Casa Buena Vista is beautiful, clean, quiet, and safe. Located on a mountain top, you must drive up a winding and bumpy dirt road for about 10 min to reach it from Guiones. I personally loved the location; close to all the action but far enough that it's safe (petty theft is a bit of a problem in this area), and high enough where the house has a nice breeze. We didn't need to use the AC at all, and the temperature was in the high 90 's F every day (we were there late March/early April.) The house does have fans everywhere which help keep the house cool. We were never uncomfortable.
The view from the terrace is breathtaking. There are hammocks and a dipping pool, which is awesome on a hot day. The pool is small but perfect to lounge around in and cool off. Kind of like a large hot tub, but rectangular and cool lol. Everybody enjoyed the pool and it made a big difference.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to cook meals. The water dispenser on the fridge didn't work while we were there but the tap water is safe to drink, although it doesn't taste very good, kind of like well water. I had tap water in other places around town and it tasted better for some reason.
The beds are comfortable, the rooms are big, the bathrooms are nice and big, and one of the rooms has a huge walk-in closet, which was convenient.
There are howler monkeys close by that make a very scary and loud noise in the mornings and evenings, my son was a bit scared lol. Some days you don't really hear them though, but if you're a light sleeper, they will probably wake you up in the mornings.
Jay was an awesome host! He was extremely helpful and very nice. He gave us advice and helped us reserve ATVs. He let me borrow a beach towel for the duration of our stay so I didn't have to spend $20 to buy one (Nosara is very expensive, more even than the US). One morning he brought us a fresh melon that tasted incredible for no reason, just a nice gesture. He's lived in Nosara for more than a decade so he really knows his stuff and will help you any way he can to make your stay unforgettable.
I highly recommend staying in any one of Jay's villas, they are all nice and comfortable but the one where we stayed, casa buena vista, is by far the best. Of course it all depends on your needs, we had 6 people so we needed a larger space. I would stay there again in a second.
Also, Jay's daughter is very talented and makes very nice souvenir type art so be sure to ask to see them if you're interested in taking some gifts back with you.
The first part of this review will be for Jay, Penny and Chest because they really made our trip fantastic. The second part is about the actual space. Jay was fantastic from the beginning. Not only was he helpful when our group was first trying to find a place to stay he continued to be helpful to make our trip less stressful- from booking a shuttle from San Jose to Nosara, a rental car, and lining up our zipline tour. Once we got to Nosara everything continued to be amazing- Penny and Chester, the house managers were welcoming, helpful, and there to make sure our group had a great time. They were responsive when we had an issue with the stove and there to provide first hand advice on restaurants to check out and places to explore. We had 6 people in the Casa and it was perfect for our group. The kitchen is a great size for cooking group meals and the views are outstanding. If you are looking to stay at Buena Vista Villa's you should definitely consider renting a car, atv or side by side as it is a long dusty walk to most of what Nosara has to offer. The splash pool is private just for your group in the casa and it's perfect for watching the sunset, while the hammocks offer a perfect place to nap during the afternoons. We didn't explore the grounds much but we did enjoy hearing the howler monkeys each morning. One thing to note is that while there is a washer and dryer on the property it is not in the "casa" it self and is $10 per load.
Thank you, Nicole! Thanks so much for the very nice review and kind words. Your suggestion is noted. We really appreciate nice, friendly, easy going people... you guys helped make our jobs fun and worthwhile! You did well with your surf lessons and we hope you return again next year to build upon your skills and enjoy another tropical respite from the cold...

Our family, three young adults, my wife and I, spent 8 days in the New Year (phone number hidden) at La Casa Buena Vista. What a wonderful, peaceful, great place to be. La Casa commands a panoramic, fantastic view from the hill top. Whether at sunrise, sunset or during the dark night sky full of stars, the terrace is best place to be. Penny and Jay are great hosts and nice people. Penny made us a daily quick visit to check on our needs and make sure we were comfortable. She gave us suggestions of where to go and what to see. Penny is a pleasant person. Jay has a collection of surf boards in the house. In addition to rent them to us for a reasonable weekly price, he took the time to advise some of us, surfing novices, of the best boards and beaches to go surfing. Surfing was great and we all had one of the best New Year in a long time. My wife and I have in our minds to return to Casa Buena Vista in the future and we are recommending it with no reservations to our friends.
Jay has a lovely space! We were in the Honeymoon room and it was the perfect place to spend two relaxing evenings. I would recommend anyone stay here who wants to experience the beach but also have some solitude while staying in nature.
It was a great experience and a beautiful place to stay. It was nice to be a little secluded within the rainforest and still just a walk away from the town and beaches. We could have used a little more kitchen supplies since we tried to cook as often as we could. We were not famiar with the climate and were not able to get anything dry. We could have used a little help with a dryer or suggestions. Jay was around often to see if we needed anything. We enjoyed the surfing trip and appreciated the trip to the grocery store.
The apartment is great with large spacious rooms and a full kitchen, bathrooms off each bedroom and one bedroom has a walk in closet. Being situated on top of the mountain gives the deck an almost constant breeze, which is great in the hot and dry climate of Guanacaste. The plunge pool is wonderful for a cooling dip. My favorite place was the small hut on top of the house with a hammock and a 360 degree view.
The many stairs on the long staircase could be a serious problem for someone with issues of legs or knees.
Also, there is a serious water issue in the end of the dry season, we lacked water for 4 days during our stay.
Costa Rica is a very mountainous country with steep roads, and the roads in this area are horrendous with a lot of serious dust in the dry season - the road visibility can be as serious as the foot deep potholes. You definitely need a 4X4 vehicle.
