A semi-private room in a cute and cozy shotgun house in the Marigny-Bywater, one of the best spots in New Orleans. 10 minutes from the French Quarter, 2 minutes from the Bywater, around the corner from great restaurants, bars, coffee shops and more.
The house is a classic shotgun, a very common style of architecture for homes here in New Orleans. We rent three rooms in our house (see our profile for links to the other rooms). Each room is arranged one behind the other. You will be walking through all of our bedrooms to get to your room, and while you'll have your room to yourself, people will need to walk through it to access the kitchen, other bedrooms, backyard, and bathroom. Please look through our photos to see the "blueprints" of our house, this will give you an idea to how it's laid out.
Your room is the third room in the house. It comes furnished with an XL twin size bed, a chair, clean sheets, fresh blankets, three pillows, and towels. The room accommodates one comfortably.
The house has six rooms including a bathroom with a clawfoot bathtub, and a large, brand new kitchen equipped with: a dishwasher, double sink, refrigerator, large island for eating/food prep/hanging out, and is well stocked with all the pots, pans, and cooking utensils you'll need to make a nice meal at home. You're also welcome to use our washer and dryer, located in the kitchen.
Interaction with Guests
Matthijs and I are two friendly, open-minded, creative folks looking to provide an affordable, clean, and comfortable space for travelers in one of the best neighborhoods in this great city. We are happy to help you plan an itinerary for your days if you tell us what you're interested in seeing. Our household is fluent in English and Dutch.
We love hanging out with guests who want to hangout. We love leaving guests alone who want to be left alone. If you want to go out on the town with us, let us know and if we're not staying in for the night we'll definitely join you. If you'd like to share a home-cooked meal, we are down!
We often have guests over for meals, and there are always friends coming and going. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
We have a chihuahua named Mister who is cute and cranky. He will leave you alone if you leave him alone. He likes to bark to announce your arrival home, and depending on the length of your stay, may become your new best friend.
Since November we have been fostering a larger dog named Huxley. He is very friendly and eager to please, but has some bad habits (like jumping up to greet people). We are working diligently to find him a new home, he may or may not be here during your stay.
Our location is probably our greatest feature. Our house is centrally located in the Marigny. Frenchmen St. jazz and music clubs are only six blocks away, the French Quarter is a ten minute, nine-block walk away in one direction, and the Bywater (neighborhood) is just over the train tracks, two blocks in the other direction.
We are one block from the 24 hour organic grocery store, and three blocks from the 24 hour convenience store (where you can stock up on alcohol and fried chicken). The always wonderful Flora's Coffee shop is two blocks away where you can get your coffee fix. There are seven bars within a three block radius, including Mimi's where you can hear live jazz during most week nights.
The Marigny-Bywater #5 bus line runs past our house towards the Bywater. One block over, on Royal Street, it runs towards the French Quarter and will take you as far as Canal at St. Peters. You can catch a streetcar Uptown or to Mid City from there. The #88 bus line also runs a few blocks away, which takes you a bit farther up Canal at S. Rampart.
Although the bus stop is around the corner, we always encourage our guests to walk everywhere. You'll see more and meet more friendly people just by walking.
Cab rides from our house are just a phone call away. We recommend United Cab. Catch a cab to our house pretty quickly from anywhere in the French Quarter or make a call to have them pick you up.
Other Things to Note
Q: Do you have wifi
A: YES! Airbnb should send you our wifi handle and password after you confirm the booking. If not, we've got it written down in the house.
Q: Is there free parking on the street?
A: Yes, parking in the Marigny is free. You can often nab a spot right around the corner, if not right out front.
Q: Is it safe to walk to and from the French Quarter at night?
A: We've never had a problem with it, at 3pm, at 9pm, at 5am, etc. That being said, walking with your DSLR hanging off your shoulder at 1am probably isn't a smart move, but that'd be true in any city. A cab from the French Quarter to our house will run $5-10 depending on the night.
Our house is your house. We want all our Airbnb guests to feel comfortable. Please make yourself at home here! Use the dresser to store your clothes, unpack your toiletries in the designated spaces in the bathroom, use our kitchen to cook all you want and store food in our fridge. This is New Orleans and we want you to enjoy it the same way we enjoy it; you can come and go as you please, whether you're in early or out late, as long as you keep quiet while passing through rooms with folks sleeping you'll be fine.
Guests are expected to keep noise at a respectable level after 10pm on weekday nights. This includes when using the kitchen and walking through other housemates bedrooms.
Guests are expected to clean up after themselves.
We don't allow smoking in the house, but we have a backyard and front stoop where you can smoke.
Guests must be comfortable with a small dog and his peculiarities. He barks (when someone knocks on the door or first arrives at our home), he can be cranky and doesn't want to be pet until he's made the decision to sit by you, he's also loving and playful once you get to know him. You may come home to find him laying in your bed (though we try to keep him from doing that).
Great stay. Clean and friendly. Walking distance to many points of interest, and all the necessities close. Wish I'd stayed longer.
Although I hadn't met them in person, I felt from the very first moment as if I arrived at friends' house. Both Katie and Matthijs are really nice, the location very good and price absolutely affordable. Everything was as described in their introduction; compared with the picture the bed is now more like ... canopy bedish with plywood walls, which adds some more privacy. Definitely a very good place to stay while one is in New Orleans.
Had a great time at there house. They made me feel welcome and helped me figure how to get around. Thanks!
Thank you for your hospitality! This was my first experience with airbnb and because of you I will keep looking for a places to stay. I would also return to your home if I am ever headed in that direction. It was a great surprise that the picture and what I got was upgraded! Nice!!! The place was clean and tidy. I loved the welcoming committee - "Mister" and his side kick [sorry, forgot his name]. I look forward to seeing what additional changes you bring in the future. The best to you!
Great location. Katie and Matt

Katie and Matthijs were super nice hosts and told me all the bets places go in their hood. Rent a bike from down the street and really take in the city. The room was perfect-both clean and quiet. Would def. come and stay with again.
Great location close to Frenchmen, French Quarter, Bywater, Esplanade. Close to food co-op and 24/7 food market. Hosts will share lots of great tips about where to go and what to see...
