DO NOT STAY HERE...
To start things off on a bad foot, Freddy informed us that he could pick us up from the train station, so I gave him our arrival info, but when we arrived he was nowhere to be found. We thought "No biggie, maybe he didn't get our email in time..." We eventually found our way to the hostel, but when we arrived more problems arose...
As others have stated, yes, the sheets are damp. Also, the room had not been cleaned since the previous guests left. There were hairs on the bed sheets, unidentifiable stains on the sheets, mold all over the shower, used shampoo packet in the shower, and trash in the bathroom. It was so gross I didn't even want to sit down on the bed to rest my feet. Also, there was a large hole in the wall in the shower that led to another room that was so dark I could not see what was in there. It was downright creepy. There are openings above the doors to each room, so even though you could lock your door, if someone really wanted to get into your room it wouldn't be hard. Oh, and the wifi didn't work... anywhere in the hostel. When I informed the man at the front desk that we were not happy with our room and we wanted a refund, all of a sudden he couldn't understand me. We had had no problem communicating up to that point, and I was speaking Spanish and English to him. When I asked for Freddy, all he said was that Freddy would return. We ended up going down to the Hotel Tierra Viva toward the bottom of Aguas Calientes and shelling out $180 for a room, which by the way was a fantastic idea and well worth it. If you're going to Machu Picchu, you will need a good night's rest and spending a little extra cash on accommodations is worth it in the long run.
I would like to mention that airbnb did a stellar job of handling this situation - we were able to cancel the reservation at Pakarina and received a full refund. I greatly appreciated that, and since I had never experienced such a nightmare of a hostel before, was impressed with airbnb's customer service. My only hope is that this listing gets enough complaints that it is barred from airbnb.
Freddy is great. The communication with him prior to our arrival was very easy (email, SMS, AirBnB platform), all worked. His English is good and he is clearly working hard to make his guests feel welcome and comfortable. The hostel is basic and as presented in the description and photos. The people working there are all very kind and helpful. Breakfast was good. Towels and sheets were clean. The bathroom was clean. It was a good experience. It's quite far up the hill from the train station and very close to the entrance of the hot springs. I suppose I might choose a different location if I were to return. Maybe something closer to the station and the plaza, but just because there's more down there. That said, we had a wonderful lunch at MAPI Carnes just on the corner before the hostel. The grilled trout was great.
The place is 5 mins from the hot springs and not far from the station too. A good location. The restaurant on the first floor serve very delicious food. We had 3 meals there. The staffs are friendly and helpful.
Good place: clean hotel and breakfast from 5 am in the morning. Rooms on the road side are noisy.
I had a good experience staying here. The room was very nice and in Machu Picchu, hot water is very important. Freddy's place had a good shower with plenty of hot water. The continental breakfast is simple but effective. When I arrived at the train station, I had to call so that they would come for me. But other than that, I highly recommend this place.
Warning! - This place is not what it seems. Firstly the room that we were given had a broken glass window that didn't lock and it opened to a dark dingy hallway. They offered me another room and the there was a blood stain on the bed!! The whole place was super dirty and looks like its rented by the hour... We chose to walk away and forfeit the payment. Oh ya- there was no internet as promised as well.
We found a great clean and connected places for the same low price right across the street. Overall the town was beautiful and we didn't let this bad experience effect our trip.
Sorry Freddy, you need to work to make your place rentable.
