The Space

Enjoy this comfortable room in our West Philly home. Easy to get to on mass transit (walking distance to both the 34 trolley or El/Blue line). Come and go as you please. Last minute and late arrivals ok.

Our neighborhood has lots of great qualities - we are walking distance to a local food co-op, Farmers Market, playgrounds/parks, and many community/arts spaces (Rotunda, A-Space, Calvary, Studio 34 ), several nice cafes including several with vegan options, and great reasonably-priced and delicious restaurants (including Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Laotian/Thai, Middle Eastern/Halal, Indian, and American). We can suggest local events to check out during your visit! We have materials for you with information about our neighborhood restaurants, shops, and community spaces. Our neighborhood is an easy 15 minute trolley ride from downtown.

We have two very friendly cats who would be happy to snuggle with you, if you let them.

The room has two windows, a queen sized bed, a desk with books and office supplies, and a dresser for your clothes. A/C in summer, heat and space heater in winter. Guest room is stocked with several books about visiting Philadelphia. The room has a tv with international satellite (Sorry, but the English options on that tv are pretty limited. Mostly Arabic tv stations). We have wifi internet access.

Plenty of free street parking.

We especially welcome international travelers - Aziz speaks English, Arabic, French, limited Spanish and limited Italian.

Babies/small children are welcome to stay in room with parent(s) if you want to share the bed. (We have a sweet toddler, and she will share her toys!)

No smoking in our home, but we have a front porch you can smoke/hang out on. Enjoy the very authentic Philly experience of hanging out on a row house porch!

Guest Access

Free wi-fi, an iron, empty dresser for your clothes and place to hang items that need to be hung up. Towels, shampoo and soap also available!

Interaction with Guests

We will generally be around/present during a guest's stay, and of course want to greet you and make sure you have everything you need. We are happy to help with restaurant/sight-seeing suggestions, but otherwise we will let you go about your business.

The Neighborhood

We have a binder full of things related to our neighborhood - lots of things happening here all the time. But it's hard to beat Clark Park on a warm Saturday - for the food trucks, farmers market, playground, dogs, kids with swords playing roleplaying games, playground, soccer, volleyball and basketball…plus whatever festival might be happening that day!

Getting around

Easy to get to using the 34 trolley or the 52nd Street El stop (a slightly longer walk, but still reasonable). Plenty of free street parking. Coming from the airport you're going to want to use a taxi. Technically you can get here using mass transit from the airport, but unless you are on a REALLY tight budget, I recommend a taxi. It will cost about $20-$25 NOT using the flat airport taxi rate.

  • I highly recommend this place. Aziz and Melanie are very welcoming hosts. Basma is a smiley baby and quiet. Wonderful family! There are many good restaurants at walking distance. The house is very confortable and clean, the room also very clean and quiet! I highly recommend this place to everyone and I'll come back!

  • We stayed 5 nights at Aziz's place. The whole family (including the cats!) were extremely welcoming. The room was very clean, had A/C and quiet. We felt very comfortable using this as our temporary home as we hunted for our own place in University City. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for an extended stay in the area for a great price and comfort.

  • Aziz and Melanie were wonderful and their daughter was the sweetest. I'm a 5'1 Female and felt totally comfortable being in this neighborhood. I stayed with a female friend and the room was ample. There was also plenty of street parking in front of the house. The mornings were happy and quiet so no worries about the little one. The cats were very friendly. There is a farmer's market on Saturday mornings about a 20 minute walk away in Clark Park and another park about 2 blocks away full of playground equipment. I have two friends and their families who live within 5 blocks of this house and had no worries walking around the neighborhood. Plenty of options for transit and quickly hoping on a freeway ect.

The hosts were great to check in to see if we needed anything and had information available about the area so we could quickly look up a place for coffee or dinner.

I recommend the Gold Standard on Baldwin & 48th. Super tastey!

I look forward to staying here again with my future travels to Philly and I hope you do too.

  • Thank you for your hospitality. We really appreciate your effort to meet all our needs during our visit to Philadelphia . The place was clean and very quiet. Close to Shopping Center and only five minutes drive to the University. We recommend others to stay in your house.

    Thank you

  • Mr. and Mrs. Akabouche are so nice and willing to help. They help my parents to move their luggage, and even taking us to the Marriott hotel on 9/2 morning, which is very convince and comfortable.

  • If you are unfamiliar to West Philadelphia and are looking for a very reasonable rate with superb hosts that ensure you are comfortable with navigating the public transit and specific areas to visit, a stay here should be considered. Walking along Baltimore Ave, W 52nd, or a quick trolley ride into Center City will provide plenty of venues for eateries, shopping, museums, parks, and more without dealing with a car. Philadelphia is unique and rewarding with its many cultures, traditions, history, and many public parks and venues.

  • Aziz, Melanie, and Basma were terrific! He ensured our schedules synched in order to be at his home to greet us when we arrived. Learning of Aziz and Melanie's experience in Philadelphia area was valuable. They were very gracious in sharing their home with convenient usage of kitchen and bath facilities. Having wifi available was a plus. Their neighborhood is situated right near West Philadelphia's main street, 52nd Street. The majority of venues on 52nd and nearby Baltimore Ave corridor can be walked to. Hospitality defined. Throughout visit Melanie and Aziz ensured our comforts.

  • Aziz, Melanie, their lovely daughter Basma, and their adorable cats Spero and Marshmallow made our stay at their place enjoyable and unique. Their house is very comfortable and they are very accommodating. The room was well organized and clean. We were provided with a listing of places to check out in the neighborhood. Aziz and Melanie were very helpful and friendly. Basma is very social with a lovely smile, yet she never was noisy. The two cats are very friendly as well and Spero loves to be petted! The house is close to transportation, only 15 minutes from the city center, and within walking distance to Yummy food and UPenn campus. The immediate neighborhood is quiet and we didn't have problems despite walking back home late at night (we used common sense too :-) ).

Overall, a great experience, and would definitely recommend it if you want a cheap, clean place with friendly owners that is not far from city center!

I am a stay-at-home dad with my darling baby girl, Basma. Her name means "Smile" and she lives up to the name. I am an immigrant from Morocco, and I speak Arabic, Moroccan (Darija), French and English fluently. I speak/understand a little Spanish and Italian. I've lived in Philadelphia for 13 years and can advise you on area attractions and restaurants (including vegan options). I enjoy soccer, and have coached on the local youth soccer league. My wife, Melanie, is an activist and is connected to the local social justice community. She worked at a local homelessness non-profit before she started at her current position at the Philadelphia School District. We plan to use the Airbnb funds we raise to buy my mom a plane ticket from Morocco to Philly so she can hang out with her grandchild! It's a worthy cause! :)
