock that stretches out to a sitting area over the marshes for bird watching and kayaking. I have never been a fan of staying in a home WITH the owner, but Fran is a HUGE exception. She is LOVELY. A great mix of social (she invited us out to the fire to have wine with her, and we watched some Netflix with her and had great conversation) but she also wasn't in our hair ... she just let us be and was accommodating in every way. She felt like family to me. Very very comfortable presence and her dogs were so nice to have around; they played with mine on the property -- wonderful! We were the only ones staying there but I could see this place being perfect for a group of 6 (3 bedrooms with a shared/partially private bathroom, meaning 2 toilets have their own doors, as does one bathtub.) It would be a great place for a girls getaway or two close couples with kids. Or even 3 couples! Fran let us use her kitchen and fresh eggs from her chickens. We made fresh cocktails and sat out on the porch as we grilled our dinner. It was divine. Great porch furniture to lay on to read a book or daydream.... Just an overall great experience. And with all the nice touches (water and glass by the bed), ample towels, ample dishes, etc you want for nothing. I can't say how great this place is. Beautiful, well decorated with art and photos -- you get a window into her life and family and we appreciate that very much. We just can't wait to get back and spend more time there.

We had the most wonderful time during our stay in Fran's home. Not just because of her beautiful house and it's location, but also because Fran was a wonderful host and took great care of us! Our dog loved hers and it made our time even more joyful.

I was born and raised in Estill, SC and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS in Nursing. I work at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC in Cardiac Surgery. Getting home to my comfy cottage in the woods, on the creek is the best! I am a single, empty-nester with bedrooms to spare.
