Ideally located close to funky Fitzroy and surrounded by verdant gardens, this small, semi-self-contained cottage offers you a warm, peaceful hideaway. Come and go as you please through your own private entrance. Free wireless broadband and a green, leafy outlook make it perfect for either work or holiday accommodation.
This wood and brick cottage stands separately to the main house. It has one cosy bedroom, with a double bed, a chest of drawers and a small sideboard. There's a bar fridge, kettle, toaster, tea pot and coffee press, plus glasses, cups, breakfast plates and cutlery. The compact cottage also has a surprisingly spacious bathroom, with a shower, wash basin and toilet. With its polished wooden floorboards and large windows, the cottage has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.
The cottage is semi-self-contained: that is, it has its own bathroom, plus everything you need to make your own breakfast, even though it's not a complete kitchen. You'll find juice, yoghurt, butter, jam and milk in the fridge, and I provide fruit, home-made muesli, tea and coffee, plus bread and - the secret to a true Breakfast of Champions - Vegemite.
The cottage door has its own lock. There's a path that runs beside the house, leading to a garden door that can also be locked securely. Guests are free to come and go independently.
I live and work in the front house. The kitchen in the front house is not shared, unless by prior arrangement. The laundry facilities (a front-loader washing machine and an efficient heat-pump dryer) are available if needed.
Wi-fi internet access at ASDL2+ speed is available: I'm happy to provide you with my password.
Being self-employed and working at home, I'm in the front house a lot during the day. I'm certainly very happy to answer any questions and help my guests in any way I can. I also understand the value of privacy and independence: I want my guests to have the same level of quiet enjoyment of this lovely part of Melbourne that I do.
Clifton Hill is tucked into a quiet corner between leafy parks, in the inner north of Melbourne. It's close to all the action - the bars, clubs, restaurants and pubs that this part of Melbourne is famous for - but separate enough to ensure a peaceful night's sleep. Nearby, Smith Street, Brunswick Street, Queen's Parade and High Street offer an unsurpassed array of dining options, all within a 15 minute walk or a comfortable tram ride.
Clifton Hill is one of the most well-serviced suburbs in terms of public transport. The train station (10 mins walk) is on two busy train lines. The number 86 tram (5 mins walk) is regular and reliable. Buses offer cross-town connections.
This is an old part of town, and our street in particular is quite narrow. Parking is not always easy. However, a parking space is never more than a few minute's walk away.
Thanks to our location close to the Eastern Freeway, getting to the eastern suburbs is extremely fast. The news Eastlink Freeway means that the Mornington Peninsula is less than one hour away.
From the airport, it's a 35 minute drive along the Tullamarine Freeway, then along Brunswick Road and through North Fitzroy. A taxi ride should cost around $50 in one of Melbourne's famously terrible taxis. Alternatively, the clean and reliable SkyBus takes you from the airport to Southern Cross train station, where you can take either the South Morang or Hurstbridge line to Clifton Hill station. From there, it's a 10-minute walk through Darling Gardens and past the Clifton Hill primary school to the cottage.
The whippets, Rabbit and Sunday, are brother and sister. They're around four years old. Like most whippets, they are immensely lazy, mostly very quiet and beautifully gentle. They are curious about visitors, but certainly don't impose themselves. Nonetheless, if you dislike dogs, this is not the right place for you.
This cottage was perfect, it was in a great location, close to trams and not much of a walk to Fitzroy or Collingwood. The room is comfortable, clean and private. Rachel was great, very responsive and accommodating to requests. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks again!
Rachel's little cottage was a great place to stay while in Melbourne. We loved the location and found it really easy to get around from there. We had great communication with Rachel before our trip and she met us on arrival. We enjoyed our short chat and her recommendations on a few things. Thanks very much for the breakfast treats as well, Rachel. We'd definitely come back and stay here again.
Rachel is one of those rare people that you just adore immediately. The cottage is exactly as described, bigger than it looked in the photos, and beautifully appointed. Rachel is delightful, attentive, and extremely thoughtful. It was a wonderful stay and am already looking forward to the next time.
