The apartment itself was really nice, clean and good space. The exterior was a bit scary (a green metal door with graffiti), but once inside, it was just as the pictures show. New York is small and that's what you'll find, but the internet worked well, both beds were comfortable and once again, it was clean (very important in my opinion). Mike was helpful and even brought someone over to unlock one of the bedroom doors that was closed and didn't have a key (might want to consider changing those door handles). We were happy to be let back into the bedroom within a short amount of time.
We also really liked the location in the middle of Little Italy and Chinatown... I like a "hole in the wall" experience and that's what we got, restaurants and shops you could stop in and get a taste of New York with good subway access to several lines.
The apartment did have some serious shortcomings with noise and heat. The front bedroom has a permanently installed window unit that lets a lot of noise in from the street. Pair the plywood and A/C unit combo with a huge construction project on the street out front and it's REALLY loud. You can hear full conversations of those walking by. Not exaggerating.
We visited on a lovely weekend that resembled spring. No complaints about the weather, but the heat in the apartment can't be adjusted and it was REALLY warm. I'm one of those people who's always cold, but I was so hot the whole time we were there. We stayed outside most of the time and opened a window for a few hours before bed at night. We're talking serious heat. Because it was so warm outside, we really shouldn't have had a problem with those banging pipes, but.... They were horrible. I've lived in older homes with radiant heat and there's some knocking going on... this really sounded like someone was taking a baseball bat to the pipes about once each hour. One of our friends and a NYC local stopped by after dinner one night and commented on how loud it was. Unfortunately, as nice and clean as the apartment was, we slept horribly, waking up every time the pipes "rang." We always travel with white noise just in case, but it was pretty worthless and we arrived back home very tired travelers (my 2year old traveled with me and as anyone with a toddler knows, sleep is precious and having him wake up several times a night was not OK). I hate to post a bad review because this is something Mike can't change, but unless you can sleep through very loud banging, you're going to be lacking sleep as well.
TRANSLATION: We were in NYC on a family trip. The apartment is between Mike china town is not too far from little Italy East Village NOHO SOHO NoLita, and even can go to Wall Street by foot, walking. There are two metro stations in two blocks; Grand Street and Canal street, filled full of shops and restaurants, whether Italian or Chinese and explore NYC from china town was just a wonderful experience. For the apartment, everything is in the pictures, there was accomodités are all you need during the holidays, the TV WIFI internet, heating, air conditioning I saw the same as if we had to be especially heating (-9 to NYC the first day ;)) a small kitchenette for those who find time to cook in NYC, everything there was in the description of the apartment. One snag is the appearance of the building, it is outdated and has not been renovated from the outside, and there are traveaux front of the entrance, but do not be fooled by the exterior, it's a nice apartment, perfect for 4 people, 5 or 6 is a fair bit but it does the trick I think. Mike and Vanessa responded quickly to messages and contrived any small worries we had. They are available to give advice or if you need them ... There are only a call away... A great time and a great place and I can only recommend.
Mike was a great host and very easy to communicate with. He always answered my questions quickly and was very helpful! The apartment was great! Clean and spacious. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen fully equipped. It was a very good location!
I would defenitely stay there again and would gladly recommend it to others!
The host was professional, quick to respond, accommodated my late-night check-in, and was easy to work with in resolving problems I had with the apartment. So to be clear, this review is more of a reflection of the apartment as the host was very good.
My group and I arrived late at night in the midst of some extremely cold weather. The host was unable to meet us, but arranged for his friends to check us in for a $20 gratuity fee, which I was gracious for considering it was nearly 11pm.
However, the renovated apartment is in an old building within an old neighborhood. Combined with a recent snow storm and extreme cold, this caused some of the pipes in the building to freeze. So the toilet and bathroom sink did not work properly and portable heaters (provided) were needed to keep the apartment warm.
Luckily, the host understood why we did not feel comfortable with this situation and offered solutions to the problem. In the end, we altered the rental agreement to one night. I am thankful for the host's understanding and willingness to work with me to resolve my issues.
We had a wonderful stay in this apartment, despite an Arctic snowstorm and the pipes freezing in the bathroom! We found the apartment to be warm enough, even in a snowstorm. The location was excellent. The apartment has everything you need--a home away from home. The neighbourhood food options were exceptional. We especially loved the Italian ravioli shop a few metres away from the apartment. Mike is a kind and helpful host, as his assistant Amy who met us and let us in to the apartment. Highly recommended.
Staying at Mike's place was a great experience. The apartment is perfectly located (2 blocks from the subway) and furnished exactly as in the pictures. The beds and sofabed are really comfortable.
Mike was a helping host and reachable at any time during our stay.
Fantastica esperienza! Ci siamo trovati benissimo!
Super location. Small rooms but OK for a short stay for four people. A lot of street noise in the one bedroom. The heating and A/C setup is really substandard and should be changed. Loose A/C unit on wheels with exhaust pipes out windows is just not good enough. Both A/C and heating is very noisy. We had 23 C and freezing within a few days, so tested both. Heating produces loud noises in pipes the whole night. Hallway smelly and dark.
