The Space

Please read on so you know what our home is like:

----------------------------
About the House/Your Room:
----------------------------

The house is a classic shotgun, a very common style of architecture for homes here in New Orleans. Each room is arranged one behind the other. You will be walking through all of our bedrooms to get to your room, and while you'll have your room to yourself, people will need to walk through it to access the kitchen, other bedrooms, backyard, and bathroom.

Your room is the third room in the house. It comes furnished with a twin size bed, an empty dresser for your clothing, two chairs, clean sheets, fresh blankets, two pillows, and towels. The room accommodates one comfortably, two with an air mattress on the floor (or a couple could share the twin size bed). There is no door separating this room from the fourth room (but we do have a cute curtain up!)

----------------------------
Location and Neighborhood:
----------------------------

Our location is probably our greatest feature! Our house is centrally located in the very unique Marigny neighborhood. The Frenchmen St. jazz and music clubs are only six blocks away, the French Quarter is a ten minute, nine-block walk away, and the Bywater neighborhood (full of artists and musicians, interesting shops, restaurants, and general New Orleans weirdness) is just over the train tracks, two blocks away.

We are one block from the 24 hour organic grocery store, and three blocks from the 24 hour convenience store (where you can stock up on alcohol and fried chicken). The always wonderful Flora's Coffee shop is two blocks away where you can get your coffee fix. There are five bars within a three block radius, including Mimi's where you can hear live jazz during most week nights.

The house has six rooms including a bathroom with a clawfoot bathtub, and a large, brand new kitchen equipped with: a dishwasher, double sink, refrigerator, large island for eating/food prep/hanging out, and is well stocked with all the pots, pans, and cooking utensils you'll need to make a nice meal at home. You are welcome to use our washer and dryer, located in the kitchen.

FAQ:
----------------------------

Q: Do you have wifi
A: YES! Airbnb should send you our wifi handle and password after you confirm the booking. If not, we've got it written down in the house.

Q: Is there free parking on the street?
A: Yes, parking in the Marigny is free. You can often nab a spot right around the corner, if not right out front.

Q: Is it safe to walk to and from the French Quarter at (email hidden) never had a problem with it, at 3pm, at 9pm, at 5am, etc. Walk with confidence and I can't imagine anyone will bother you. Walking with your DSLR hanging off your shoulder at 12am probably isn't a smart move, but that'd be true in any city.

About Us:
----------------------------

Matthijs and I are two friendly, open-minded, creative folks looking to provide an affordable, clean, and comfortable space for travelers in one of the best neighborhoods in this great city. We are happy to help you plan an itinerary for your days if you tell us what you're interested in seeing. Our household is fluent in English and Dutch.

We love hanging out with guests who want to hangout. We love leaving guests alone who want to be left alone. If you want to go out on the town with us, let us know and if we're not staying in for the night we'll definitely join you. If you'd like to share a home-cooked meal, we are down! Our favorite part of Airbnb is the making friends part.

We have a chihuahua named Mister who will slowly but surely become your new best friend. We often have guests over for meals, and there are always friends coming and going. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

----------------------------
Public Transportation and Cabs:
----------------------------

If arriving in New Orleans via the airport, your quickest option would be to catch a cab. There are taxis waiting just for you outside the airport. According to United Cabs website: Airport rates are as follows: 1 or 2 passengers for only $33.00. 3 or more passengers is only $14.00 per passenger.

Cab rides from our house are just a phone call away. We recommend United Cab: (phone number hidden) or (phone number hidden). You can catch a cab to our house pretty quickly from anywhere in the French Quarter or make a call to have them pick you up.

The Marigny-Bywater #5 busline runs past the house towards the Bywater. One block over it runs towards the French Quarter and will take you as far as Canal at St. Peters. There are bus schedules in the top drawer of dresser in the second room. The #88 busline also runs a few blocks away and takes you a bit farther down Canal.

Although the bus stop is just around the corner, we always encourage our guests to walk everywhere. You'll see more and meet more friendly folks just by walking.

  • Very kind, laid back and helpful hosts in a superb location. Kevin was the host for most of my stay and made me feel right at home and Katie and Matthijs were great as well. No need of mine was unmet. The simple gesture of making a chalk welcome sign in my room says it all--you absolutely can't go wrong staying here.

