About this listing
Semi-private room* in a cute and cozy shotgun house in the Marigny. 15 minute walk to the French Quarter, 12 minutes to Frenchmen St., 2 minutes to the Bywater. Located around the corner from a few restaurants, bars, a coffee shop, and grocery store.
*Note, this room is yours and yours alone, but people have to walk through it to get to their room.
The house is a classic shotgun, a very common style of architecture for homes here in New Orleans. Our bedroom is the first room in the house, and we rent the next three rooms to guests (see our profile for links to the other rooms). Each room is arranged one behind the other. You will be walking through two bedrooms to get to your room, and while you'll have your room to yourself, people will have to walk past your room to access the kitchen, other bedrooms, backyard, and bathroom. Both doorways have doors which you can close for more privacy.
Please look through our photos to see the "blueprints" of our house, this will give you an idea to how it's laid out.
Your room is the third room in the house. It comes furnished with a built in bed, curtain for privacy, XL twin mattress, reading lamp, a chair, vanity with a large mirror, clean sheets, fresh blankets, four pillows, a towel, and a white noise machine to cancel out house noises. The room accommodates one comfortably.
The house has six rooms including a bathroom with a clawfoot bathtub, and a large, brand new kitchen equipped with: a dishwasher, double sink, refrigerator, dinner table, and is well stocked with all the pots, pans, and cooking utensils you'll need to make a nice meal at home. You're also welcome to use our washer and dryer, located in the kitchen.
Interaction with guests
Matthijs and I are two friendly, open-minded, creative folks looking to provide an affordable, clean, and comfortable space for travelers in one of the best neighborhoods in this great city. We are happy to help you plan an itinerary for your days if you tell us what you're interested in seeing.
We love hanging out with guests who want to hangout. We love leaving guests alone who want to be left alone. If you want to go out on the town with us, let us know and if we're not staying in for the night we'll definitely join you. If you'd like to share a home-cooked meal, we are down! The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
We have a chihuahua named Mister who is cute and cranky. He will leave you alone if you leave him alone, if you try to pet him he will be unpleasant. We also have a mutt named Huxley who is extremely friendly, and a bit wild. Huxley will let you pet the hell out of him, he gives hugs too. Both dogs will bark their heads off when you enter the house.
Our location is probably our greatest feature. Our house is centrally located in the Marigny. Frenchmen St. jazz and music clubs are only six blocks away, the French Quarter is a ten minute, nine-block walk away in one direction, and the Bywater (neighborhood) is just over the train tracks, two blocks in the other direction.
We are one block from Mardi Gras Zone, a 24 hour organic grocery store (now with an alcohol license!), and three blocks from Hank's, a 24 hour convenience store (where you can stock up on alcohol and fried chicken). Flora's Coffee shop is two blocks away. There are eight bars (ranging from fancy cocktail bars to dive bars) within a three block radius.
We always encourage our guests to walk everywhere. You'll see more interesting details and meet more friendly people just by walking.
Uber/Lyft are reasonable when there are not big events in town, we recommend United Cab for a taxi ride.
The #88 bus runs down St. Claude to the French Quarter (3 blocks away) or you can catch the #5 bus on N. Peters and Port St.
There are bike rental shops nearby, biking is THE BEST way to get around New Orleans.
Other things to note
Q: Do you have wifi
A: YES! Airbnb should send you our wifi handle and password after you confirm the booking. If not, we've got it written down in the house.
Q: Is there free parking on the street?
A: Yes, parking in the Marigny is free. You can often nab a spot right around the corner, if not right out front.
Q: Is it safe to walk to and from the French Quarter at night?
A: We've never had a problem with it, at 3pm, at 9pm, at 5am, etc. That being said, walking with your DSLR hanging off your shoulder at 1am probably isn't a smart move, but that'd be true in any city. Stay alert, we have had guests get mugged in the French Quarter! A cab/ride share from the French Quarter to our house will run $5-10 depending on the night.

The forces of New Orleans, or just plain ol' coincidence, brought us together in late December 2012.
Matthijs is a letterer/graphic designer from the Netherlands, Katie is an artist from New Jersey. Our household is fluent in English and Dutch.
