Rest Awhile Wadmalaw Style

House - Private room · Tacky Point Road, Wadmalaw Island, SC 29487, United States

The Space

My home is a cozy 2 story cottage on the Leadenwah Creek, 19 miles southwest of downtown Charleston, SC. There are 4 bedrooms with mine downstairs & 3 upstairs. One of those bedrooms is featured for rent on this site. There is a television in the living room with 10 channels, including the major networks, but no cable. Wireless internet is included.

If you have a 3rd person or a child or two and prefer not to rent both bedrooms, I also offer a comfortable couch, window seat, bed swing & double chaise for fetching a good night's rest. There will be a $15/night charge for extra sleepers in these spots.

My kitchen and living area is to be lived in as if it's your own. Meals taken on the porch overlooking the Leadenwah Creek are peaceful and relaxing. My washer and dryer are available for you, also.

Enjoy the quiet peace that Wadmalaw and my 10 wooded acres afford you. Take a free tour through the woods & neighboring cemetery accompanied by my 4-legged guides, Moose & Ted. (A belly-rub tip is greatly appreciated.) Swim, kayak, fish, enjoy the sunset from my private dock. If it's cool, have a bonfire. Fresh eggs, compliments of Sammy & Maggie, are available & encouraged. Country amenities abound at my home.

My birder visitors have exclaimed about the rookery, laden with no less than a dozen white egrets, existing in a tall, droopy tree jutting out from a hunk of mud in our marsh. This lush marsh, tidal creek and mud out my front door draw a variety of fowl, including Snowy & Great Egrets, Clapper Rails, Tri-Color Herons, and Red-Tailed Hawks, to name a few.

Your drive to nearby historic plantations is a tree-lined, country delight without city traffic. The same is true for day trips to the resort islands of Kiawah and Seabrook. John's Island is right next door with many relaxing activities, including horseback riding & farmers' markets. Our own Wadmalaw has America's only tea plantation and a local winery boasting the popular Sweet Tea vodka.

Folly Beach is a 23 mile drive. Kiawah's Beachwalker Park is 22 miles. This is owned & operated by Charleston County Parks and is a lovely drive on an oak-canopied country road.

  • You can not put words to describe how relaxing and peaceful this setting is... The view from our porch was amazing! We slept with the porch doors open and fell asleep to the sounds of the marsh.

Fran was a great host and a very nice person! We really hope that we will be able to come back and stay for longer next time to enjoy some of the amenities of the house and area!

Thank you Fran for allowing us to stay in your home!

  • This a magical place that offers a truly romantic retreat. The house is very beautiful, the bed is a delight with an amazing view out to the private dock. We even enjoyed the fresh eggs from her two playful hens, and had breakfast on her big beautiful porch. We are definitely planning on coming back. The nice tub to soak is an added bonus. Fran's energy and kindness is simply wonderful.

    Response from Fran:

Gee, thanks, Amalia. I adored having you and Bruno and look forward to your return. You are both delightful young adults and welcome here anytime. So glad you enjoyed our home.

  • Ruby Ranch was a BEAUTIFUL place that cannot be described in words that would suffice. It is exactly what the pictures present and more. It was a therapeutic get-away filled with all the beauty nature has to provide. Although Fran was not home, she still made sure to check up on us and be sure we did not need anything and if we did have any questions, she got back to us in an adequate amount of time. We ended up spending more time at the house than we thought we would because we enjoyed being there so much! I highly recommend this place as we hope to make a trip back in the future as well :)

    Response from Fran:

Kaitlynn and Chelsea are the first guests I have had who actually CLEANED my house before leaving! This included washing/drying linens, emptying the dishwasher among many other chores. They also fed my pets. Plus, they were considerate enough to turn the thermostat down since leaving an empty house. These college students painted 2 wonderful paintings while on my porch and left them as gifts for our home. There's not much more one can add to that. Wonderful girls -- please come back anytime!

  • Fran was a superb host. Even with family in town, she was more than accommodating to our in-and-out schedule and graciously offered to dog-sit (twice!). We had great privacy upstairs in the guest room and felt right at home downstairs eating and being with everyone. Five stars is a most fitting rating.

  • Fran was wonderful and did all she could to make us feel at home. We loved her beautiful place nestled by gorgeous wetlands just outside of Charleston. We also enjoyed our late night tall with Fran on her covered porch while gently swinging in her large swinging chair. Can't wait to visit Fran again next time we're in the area.

  • There is a selfish part of me that wants to preserve this piece of paradise for myself, but I wouldn't want anyone to miss the opportunity to experience a stay with Fran. From the minute we drove up to the house, I felt like we were visiting an old friend. Fran and her beautiful home are so welcoming and both make you feel immediately comfortable. The window seats, wide porches, breathtaking views, and easy conversation beg you to stay a while. Walking down the long pier surrounded by glassy water and wildlife with Ted and Moose in tow, is sure to calm your soul. Our room was very comfortable and we loved being able to watch the sun rise over the marsh while lying in bed. Fran is the ultimate host and really thinks of everything you might need, from band-aids to bug spray. This wonderful house which she designed and decorated herself is such a reflection of her fun and giving spirit. We are so happy to have met our new friend and we will definitely be back. We can't wait!

  • Fran was a warm and generous host. Extremely responsive and thorough with her communication, delightful and friendly in conversation, and quite thoughtful and accommodating throughout the entire stay. I arrived on my own and had no trouble accessing the home, which is simply gorgeous. Her two dogs greeted me enthusiastically and we explored the property a bit. Dusk on the pier that leads way out into the wetlands is a magical experience, and Moose might even entertain you with a swim. Highly recommended to anyone looking for an authentic local experience and some good conversation. I know where I'll stay the next time I'm in town.

  • We had an absolutely AMAZING stay at Fran's lovely home. Her home was gloriously spacious and immaculately designed and decorated; it was only natural for us to make ourselves right at home instantly. I think what we enjoyed absolutely the most is the personal pier right in her backyard. the view from there at dawn is gorgeous; the water is perfectly still not a single soul is stirring, and when the sun rises it looks like a tranquil sea of fire; such an experience can only be weakly emulated in Hollywood movies. Fran herself is a most gracious host who smiles the sincerest smile and genuine curiosity of any possible altercations (there is nothing that she could possibly have changed; our visit was perfect) to make our stay all the more enjoyable. i plan on visiting again next summer, but i fear that by then she would have become so famous on airbnb that i might not get a spot!

    Response from Fran:

The Cha family was delightful. They fully embraced the country/creekside life, taking advantage of the amenities our lowcountry has to offer. I enjoyed watching them reap the benefits of our bountiful creek, catching crabs and clams, swimming and kayaking. They made a delectable Korean meal over which we chatted and got to know each other.

  • Awesome!!

It was my great pleasure to have Arin and Tiny visit my home again. I hope they come back. Tiny should consider teaching cute doggie classes.