  • My wife and I spent 2 nights at this lovely home and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Katie and Matthijs were out of town, but their friend Kevin was around to make us feel comfortable. The home is really clean and has all the basic amenities a tourist could ask for. The location is fabulous too! Its located in a safe and quaint neighborhood with no noise whatsoever. Having said that, its just a 15-20 min walk to the heart of the French quarter and the New Orleans' RTA public buses are accessible very easily.
A quick word of advice to those who are skeptical about shotgun style houses - well, they're amazing really! We just sat around, chilling with the other guests, just like family. It really does add to the experience, but then again, there are separators which ensure adequate privacy.
I highly recommend Katie and Matthijs' home if anyone plans to visit New Orleans!

  • I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this house. Matthijs and Katie's friend Kevin was a great host and very accommodating with my late check-in time. The neighborhood is an up-and-coming funky sort of place, but I'm quite experienced with New Orleans and expected no less than some really interesting character. I (young female) felt safe the whole time, but you should have some common sense. It's an easy walk to Frenchman St and the Quarter as well as the Bywater neighborhood. It's also near bus lines I believe, but I didn't use those. The room itself was nice, clean, and as-advertised. Like they describe, it's in the middle of the shotgun-style house, so expect other people to have to walk through it to/from the kitchen, bathroom, etc. This didn't bother me, but it's good to be aware of what to expect. If I travel alone to NOLA again, I would definitely consider staying here if possible.

  • Katie & Matthijs were out but their friend Kevin was around to help. He's been in NOLA for a while and knows his way around. The best thing about their place is, as they state, the location. Only a 15 minute walk to Frenchmen, Bourbon or the French Market and downtown isn't that much further away.

  • Staying at Marigny with Katie&Matthijs affordable room was a delight. If you are looking for a place just to stay for overnight which was simple but most important of all clean and safe I would recommend it highly. It was in a quiet authentic New Orleans street and close to all entertainment areas, which was a walking distance away what made it enjoyable.I thoroughly enjoyed it.

  • I stayed when Katie was out of town, so Kevin was my host. He was extremely friendly and helpful, he made my stay very easy and enjoyable. The house is awesome and in a great area. The shotgun thing is weird at first but I eventually enjoyed it because you could mingle a lot more with the other guests. Very cute backyard area too! 5 stars

  • Katie and Matthijs were away during my visit so I had Kevin as my host and really enjoyed my stay. He made sure I had everything I needed, was fun to chat with, and did a great job of maintaining the Airbnb. The room is really simple, but clean and comfortable and makes a great home base for exploring the city. It was a quick walk to the French Quarter, but the Marigny also has a few great restaurants to check out if you feel like eating closer to home (I recommend The Franklin, Oxalis, and Satsuma). Yes, the rooms lack privacy since other guests need to pass through to get from one end of the house to the other, but I didn't have any issues with this. Overall, it was a great experience, an amazing price, and I'd recommend their place to anyone interested in visiting.

  • Room was as described! Kevin was super relaxed and gave some awesome tips what to do in NOLA.

It's very nice to walk around the neighborhood and to the french quarter.

Highly recommend to everybody who's cool with the semi-pivacy!

  • This is a great place to stay! It may be a bit of a walk (20 minutes) to the French Quarter, but you get to see a lot of nice places in between. Super fast Internet, clean house, and new washer and dryer (in other words they work!) highly recommend!

  • Beautiful home in the heart of the city. Katie wasn't around but her friend Kevin hosted us for the night. He gave us information about the city and answered any questions we had. I'd recommend this location to any travelers that want to be near the cities famous jazz, because this is right between Frenchman and Bywater.

About
The forces of New Orleans, or just plain ol' coincidence, brought us together in late December 2012. We spent the past summer hitchhiking through Europe and are all kinds of excited to be back in New Orleans, running the sweetest little shotgun B&B in town. Matthijs is a musician from the Netherlands. Katie is an artist from New Jersey. Our household is fluent in English and Dutch. Please read the description of the room you're renting thoroughly, and give our reviews a little perusal so you get an idea of what our home is like. What happened to Arthur?: Arthur is back in France as his visa is up! He will be back soon.
