The Space

Welcome to Bristol, and this home away from home in the lively and central neighbourhood of Totterdown, which is only a short walk from the main train station. Here you'll find your own room with nearby bathroom, speedy internet access, and free parking right next to the house.

The house:
You will be staying in an individual, architect designed two floor detached house, on a very quiet, peaceful lane with only two other houses as your neighbours. So this place is perfect for those who want a good night's sleep, while also being very close to the vibrant city centre, in an area with panoramic views of Bristol.

Presented in the style of a charming period mews cottage, the house is a stone fronted, one-off design that reflects the architecture of the original Edwardian houses in the vicinity. Despite appearances the house was only recently built, decorated and furnished, so everything inside is shiny, new and uber-stylish. Indoors the house is flooded with light, thanks to the many skylights that combine with the oak floors and doors, marble tiles and a touch of gothic decor, to make the whole place feel bright and contemporary.

The bedroom:
Your bedroom is at the front of the house, and you can almost, but sadly not quite, see the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge from your window (you can see it from the end of the lane though!). The room has a matching pine double bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and bed side table. The bed is a queen sized double (a couple of inches difference in width compared to a standard double).

Clean and comfy bedding, fluffy towels and toiletries are of course provided, along with some useful information about Bristol, plus tea and coffee making facilities and drinking water. In addition, a desk and chair can be placed in the room upon request. You will also find a good quality mattress, ambient lighting and unusual artworks will make for a relaxing space.

The bathroom:
Fitted with a lovely steel Bette bath, you will be tempted to relax in it for hours. Unless you're more of a shower person, in which case you can enjoy the power of the shower! Fully tiled walls and floor, double mirrors and a heated towel rail makes this bathroom a joy to get ready in. This bathroom may not be en suite, but it is next to your bedroom, full size and brand new. Shower gel, hand wash and shampoo are provided along with plenty of hand and bathing towels and toilet rolls.

The Neighborhood

The house is located opposite a public hall which offers yoga and zumba every Saturday, and everyone and anyone can go along. Round the corner is a gym which is fully equipped, and open to all. Within a five minute walk there's a supermarket that's open until 10pm every day, and there's also a few independent grocery shops just as close.

Stroll along further to find a lovely range of cafes and restaurants, all no more than a ten minute walk away. Whether you're after a fry-up, fish and chips, or traditional Italian or Moroccan - it's all here!

Victoria park (email hidden) open space that's always open, and it's great for joggers and dog walkers, and it takes five minutes to get there on foot.

Totterdown also has a great range of local pubs, with live music and a really friendly atmosphere. Bristol is known for it's eclectic nightlife, and either a short cab or bus ride or a twenty minute stroll along the river will get you right into the centre of it all. The same goes for exploring the centre of Bristol during the day, which may include the many independent shops and markets, the imaginative street art, historical buildings or the many cultural pursuits on offer.

Getting around

There's space directly in front of the house to park your car (for free) if you have one, and if not then you'll find the bus and train stops are almost as close. Bristol's main train station, Temple Meads, is where the national trains arrive and this is only a ten minute walk away. Local bus routes are only a five minute walk away, while the main bus station is also reachable on foot.

There's a main road a couple of minute's walk away, where you can easily flag a taxi should you wish to do so... Though with the city centre a mere fifteen minute walk away, you may prefer to explore Bristol on foot.

Other Things to Note

If there's anything I haven't covered - ask me! I'm always happy to oblige and I welcome any questions or requests.

  • Chloe was very helpful both before and during our stay and was quick to respond. We never actually met her but she was easily contactable.

The location is ideal to get to temple meads and in fact by car anywhere in the city. Shops were close by and it was a quiet neighbourhood.

The mini fridge and brita filter jug and coffee was a great touch.

  • Totterdown was the 5th airbnb stay for us in a month and a half. We learned a great deal from this experience.

First, I"d like to say that Chloe is a caring, detail oriented and most responsive host. Also, the home is beautifully refurbished and indeed on a quiet street.

