About this listing

We love to share our family home in the vineyards on the edge of a small village. We've renovated this typical stone farm house and blacksmith shop over the past 40 years adapting it to our children, grand-children and to the pleasure of our guests.

The Space

Our home and garden are on 2 acres of French countryside between Bordeaux and St Emilion on the edge of a small village overlooking vinyards and fields. Family heirlooms, antique french linens on comfortable beds, good books, a piano, all spiced with a collection of contempory art ...welcome our guests.

A former blacksmith shop, now living room, gave the house its name, La Forge, and much loving resauration work to the 18th Century building gave the results that you can enjoy today...a house that feels like home no matter what your nationality.
The main floor bedroom with an ensuite, skylit bath has a terrasse to the west and a private entrance from the courtyard.
Upstairs there are two suites with a bath and double bed. One is a family suite next to a children's room with 4 built in "lit clos" with adult size matresses. The two rooms share a bathroom with a deep antique clawfoot tub.
The other suite has a room with a double bed and a room with a large single bed that share a bathroom with a shower.
La Forge main floor living room, library, entrance hall and dining room all have comfortable places to enjoy music, read and gather to talk. There is always room in the fridge to keep tomorrow's picnic and the wine glasses and dishes may be used for you evening meal if you don't feel like going out for dinner every day.
There are garden tables and lounge chairs for relaxing and watching the birds...
For more exercise our private family pool is open to our guests at the Pey Froment farm annex just down the road 1 mile . It's nice to know that your children may zip up and down the paths of a fenced in field without having to worry about them jumping into the pool with all the usual swimming pool noise while you're enjoying a good book in the garden. This year we've added access to a private beach less than 2 miles from the house...a beautiful turquoise blue lake with water skiing (one low noise inboard boat!) There are also a few bikes that you my borrow or you can rent even better ones in Creon on the nearby 50 mile off the road bike path provides a wonderful way to discover the countryside and villages between Bordeaux and the heart of the Entre Deux Mers wine appelation.

House Rules

La Forge is, of course, a non smoking house...I do have an ash tray for outside smokers.
CHILDREN: As it's our family home it's well adapted to children and babies but it is NOT CHILD PROOF. It is not a "ikea house" and I haven't taken out everything that is fragile. The livingroom is off grounds for little children except with an adult as the baby grand piano is not for (URL HIDDEN) is too tempting for little fingers. The children's room has two bunk beds but the upper birth is for the 10 and over only. I have left several of the gates that I put up for my grandchildren under 3 in strategic places.
ANIMALS: Please ask first. I think that if you're traveling with your dog, they are well behaved and I allow them in the ground floor bedroom if they bring their own bed! I don't allow pets in the upstairs or in the dinner and living rooms. The garden is fully enclosed and is a great place to play with your dog.
There are small wast baskets in all the bathrooms with bio-degradable plastic bags. Once full separate the recycleable (paper, hard plastic, metal and glass) from the rest a put it in the two trash cans in the kitchen. Recyclable on the left and trash on the right. Food garbage can be composted in the garden composter (no protien). The outside trash cans are near the road: YELLOW for the recycleing, BEIGE for the trash and a black bin for the glass. The BEIGE is picked up once a week. Put the bin on the road on Monday evening. The YELLOW, is twice a week. Look at the dates beside the cans in the kitchen and put it on the road on the wednesday evening before the date...they pick up early! Don't forget to bring in the bins once they've been picked up. The glass is only on the 1st monday of each month. Set it out the evening before.
Please use the vacum cleaner when it needs to be cleaned and before you leave. After vacuming rhere is a wet mop in the pantry for the tile floors.
The bathroom cleaners are in each bathroom. The downstairs bathroom tiles and the mable top wash stand in the upstairs shower room should NOT be cleaned with the usual bathroom cleaners as it attacts both the terra cotta and the marble. Only use the "SAVON NOIR" that you'll find in those two bathrooms.

I'm a french american who has been living in France most of my life. I've run a B&B for many years and I organise personalised specialty tours (cooking, wine, gardens, brocant and contempory art)... as well as being an agent for european performing artists who perform for children and family audiences in North America and Asia. My husband, Bruno, is a psychatrist in Bordeaux and a passionat cook and gardener. We both love working on our 14th and 18th century houses, we have a very messy wood shop where we seem to have never ending projects and every year we have new hopes for our gardens that keep us busy. However, we like to take time to enjoy my four children (who are spread out between several countrys) and our grandchildren... as well as our guests who often become good friends !
