The Space

Nestled in the very back of our backyard amid the cacti and bamboo, this sun-filled 1 bdrm, 1 bath cottage comfortably fits two. Enjoy spitting-distance access to UT, downtown Austin, I-35 and the MetroRail, as well as the restaurants, coffee shops, food trailers and parks of the eclectic Eastside Cherrywood neighborhood. Or just laze about on our hammock.

It's accessible through our driveway or a gate on the other side of our yard, giving you complete privacy to you come and go as you like. The queen-sized Murphy bed folds up to give even more space. Other features include a lots of window space with blinds, a large desk/table, 24/7 WIFI access, and a mini-fridge, microwave and coffeemaker. And of course, AC (as well as heat for the one week of the year it's cold here).

We're located in the tree-lined French Place section of Austin's eclectic Cherrywood neighborhood, near campus and very central. Downtown is only a few minutes away by car, bus or train. You'll have an easy two-block walk to assorted coffee shops, groceries, liquor stores, taco joints and food trailers, as well as a fair share of well-reviewed restaurants. You can hop-skip to the bus or drive in under five minutes to the nearest MetroRail station (a must during SXSW or ACL, when parking downtown is impossible).

We'll work with you on check in-and-out times. Our two large cats will work with you on any feline needs. (Though they're not allowed in the space, so if you're allergic, don't worry.)

Parking is a breeze on the street with no restrictions or permits required.

Check In
  • I had a great time at Steve's place. We stayed for the weekend, checking in at lunch on Friday and out Sunday morning. We were pleased to be greeted by Steve, who was friendly enough to give us some good recommendations for things to do in the city.

The place was exactly what we were hoping for--a good spot to hang out in between our adventures in the city. We felt as though we had the place completely to ourselves, since it was tucked well behind the house in the back yard. The neighborhood was about as nice as you can ask for, that close to a big city, and we always felt safe.

I would definitely recommend Steve's place for short getaways, where most meals will be dined out.

  • Our entire experience was fantastic. This cottage is convenient, clean, and secluded.

To start off, our flight was first cancelled and then delayed, and Steve was very flexible with the check-in time.

The location is perfect for most tourist things in Austin. We spent one day walking around the capitol area (less than 10 minute drive). Another day we walked around the UT campus (less than 5 minute drive). We went down to the Butler Trails around Lady Bird Lake multiple times (5-10 minutes away depending on where you park), and of course we spent time at Barton Springs and Zilker (10 minute drive).

The room was clean and Steve even stocked it with a few comfort items for us to use. The room is small but the murphy bed makes smart use of the space. All of the cabinets look gorgeous. There is a mini-fridge, microwave, and farm sink. Just be aware that there is not a full kitchen so plan accordingly. We ate yogurt and berries with granola every morning for breakfast, and then ate out for lunch/dinner (and of course we used the microwave to heat up leftovers).

We had absolutely no trouble the entire weekend, and felt like we had the entire backyard to ourselves. This is our new go-to Austin stay. Awesome place!

  • My husband and I are experienced travelers of air B&B, and this room, we agreed, was by far among the best. Our stay in Steve's backyard cottage was everything that we could've hoped for. While it felt kind of strange at first to walk through someone's backyard, the tiny one room house was adorable. The first thing we noticed was fresh baked cookies and bananas ready for us on the counter. There was also a unopened bottle of wine and two clean wine glasses on the counter. In the fridge in the morning we found breakfast, a really nice brand of yogurt with granola. The entire place was cleaning, tidy, hip, and looked like something straight out of a crate and barrel magazine. There was a mini fridge, and ironing board and iron, a kitchen sink, several dishes, bug spray, A coffeemaker, coffee, a table to do work, recommendations for nearby restaurants and places of interest, more than two towels per person, a nice reading lamp by the bedside, and pretty much everything else that you could think of that you might need. The whole place was very private. And even though the whole place is one room, two people could find privacy to get dressed behind a large wall that divides the bed area from the rest of the place. On our way out, we met Steve. Steve himself was really nice, and according to my Texan husband, seemed to be a "true austenite." :D

  • Steve was a friendly and gracious host who went above and beyond to make sure we had a comfortable stay. The space was perfect -- well appointed, comfortable, and private. Coffee and light breakfast options were left for us, and Steve even baked us some delicious cookies and left us a bottle of wine. We had a great time at the backyard cottage and would gladly stay again the next time we're in Austin.

The room is very cozy, clean, and private.

I definitely plan to stay here for future Austin visits!
