RACING SILKS CARRIAGE HOUSE was built in 1886, and is located on the grounds of Crystal Springs, a grand Victorian
mansion near the University of Louisville, and about 2 miles north of Churchill Downs, and 2 miles south of downtown
It is a beautiful 2 story brick building, with 2 car garage downstairs, and 3 bedrooms, 1 1/2 baths upstairs. It has many period features, including high ceilings, heart pine floors, an exposed brick wall in the kitchen, and original "hay doors" in one bedroom. It is decorated with Kentucky Derby and horse racing memorabilia, some antiques, and other furnishings appropriate for a Victorian home.
The foyer and baths have marble floors, and high quality Kohler fixtures. The kitchen has a gas stove, microwave, dishwasher, and refrigerator, and the dining area has an antique cherry gateleg table that will seat 8. There is a laundry room with washer/dryer, and it has central air and heat.
The bedrooms all have new Tempur-pedic mattresses, with
a queen sized mattress in one bedroom, and doubles in the
other two. One bedroom has an antique brass bed, and
another has an antique cherry bed.
It has AT&T U-verse high speed internet service, and digital
cable TV with over 400 channnels, including sports package,
and a new Sony flat screened TV. There are several I-Pod
and computer work stations.

We love love loved staying here for the weekend. The carriage house is located in a very cool, historic part of Louisville on a very pleasant street. The realty company was very accommodating to our group's late late arrival time and we never had a problem accessing the place or the owners. Even when arriving past midnight, we were greeted by wine and treats, a welcome sight for weary travelers.
The decor of the house was fantastic. There must have been a dozen or so pieces of Derby memorabilia in each of the bedrooms, the kitchen, and the living area. Between that, the rocking chairs, corners chairs, etc. the house had a very cozy feel to it. All of the facilities were great, from the oven in the kitchen to the shower.
Overall, the real value in this property comes from location. Even taking a stroll down the alley to check out the cool carriage houses was a lot of fun. Add in the proximity to a couple of good corner pizza spots, coffee, and more this place was great. It is also a very drive-able or cab-able distance to the Highlands or NuLu.
To continue about the surrounding community.... The community itself is very sleepy. Over the weekend the only crowds we saw were a few blocks away outside of a pizza shop. It seems like the community is a nice mix of young renters and older home-owners. We never once felt uncomfortable strolling around, finding parking, etc.
I would highly recommend this place to anybody going to the Derby, checking out the Bourbon trail (like our group did), or simply spending a couple of nights in the city. Our group had four and it worked out quite well. You could probably squeeze in one or two more people, though the shower situation may get a little tricky seeing as there is only one shower and two toilets. This being one of the few drawbacks, I would definitely stay here again if given the option.
This is a lovely apartment and provides a pleasant, convenient and comfortable base. The beds are especially comfortable and easily outclassed the several hotel beds we used on the same trip. I didn't get to meet the person who manages the property locally as I missed my flight connection and arrived very late but she was very concerned to make sure that we were happy with everything and kept in close touch by email giving us useful advice about local amenities. It feels like a home from home unlike some apartments which can be a bit like a hotel suite. Good value for money.
The carriage house stay worked well for us. There were 4 of us in town to work in Louisville and although we did not get to see much of the area due to our schedule, the carriage house was very accommodating. There was wine and cheese for us when we arrived and it was great having all of the iPod / iphone ports. I do want to mention that the carriage house's address while on S. 1st street, the parking area is located on a street behind the house. Pretty easy to find. All in all, a great location in Louisville. Thanks John!
We were a group of 8 that stayed in two adjoining properties owned by John Thompson. The places (Racing Silks and Apartment #4) are fantastic, and in a vibrant and convenient neighborhood. While we didn't get the pleasure of meeting John in person, he was very accommodating through email and worked with us to tailor the rental to meet our needs. The local agent in charge of getting us the keys was super communicative and helpful. Between the two of them there were several thoughtful, small touches to the apartment (wine bottle and glasses on the table, local menus, area guides, etc).
I couldn't have been happier with the experience here, and will not hesitate to rent from John again the next time I'm in Louisville.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Racing Silks. The carriage house is spacious, comfortable and has a charming character. The beds and linens were excellent and there was an ample supply of luxurious towels. The bottle of wine and bakery items provided a warm welcome. We were a family of grandparents, parents and a baby and the way the house is laid out provided privacy for each family unit. It was perfect for an infant or small child as there was ample room for cribs, highchairs, etc. and the washer and dryer on site was also a big help. Due to the privacy of the carriage house we didn't need to worry about a crying baby disturbing others. The house is just a few minutes walk from a beautiful, grand victorian neighborhood as well as other quaint neighborhoods that are interesting to explore. A supermarket, deli and restaurants are within a few minutes drive and also restaurants and local produce mart within walking distance.
Another great AirBNB stay! John and Sharon were great to work with, and very responsive. The area of Old Louisville is great. The property was really neat and the people that live in the main house are very friendly. A big bonus for us was the Tempurpedic beds. They are very comfy! Having a washer and dryer always a plus when traveling with a kid. It was very spacious and the wifi worked great. I definitely give a thumbs up to this property. Now we have 2 great AirBNB choices to stay at when visiting family in Louisville. The other place we had stayed at before was booked on the days we needed so I am very glad we found this property. SOOOOO much better than a hotel!
