1913 Historic Shenandoah Getaway! The nearly condemned 1913 building survived 2 historic fires was purchased in 2012 and has been completely restored.Mountain views. close to national forest, hiking, river, caverns, historic RailRoad, & Massanutten.
We are so excited to be opening up our historic space again this Spring 2015. We hope that all of our guests will enjoy our space and all that Shenandoah has to offer.
Part of the Federal Government Buildings of Historic Record. The Building, nearly Condemned and survived 2 historic town fires sits adjacent to the town hall building. A 2 story building, Circa 1913 sits on the original "Main Street" of the historic Rail Road town. One of the few "changing stations" for the Rail Road sits just across the street. The top story has been Restored to a 1600 square foot 3 bedroom, 2 bath flat with a full living and dining room, kitchen, laundry and pantry room, and family room. The kitchen is centrally located and improved by granite counter tops. The lower floor has plans for 2 commercial spaces in the future. It is a very Unique Experience and the redesign of the top floor flat was specifically done by us to allow for an open floor plan while being able to accommodate our 4 children while we were deciding on our new home. Hardwood floors throughout and the original front brick wall left open to showcase the unique history and original front windows provides a flashback in time to 1913!
The entire Flat and all it's ammenities. A flower shop, Gym, barber shop are literally a block away. This is a one Red light town! A local gas station with a McDonald's attached is pretty much the morning meeting place for locals and is only a short 4 block walk. Although a small town, it offers a couple eateries that are wonderful and have been here for years.
Washington DC is within a 2 hour drive. The drive is a beautiful one, with mountains all around and within view most of the way, not your normal interstate drive, although you can go that way.
The George Washington Forest and Shenandoah National Park are right here and include the Skyline Drive and 100's of Hiking Trails.
The Shenandoah River is a Stone Throw from "The Building" with a local boat launch just down the street. Enjoy fishing, Kayaking, Canoeing, or just sit on a raft and float.
Massanutten four season Resort is 15 minutes away with an Indoor Water Park, Skiing, Golfing, and other activities. Luray, VA is only 20 minutes away and has one of the most beautiful Caverns imaginable. Harrisonburg, Va and James Madison University are about 25-30 minutes and Charlottesville, VA and several Vineyards are about 35-40 minutes away. Of course, we just like spending time in the Historic Town with only 1 red light!.
Interaction with Guests
INTERACTION WITH GUESTS:
We are a busy little family with five children! We are living only a short distance away and do our very best to make sure you have a wonderful stay at this very special place. Our children call it "the building," which is it's unofficial name. We try to respond quickly to (website hidden)s and after booking, via phone and private email.
Having never been to Virginia nor the Shenandoah Valley I picked Matt and Erin's place out of many choices. Both my travelling companion and I were ecstatic with our choice. Matt and Erin went out of their way to accommodate us as we were their first guests. The pictures are exactly what you get. A beautifully renovated building in a very friendly town. We used their place as a home base while we toured the area and were able to relax in front of the big screen tv on our return. All appliances are new and the furniture is top notch. Matt also arranged for us to drive the Skyline Drve for free. We never did meet but that is because we were out exploring the beautiful countryside. I am sure that all who take advantage of their home will be very happy they did. Coming from Canada I was astounded with the beauty of Virginia in general and Shenandoah in particular. The people are very friendly and as a tip the Mexican food restaurant on the road from Elkton is one of the best I have ever been to and I have been to many. John and I wish you the best of luck on your many future rentals and thank you from the bottom of our heart for your outstanding hospitality. I hope to return some day for an even longer stay.
Matt & Erin have put a lot of work into making this place very comfortable and up-to-date. It is a great place for a family, with three bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen, dining room, living room and play area (complete with toys for toddlers/young kids). They were extremely responsive to any questions we had and did their best to make sure we had a great stay. It was a good home base with short drives to many nearby attractions. You are also two blocks from a nice public playground, and also a short walk down to the river.
My husband and I were looking for a quiet and relaxing weekend away and we found exactly that! Matt and Erin's apartment is very updated, comfortable, and had everything that we would need to (email hidden)ey communicated well with us prior to our arrival and were accessible anytime during our stay if we had any questions. We arrived on Friday evening and immediately felt relaxed and kicked off a perfect weekend at Shenandoah. On Saturday we had everything we needed to make a great breakfast at home and to start a great day of exploring. Their unit is located within a charming area, close to a beautiful river and surrounded with nature and also easy access to anything we needed. We had a great time hiking in Shenandoah, which is located only about 30 minutes away. After a full day of trails, coming home to their apartment was a great way to end a full day of exploring. We enjoyed relaxing, cooking a great meal, and watching DVDs on their TV while resting on their cozy couch and lazy boy pullout chair. Their home had all the comforts we needed throughout this special and much needed getaway. Thank you, Erin and Matt, for sharing your apartment with us! :) If you are looking for rest and relaxation, as well as some gorgeous day trips, their place is ideal.
