The Space

This home sits 8000 feet above sea level and right beneath 4 fourteen thousand foot peaks. We derive all of our power from the sun and have LCD TV's and wireless internet connectivity. The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is right around the Blanca massif approximately 20 miles to the north. The Rio Grande River is directly to the west approximately 20 miles and Taos, New Mexico is due south about 78 miles. We have 6 ski areas within an hour and a half drive from here and some of the best fly fishing and elk hunting in the country. The views from here are simply amazing with the southern Sangre de Christo range sinking into the horizon about 100 miles to the south. The continental divide can be seen for approximately 100 miles across the San Luis Valley floor about 100 miles to the west. There is also a volcanic riff about 15 miles due west where the Rio Grande River intersects. If anyone is interested in climbing a 14er we have guided tours to the top of the 4th tallest peak in Colorado or tours up the more difficult and highly exposed Little Bear. Both of these tours require two days in the mountains so come prepared. The entire 2nd floor is available to our guests with a queen size bed on the 2nd floor and a king size bed on the loft under the skylights. This is an excellent spot for star gazing on moonless nights. Breakfast is included with your stay. Come get a taste of 8000 foot living off the grid powered by our sun.

  • We stayed here on our way to the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This place has lots of space... we had a 'office type area' where we watched the sunset then a bedroom and then another room above to enjoy star gazing. Breakfast was yummy!! (pancakes!!)

Author, derivative trader, designer and builder
Designer, builder, author, derivative trader and outdoor enthusiast. We write, blog, tweet and pin about self reliance and living off grid. We climb and guide people up the 14,000 foot peaks next to the house in the summer and sometimes visit the Great Sand Dunes about 20 miles to the north. Occasionally we drive to the south about 70 miles and visit Taos, New Mexico. We love to fly fish in the summer and snow ski in the winter. Come join us for a night or two and see how we live off the grid at about 8000 feet above sea level.
