HIDDEN in the Redwoods of the Northern California Coast, just 6 miles from the Village of Mendocino, Big River Farm is a tranquil getaway just minutes from the Pacific Ocean, endless adventure, fine dining, and much more.

The space

Big River Farm was once a Zen commune in the 60's. We have retained much of the flavor of that time. There are 4 dwellings on the property, strategically situated to have privacy from each other, but sharing the driveway, orchard & garden. The Zendo is a REDWOOD HOUSE nestled amongst the ferns and cherry trees, and can sleep 4 between its cozy BEDROOM w/ queensize bed and LIVING ROOM w/ queensize pullout sleeper couch. There is a separate "bonus room" in the TOWER for yoga or quiet time. This room is not heated or insulated, so the wintertime is a bit challenging, In the summer it is a lovely retreat. We added satellite wifi to the Zendo, so guests can check their email & surf the web. We have limited data, however, and streaming video or audio is restricted.
LARGE KITCHEN is well-equipped for cooking and entertaining. A couple or individual could enjoy the spacious single bedroom house, or up to 4 guests can comfortably share an incredibly AFFORDABLE vacation house.

Guest access

SURROUNDED by Big River State Forest land, Big River Farm is only 1 mile by hiking trails from the Big River, and hosts many enormous ANCIENT REDWOOD TREES.
Make sure to come in the summertime and fall too, when the BERRY BUSHES and ORCHARDS are bursting with ripe goodies!

Interaction with guests

I have an art studio & cabin on the property, so I come and go as the creative urges (and garden watering) dictate. If you need help settling in, please let me know and I will arrange to greet you. I encourage people unfamiliar with woodstoves to let me know and I will give you a basic introduction. Please help yourselves to the herbs to the right of the garden gate & any fruit on the trees when they are in season.

Other things to note

We now have limited data internet so please enjoy but try to limit your data usage! There is a house phone for those whose cell phones don't work well (AT&T, TMobile, Sprint). Verizon & USCellular work fine.

The Zendo was beautiful. Very peaceful and quiet, which is exactly what we were looking for. It's nestled in the redwoods which adds to the quiet solitude. Easy to get to town (Mendocino). Bed was cozy. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to stay.

We fell in love with the Zendo the moment we pulled through the gate into Big River Farm. What struck us first was how absolutely quiet and serene the property is. The many windows, looking out into the trees, are just magical. The kitchen is huge and very well-appointed. I got better sleep in the incredibly comfortable bed than I have in years! It was just such a serene, relaxing experience - we really didn't want to leave. I can't imagine staying anywhere else when we return to Mendocino - we've stayed in quite a number of hotels, cottages and B&Bs on our California road trips, and nothing else compares.

This place is awesome! There's good reason for all the great reviews. The Zendo has plenty of room, and is very well equipped with anything you might need for your stay. It's very quiet and very beautiful, with plenty of windows looking out at gorgeous forest. We did not mind the 15 minute drive into town, especially since it's so scenic. We can't wait for an opportunity to return for a longer stay. Thanks Debbie!!

We experienced the happiness of having chosen the right place to stay as soon as we walked into the Zendo. The pictures do not do it justice. Wonderful windows everywhere with beautiful, peaceful views of redwoods in every direction, open feel yet (EMAIL HIDDEN)fortable bed, user-friendly kitchen, nice bathroom. Though there are other buildings on the property the house & surrounding area feels private. We absolutely loved the magical and quirky feel of this house, and our only regret was staying only 3 days. I don't think 3 weeks (or even 3 years) would be enough! Thank you! We'll be back.

Quiet and comfortable under the beautiful redwoods. Truly one of my favorite rentals and I hope to return a third time

I am an architect & artist :) I have owned Big River Farm since 1984, guiding upgrades and renovations to the beautiful redwood cabins there. I gardened, raised my children, juiced apples, made cherry pies and now create art in my newly renovated studio, the Butsu. I am bringing back the Zen feeling that the original builders created by encouraging a peaceful and appreciative environment to flourish among those who come to spend some time there. My partner Aaron keeps the firewood stocked and we stay mostly on the property in another cabin down the hill from the Zendo. We are now surrounded on 3 sides by Big River State Park so the redwood trees will always be with us, whispering in the wind.
