About this listing
Original cottage was built in 1928 for the writer sister of " the Colonel". Updated by us in 2005 to include a master suite, and to restore historic details. There is a gas insert in living room fireplace for " instant gratification" ( and safer fires), also 2 TVs with DirecTV including Premium channels and NFL Sunday ticket. The cottage has central air and heat for year 'round comfort. And "Four Seasons" Hendersonville has, indeed, four distinct seasons to savor and enjoy.
With 1000 sq. feet of living space there is ample room for an active family, or just more elbow room for a romantic couple. Not included in the square footage is a basement room with a full sized washer and dryer .
The cottage is part of a 26 acre estate, with fishing pond, lawns and hiking trail. There is ample parking between the barn and cottage for your car, van and/or camper.
If you are an early riser you might see deer cavorting on the lawn at dawn. Or ducks, geese and wild turkey anytime.
Guests have access to the pond, hiking trail, lawn...including a "4 hole" golf course (chip and putt...we keep a few clubs and a bucket of balls on hand for the use of our guests).
A croquet set is also available for anyone so inclined...
Other Things to Note
We are ideally located for exploring this area. Only 3 miles from Historic Hendersonville, a 20 minute drive to the Hendersonville/Asheville Regional airport, 50 minutes to Greenville Airport and 90 minutes to Charlotte.
As this is a "Mom & Pop" operation (mostly Mom) I would appreciate it if you would take your trash to the large bins at bottom of property.
Minimum stay - 2 nights
We accept dogs on a case by case basis…tell me something about your pet. Obviously house trained and friendly (we have 5 dogs in residence here) are a must. If accepted, the charge is an additional $10. per day.
Gayle and Jim are fabulous hosts who love their property and sharing it with others. We originally chose this place over others we saw listed on Airbnb because of the great reviews it received. We were not disappointed in the least. Great people!
We had come in to celebrate our daughter's wedding in her back yard a few miles down the road from Gayle and Jim's. When our daughter saw where we were staying and loved the grounds. Our hosts graciously offered the site for pre-wedding photos. Let's just say the photographer was excited to be able to take pictures here. We'll definitely be back.

We had a wonderful stay. Gayle and Jim were very friendly and welcoming and the cottage was indeed charming and well appointed. We hope to visit again.
I was tempted to not write a review so that next time I want to stay here it is not all booked up! However, I can not do that to Gayle. She was absolutely the best, her and her husband were very friendly and kind. They greeted us right away gave us a quick tour and then gave us plenty of space to explore and enjoy all the outdoor space.
I stayed there for a few days with my sister, niece and two children. We had such a great time there we did not want to leave. The cabin is cozy and perfect for five people. There is Direct TV so the little ones can get their cartoon fix, however there is plenty to do I had no desire to sit and watch TV.
Gayle has the cottage stocked with plenty of blankets, towels, kitchen stuff. All you need to bring is food and personal toiletries.
Gayle has a nice little collection of books and you can really see her character and great sense of humor looking at her collection. They had space to play four holes of golf; they had clubs and balls there you can use. We played lawn bowling (I think it has another name) and sat by the fire to make some smores. However, the best part is right at dawn when the fireflies come out and the kids run around like crazy trying to catch them (there are no fireflies were we live so that was a nice treat for us).
The one amazing thing about the cottage was the water pressure in the master shower. I was expecting a little small town drizzle but the shower head delivered a very satisfying powerful shower. Also, I loved the water there, when you wash clothes you don't even need fabric softener.
While there we went to sliding rock falls and looking glass falls at Pisgah Forest. It took less than 30 minutes to get there and the directions are super easy. There is also tons to do in nearby Asheville like The Biltmore Estate, lots of restaurants, shopping, Chimney rock ext ext.
I have stayed in many cabins in my time from the mountains of West Virginia to the forrest of northern Japan to Virginia's skyline drive and this one is by far my favorite.
We had such a pleasant time away at the cottage. The pictures and other positive reviews are indeed accurate. Everything was very clean, plenty of linens, and the kitchen was well equipped. The location was great as well. Far enough out to be quiet and restful, but close enough to make getting to places convenient. Gayle was a wonderful host; just the right balance of interaction and privacy. Highly recommend.
I'm afraid to post the truth about this place.
Afraid to add more competition next time we try to book it again!
Anyway, if you plan to spend some time hiking, biking, enjoying nature and waterfalls, you can't go wrong with this place & location.
Charming, upbeat atmosphere, good taste, well kept house and yard.
The cottage sits almost at the heart of Hendersonville, off 64 road, right in front of Hendersonville's mining attraction.
Close by we went a few times to Flat Rock, and other few times to Transilvania/Pisgah region, a 30 minute drive. Super.
The food. Naturally, we fixed the gourmet-style breakfast there, cereal and coffee. We could actually have cooked any thing we wanted since the kitchen is well equipped (except for not having a dish washer).
But we didnt regret skipping the kitchen, to explore the many restaurant options nearby. A couple of tips: the most overrated restaurant, in our opinion- West First Wood Fired, food and service didnt match its hype and reviews.
The most underrated: Marco Trattoria. Not exactly in Hendersonville, but worth the drive twice to Brevard.
Now the kids. While away, they kept asking "Let's go back home, to the cottage house". There, they could roam and run around the lawn, into the woods (actually the name of a play running at the Playhouse), a little bocce, play hangman with the chalkboard, sit on the boat at the middle of the lake, laugh.
Beautiful and quiet place, cosy cottage, friendly and helpful owners. Everything was perfect! Thanks
Gayle met us when we arrived at her charming country cottage. She showed us around her beautiful cottage and the surrounding grounds. We walked around the grounds and took a little boat ride in the pond.
The beds were comfortable and the amenities fantastic.