I have not used airbnb before and was a little apprehensive but need not have been. Rachel welcomed me and the cottage is just charming, clean and fresh with a lovely homely feeling.
There was a fabulous supply of breakfast foods and abundant teas and coffee. The cottage being separate from the house is perfect for privacy while not feeling lonely for a single traveller.
Rachael is a great host and looks after all your needs with the help of her two gorgeous whippets, Rabbit and Sunday.
I highly recommend Rachael's cottage for a perfect place to stay. Deborah
I had the most amazing stay in Rachel's cottage. It is even better than it appears in the photographs, and I was sorry that I wasn't staying longer. The bed was amazingly comfortable and the shower had fantastic heat and water pressure.
I wasn't expecting it, but Rachel even provided organic milk, yoghurt, tea, coffee, fresh fruit, muesli, bread... Beautiful!
I only saw Rachel on the first day, and got to meet the whippets (adorable). But she checked in with me to make sure that I had everything I needed, and made me feel very welcome. I would definitely love to stay in Rachel's cottage again when I visit Melbourne.
What a charming, sensitive and urbane host. And what a comfortable, bijou and well situated haven. I loved staying in Rachel's garden cottage. It gave me just the right amount of care, comfort, solitude and company that I needed as I moved to Melbourne and looked for a more permanent place to stay. The neighbourhood is quaint and honest, and the proximity to Smith Street and Brunswick Street means that you are always near interesting eateries and a colourful array of shops. Trams are local so you can get to other parts of Melbourne as well. Perfect.
Rachel's cottage was a little oasis a stone's throw from the Fitzroy action. We stayed for two nights and were really impressed by the location, the cleanliness/facilities of the cottage itself, and Rachel's little touches (like the fully stocked fridge).
Definitely a place we'll keep in mind when we're next in town.
Rachel's place was a delight. The rooms are exactly like the pictures, if not even nicer - clean, airy, lovely decoration. Perfect for a one-person stay. The breakfast foods were wonderful - home-made muesli, organic milk, yoghurt, and fruit, and plenty of teas and coffee. I was keeping late hours, so it was GREAT to have a nice breakfast at my fingertips. The bathroom was just perfect, and the shower head was a real pleasure after a long day of dance workshops!
I didn't meet Rachel, and I only glimpsed the whippets, which is, tbh, my preference: I like a nice, quiet stay. Despite this, Rachel's response to my questions about keys and checking in and out were prompt and helpful, and the process was easy.
The place is very close to public transport (I took the skybus to the CBD, then a tram to Clifton Hill), yet still quiet and leafy. Clifton Hill is a great location for visitors - lots of good shopping and eating, close to the CBD, but still quiet.
If there are two of you, be prepared for a tiny room. But for one person, it was just fine.
I'll definitely be putting Rachel's place on my list of 'must have' accommodation for my Melbourne trips.
This is a lovely little retreat. It's reasonably close to the city and yet very quiet and peaceful. The tram to town was very convenient with great neighborhoods nearby. The local shops had everything you might want and a selection of restaurants as well.
Breakfast food provided was delicious and more than adequate.
Rachel was happy to help with any queries.
The only negative would be that this may be a squeeze for two, while very comfortable for one person.
I recently stayed in Rachel's cottage for a trip to visit family and friends, and thought it was brilliant. This was my first Airbnb experience so I was a little apprehensive, but any concerns I may have had were allayed immediately upon meeting Rachel and entering the cottage. The cottage itself is very clean and finished to a high quality; the bed is firm and comfy, as you would hope, but it is personal touches that make it special: you are greeted with a packet of tim-tams, fresh bread and milk, organic tea and coffee, a quiet bar fridge (that is important to me!), and some lovely flowers picked from the beautiful garden (I think!). On a personal level, I had a great rapport with Rachel and her flatmate Ruth. They are both easy-going, friendly, interesting people without being obtrusive and it felt really easy to settle in and enjoy my stay. Thank you ladies - I had a ball.