Secondly, I share the "cons" of this experience for those travellers who may have similar requirements to my own. This is a house with 3 or 4 guest rooms that share 1.5 bathrooms. As I read and re-read the listing, that point had not been clear to me. I would not choose to luxuriate in a beautiful tub knowing others might be in need of a quick shower to get on their way. The rooms have no TV - which keeps the noise down but was somehow a surprise. The room doors have no locks. There is a substantial small safe in the room for valuables. However, no privacy lock made it less restful for me because I knew it was possible for another guest to wander in, even if unintentionally. Our room rate was $87 per night rather than $52. We could not quite understand the reason for the cost difference as no breakfast is provided. Finally, we were travelling by train and although the walk is not far, it is mostly up hill and over a busy bridge. Would recommend to those arriving to consider a quick taxi ride upon arrival if even only to spoil yourself.

    Response from Chloe:

Thanks for the feedback. There are three guest rooms in the house, as clearly listed on the site, and one of them has an en suite. Consequently, two guest rooms share two bathrooms (when both rooms are booked, often only one is booked out at a time). I did arrange for a cleaner to clean the bathrooms daily throughout this stay.
Furthermore, this listing does not mention a TV or a lock on the door or breakfast or indeed a private bathroom, so I'm not sure why these were expected. Also, most hosts are not solitary people and they do have visitors in their homes - be they guests, other airbnb guests, friends or family - the sharing community is built on trust and I make no impression at any stage that the house is for the exclusive use of any one party.
The price was explained in full prior to the booking being requested, and there are of course no additional charges on top of what was paid directly to airbnb, so I am unsure why the price is subsequently being quibbled.
Bristol is a hilly city (hence the famous Suspension Bridge!) but most guests find the walk from Temple Meads an easy one, as it's most likely the closest property available on airbnb in terms of proximity to the train station.
I am saddened to read this review as I went to great lengths to address every single issue raised directly already, and with my apology and explanation being fully accepted at the same. So it is a shame to now read about these same issues being raised again.
I can only hope that questions about prices and facilities are raised and answered before booking into any further stays via airbnb, to avoid any potential misunderstandings in future.

  • Staying at Chloe's place was a very nice experience. Close to her small house you have a beautiful view over Bristol. It's a 20 Minutes walk to the city center. Unfortunately we missed each other so that we haven't met in person. But she sent several emails during our stay to make sure that everything is going well and we have a good time in Bristol. I can highly recommend staying at Chloe's place! Thank you.

  • Chloe was the perfect host: flexible and fast in answering and supporting us. Fortunately we could bring our luggage before the official check in time, perfect for us. The double room was very clean and tidy, the bed very comfy and the surrounding surprisingly quiet even as the house itself is a bit clairaudient.

  • Perfect place with a perfect location for a visit to a local festival. Nice, bright, clean room and bathroom. Lots of clear communication about the house and the local neighbourhod (very useful).

Thanks Chloe for providing such nice facilities. Will recommend and if I am ever in the neighbourhood I will certainly want to stay here again.

  • Chloe's house is an oasis of calm in a quiet road off a main bus route into the centre of Bristol. Chloe's communication before I arrived was excellent with lots of accurate detail about the house and surrounding area. The room was clean, comfortable with a safe box and fridge, something you don't normally find in AirBnB properties. Across the road is a late night supermarket and the best, coolest eatery in Bristol - The Banco Lounge. It may be some way out of the centre of town but easy to get to and a good prices. Thanks for being a great host Chloe who looks after her customers well.

Freelance Journalist
Hi - I'm Chloe, a freelance journalist who splits my time between Bristol and London. I've spent many years living in both wonderful cities, so I am happy to offer my insider tips on both. I edit a quarterly travel magazine and I simply love travelling, and the thing that excites me the most about airbnb is the opportunity to meet fellow travellers. In London I ran airbnb for a friend's apartment while he was away for a few months, and I really enjoyed striking up new friendships and learning about the travel experiences that people had to share, and so it was the next natural step to become a host myself. I am also TEFL qualified (teaching English as a foreign language) so, foreign language students are particularly welcome to visit, and may even learn the odd grammar tip! I speak very basic French and Greek, and I must say that France and Greece are two of my favourite and most frequented holiday destinations, and when I have the time to do so, I look forward to exploring the airbnb offerings in these countries. On the weekends, I love to spend my time soaking up the arts, be it theatre, exhibitions or live music.