Never judge a book by its cover, open it up and get inside to understand the story. You get exactly what you would want here , a really good, clean, warm and interesting apartment, in a fantastic location, supported by Matt and Erin who will do anything to ensure that you love the place as much as they obviously do. A great few days - thank you.
OUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO:
Camp fires by the river. Watching the trains. Hiking and going to the park just down the street with the kids. Enjoying the small town atmosphere. Skiing at Massanutten.
Behave as if this was your own home. Clean up before you leave. Guests are expected to clean up after themselves. Refrigerator should be completely emptied and floor swept. Linens placed in laundry baskets and all trash placed in garbage container in back with lid shut. We Lived here, it was our home. It is a unique Historic building that has been brought back to life. It was nearly extinct if you will, so treat it with the Historic Respect it deserves and as you would treat your own home.
We liked the house, the space, it was clean and Matt was very supportive in guiding us to the area. The location was very good as it is close to the Shenandoha valley. Shenandoha is a village with limited facilities, therefore visitors need to go prepared.
The house is very cute and clean. Not much to do in the town of Shenandoah, but it is a convenient base for visiting Luray Caverns and the Shenandoah National Park.
We had a wonderful weekend here and definitely want to return again.
This was my first stay as an AirBnB guest, after hosting for several months. Erin's and Matt's place was terrific. It was very clean, extremely spacious, and had a beautiful living/dining/kitchen area that looked out at the train tracks. There are windows all around, two beautiful, clean bathrooms, and a very modern kitchen with lots of counter space. Matt and Erin were also very responsive, as we had a few questions about the area. We would highly recommend staying at their place, and would do it again!
We had a wonderful stay at Matt & Erin's Historic Shenandoah River Getaway. Matt and Erin were very helpful before our stay and let us know the best places to eat, what to do in the area and some local attractions. They responded quickly to any questions before and during the trip. The house was clean, neat and well-kept. The kitchen and bathrooms were modern and spacious. The living room/dining room area was also very open. It is centrally located to many major hiking trails, rafting and shopping. We really enjoyed our stay at the end of June 2014 and we look forward to coming back again!! We would highly recommend this property. Many thanks
Matt and Erin were great to work with and answered our emails and calls quickly. My family lives a short distance away in Elkton and we came to attend a family wedding so this place was ideal for us! We loved the open area of kitchen/dining/family room because we had our grandchildren and their parents so the family TOGETHER made our time in Matt and Erin's AirBnB memorable and fun! Our grandchildren LOVE trains and could look out the windows and watch the cars shifting to different tracks and Poppy (granddad) could explain it all since he worked for N&S Railway for 39+ years. All in all it was a great experience even though our focus was the wedding and the Father's Day picnic on the Shenandoah River.
We all walked down the sidewalk at sunset and the littles were able to run up and down the sidewalk and enjoy some fresh valley air before going to bed....a great small town experience!
What a perfect place in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Our stay at Matt and Erin's gorgeous flat couldn't have been better. Plenty of space for our boys to run around, plus great accommodations for cooking and relaxing.
The views of the mountains from the windows are incredible to wake up to each morning, and it's just a short drive to all the big and small places in the valley.
We were slightly worried you'd be able to see or feel the trains because they're so close, but those century old 12-inch thick brick walls keep the sound out and the inside the right temperature.
Because the town is so small, we felt safe letting our sons play outside in the neighboring fields and backyard. And you can see them from virtually any corner of the flat.
Matt and Erin did the most to make us feel at home, with constant contact, a superbly clean place on arrival, and even supplies to make a spaghetti dinner our first night.
If you're thinking about visiting the valley, definitely put this place high on your list.
Matt & Erin's place was the perfect place for our visit! We were four people (two couples) and the place had more than enough space for us; It can comfortably accommodate three couples and seven people total. The beds are comfortable and the renovated interior looks great. As for the location, the apartment is located on a quant street and overlooks the train tracks. We enjoyed the slower pace of Shenandoah and were fortunate enough to get out for a few hikes in the beautiful surrounding parks. As for the hosts, we couldn't have asked for more helpful and responsive hosts than Matt & Erin — Not only did they communicate perfectly before our arrival, they were responsive with recommendations on restaurants and hikes. We highly recommend others choose Matt & Erin's place as their 'home away from home' while in the area!
Matt and Erin is just how we started, now we have five kids so life has become even more enjoyable. We are a busy family, but enjoy camping, hiking, and just spending time together here in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
