Between 1948-1950, 2,498 Lustron homes were built in the US to meet the needs of returning GIs. Today about 1,500 remain, many on historical registers and achieving popularity after being featured in the popular TV series Fallout. Each Lustron arrived flat packed with an erection manual. The homes incorporated modern architectural elements with efficient use of space and featured built-in furniture, cabinets and space-saving storage solutions. The entire home, inside and out, is enameled steel.

The space
This Lustron is located in a quaint and quiet neighborhood on the NE side of Cedar Rapids. The interior has been lovingly restored with the support and guidance of many in the Lustron Community across the country. As we continue to restore the exterior you have an opportunity to experience the Lustron lifestyle, as featured in the series Fallout. So take a trip back in time and enjoy your stay in this little slice of history!

- The living room offers unique seating and a 55” smart TV for a relaxing evening in. A collection of books highlighting the history of the Lustron home will make for interesting reading in your spare time.

- The original kitchen and dining room structures are still intact and have been complemented with new appliances, including dishwasher and microwave. A fully stocked coffee and tea bar, basic cooking equipment and table settings are also provided.

- The utility room off the kitchen houses any housekeeping supplies you may need during your stay, as well as a washer and dryer.

- You’ll find two unique bedrooms to the rear of the home featuring deluxe memory foam mattresses, cooling bamboo mattress pads and luxury 100% cotton sheets. Each room has a spacious closet equipped with wooden hangers and cubbies. Power strips with charging stations are located beside each bed.

- The bathroom has been fully renovated and outfitted with luxury towels and washcloths, a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and makeup remover towelettes. An original drawer unit has been restored and will provide plenty of storage space for your belongings.

- Out back you will find a mini oasis on the screened porch outfitted with vintage metal patio furniture and modern updated cushions.

- Ample parking for driveway, with additional safe street parking is available on the street.

- Large fenced in backyard including screened in porch with outdoor furniture and dining set perfect for relaxing outdoors.

You will have access to the entire home and yard.

Other things to note
The interior has been completely renovated. Many of the parts have been sourced from across the country. We are now restoring the exterior, with plans to add a fire pit, landscaping, add awnings restore the gutters and paint. We’ll update as we make progress.

It is our aim that you have the finest possible guest experience. To that end we have a timestamped video taken after each cleaning. This video is reviewed to ensure that the property is cleaned to our standard and that all furnishings and amenities are in place for your stay.

Stays longer than 28 days will require a signed rental agreement.
